I’m quite late to this but it just shows how much more interesting it would be for Ruka to end up becoming Kazuya’s love interest instead. For once the MC and FMC don’t end up together. I haven’t actually watched rent a girlfriend but from what I’ve seen in this video, I think a better plot would be a combination of coggsie’s 3rd direction (where Kazuya realises the differences he has with the guy who likes Chizuru and goes on a self improvement journey to better and mature himself) followed by his second direction during his self improvement journey (where he apologises to Ruka for how badly he treated her and realises how foolish his one sided affection for Chizuru was, moving on from Chizuru and officially getting together with Ruka (again, much more interesting than having the MC and FMC be together again)) Edit: I did watch some scenes of Ruka and… yeah she could definitely benefit from some character development as well

Honestly at this point the only way to save this sinking ship is for the author to go to therapy, straight up change genre and make it a slice of life about the protagonist actually becoming a better person, forgetting Chizuru and starting to find joy in other stuff. This way I could forgive the author. As he totally ruined Ruka, just introduce a girl, like some kind of manic pixie dream type of stuff, Kazuya confesses pathetically once again, she refuses but appreciates, tells she just wants Kazuya to be her friend, and for once Kazuya actually appreciates his existence as someone's friend as the chick's super charismatic and stuff and is cool just to hang out as a friend. So at that point he starts to date people in a healthy way, sometimes it goes well, sometimes it goes bad, most importantly he builds up confidence and self awareness and finally understands how much of an ass he was with Ruka and you can end the entire work with him asking her for forgiveness and his willing of being her friend, Ruka refuses as too much time passed and she suffered too much, now she actually got a caring, loving boyfriend and understands how bad Kazuya was, but is still happy that Kazuya understood his mistakes, they consensually decide to not see each other anymore, but in a good way, they smile at each other in front of a sunset, super sweet, but also mature ending, you got it. At the same time, you get the Chizuru final arc in which it exclusively talks about her going through life, and not as an idealized entity by Kazuya, as she's a good character that at this point has been so characterized can totally work alone outside the ill intended premise, just straight up make it like Asano's Solanin for Christ sake, free her, end her sufferings. And that's how you end and save the manga. Admitting your mistakes. Going through. Growing up. Even going full meta and becoming the confessions of the author breakin' the fourth wall with an insight on toxic escapism. Either way, the story needs to progress. Needs to get so much better. Honestly it feels like the author's gonna die with this manga. That's why the prospect of it making it fully autobiographical could actually make it interesting, could make it matter. But that's just a crazy idea honestly.

I remembered when I got to the movie arc, I won't deny it's the series best arc by far, which isn't saying much, but I remembered when they got to Chizuru's Grandma and her passing, I ALSO didn't feel anything about it. I remembered my reaction when those episodes came on, I remembered when I was watching Kazuya and Chizuru take Sayuri to the venue, I jokingly said "What if Sayuri just died right there," and then immediately laugh out loud, "I WAS JOKING ABOUT THAT," cause out of all of the predictable things the series went for, despite me already understanding how much of a nothing burger this series is, I was thinking that surely they mangaka wouldn't pick the most predictable plot line you could set yourself up for. I remembered when I started the series when it first aired, I was having a hard time considering who was best between Chizuru and Sumi, now it's Sumi, with Yaemori behind her, and Chizuru is now 3rd for me. I still like Chizuru as a character a lot, but I can't really justify her being that great of a character because she's also the main problem of why the series is super flawed. Another take that I also have is between me personally liking Mami more as a character over Ruka. Like these two are both my least favorites, but my opinion towards both of them changed as the series went on where my opinion on Mami improved cause she was actually doing something, meanwhile my opinion on Ruka just got worse the longer she fawned over a guy that clearly has zero interest in her. Like I can't even take her reasoning to why she likes Kazuya seriously cause it's just like, if that heart rate monitor spiked up when she interacted with Kazuya, what are the odd that it'll happen with another guy that she might also happen to meet and will more likely pay more attention to her than Kazuya. Like Ruka really just feels like a nuisance to the story because she's essentially just fodder. Heck I know that I said that my favorites were Sumi and Yaemori, but at least with Sumi, she's not really involved too much with the story, so I don't need to worry about the story making Sumi be one of the story's problems, and Yaemori was a great addition to also help the story progress which RaG desperately needed, even if her efforts gets reprimanded by the others .

