Giving life to a German Ochsenkopf Iltis axe from the late 50's. A new handle, some filing and the axe is ready for work again

Well done. It is also nice to see that not everyone insists on giving an axehead a mirror polish.

Thanks, no mirror polishes for me :-) after using that a few times it's ugly. So the original patina looks much more appealing to me.

The burning and the oil made for a very good looking axe handle, the work to the head was spot on. Nice to see a moment for the dog.

I have almost the same old Iltis and when I found it I was really astonished because of its slender bit and thought it would make a great Allround woods axe but it to narrow for that. It’s really a specialist tool in my experience

Indeed, i use it only for limbing, but not splitting. My favorite is the other on I restored, a Hults Bruk. A perfect allrounder.

I hope the heat treatment has not been ruined by the angle grinder.

Doesn't look like it, i had to file away a lot of material anyway cauae of the dents. I'm still using this axe without issues.

@@dabberty Good. Hey can you check if the steel is magnetic? I'm looking at an iltis new from germany and it's listed as stainless steel so I'm very curious.

@@iCanHazTwentyLetters just checked, a magnet will stick to the axe

If you like more information about axe design, i can highly recommend "die konstruktionsgrundlagen der axt" from Gottfried Reissinger, the inventor of the Iltis. :) Search it on Z-library on the internet.

Hi Dabberty, thanks for sharing this video of renovating this old Ochsenkopf Iltis axe head. Good work! I've found an old and very very rusty Ochsenkopf Iltis on a flea market but it seems the same one as you have. Would you like to send me a picture on both sides of the stamping of the axe head please. The side with the number on my one is really too rusty to decipher. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Karsten

Thank you, I will send it tomorrow morning, plus some pics of other Iltis axes :-)

Dank je Bert! Even wachten op een storm en dan zoeken naar een omgewaaide boom om het eens goed uit te proberen :-)

As cool as he's Rhineland pattern axes are the handles are kind of terrible don't get me wrong I like the pattern in all but I wouldn't really use it for heavy work because you can drive a 747 through the eye now on the smaller hatchets say up to a pound there okay but everything else is just run out straight out the eye.