One thing I noticed about how this could be improved is there are other stories that have done this before. One example is a webcomic I read Scott Pilgrim vs the world. There are some differences but the characters themselves are more or less nearly the same. I’m not gonna spoil because I would recommend reading it for yourself but in my opinion it is a good example of a story like this done right. It isn’t a perfect example but it could be a start off point to build a story like this.

As a comparison, What’s so great about Dress Up Darling (at least based on the anime) is that the focus is the main pair, Gojo and Marin. Both are rich characters with clearly defined wants, needs and goals. Barely any other love interests come in to disrupt their chemistry, and the chemistry that does exist is electric and steamy (love hotel scene, anyone?). They are clearly endgame, and we are along for the ride for as long as it takes.

I'm glad I dropped the manga. When that pool arc happens and the secret was out there I was like "This is it!" Because the manga would always go from 0 on its way to 10 and always barely reach and go back to 0. Not some build up that has consequences or something like it goes from 0 on its way to 10 and then it resets a little going back to 2. No just straight 0. Characters like you said don't change and it's the same stuff just a different "plot" like I was getting annoyed reading of a character that is such a wimp going after a girl he likes when you literally have a girl equally as good as the girl you're chasing after and just ignore she exist. The main problem with Rent a Girlfriend is the protag Kazuya 💀 I mean this dork basically spent all the money his parents gave him for his tuition fees (like imagine if your lends you like 200k or more for your whole university studies…), on a rented b*tch online 💀💀💀. YES 200.000 $ !!!! (It was even more than that) That’s the actual amount he spent throughout the first 160 chapters of the manga (so basically the whole 3 seasons). So, they started to kiss each other and shi… she tells him that she loves him very much, he is the love of her life, blah blah blah, she said that she’s willing to have a real relationship with him but he just gotta give her a real chance (not like the pseudo trial which Kazuya didn’t take seriously), etc. After that this dumbahh of Kazuya who is supposed to only "love" Chizuru was blushing all time with a boner (which is one of the main reason why Ruka is holding on him… He gives her falls hope and still want her to stick with him just in case it doesn’t work with Chizuru 💀 Trully a piece of shit). So the time goes by and they were looking at each other on the bed and things were about to get serious 😏 if u know what I mean… BUT you know what this goofy ahh niqqa did ?!💀🤦🏽‍♂️ He was running away like b*tch !!! I think there are chiefly two types of hate that Kazuya gets. Firstly, from men (most likely young boys), who are upset with him because he's not manly enough or whatever and he doesn't fit their idea of a self-insert that would allow them to experience their power fantasy, which seems to be the only reason a lot of people watch anime in the first place. Secondly, from people who are upset with the stalking incident and every other thing they find perverse or disgusting about him, and often lump all those things together, even though there is a massive difference between, say, his sexual fantasies and his bad acts, like the stalking thing. But Kazuya and RaG have been associated with incels and misogyny, which is less about RaG and more about other things, in my opinion. This line of criticism is also often very performative, people feel the need to condemn anything that's bad without trying to understand the character or the context, without empathy or finding joy in fiction that deals in flawed and complex character but doesn't say that such characters are irredeemable. Kazuya isn't the only character who does shitty things in the story, but he's the easiest target for hate, because he's the protagonist, and because he's male, which arguably makes the shitty things he does, like the stalking, more offensive because of the power imbalance and how it's a real thing that a lot of women have to deal with. Not that men can't also be victims. But like it's been said, while the show treats the stalking as a mistake, it doesn't treat it with the creepy realism of, say, a certain sexual situation in Chainsaw Man. It's also the fact that RaG is so popular, with a title and concept that's offensive to many, that makes it more of a target than a lot of other shonen romances that have similar things in them.

I've seen this girl and loser on Instagram like a few years ago when drawing anime or manga was popular. And I just finished rewatching one anime: many people say it's empty, and its romance progress is non-existent and like everything is predictable in it... I'm speaking of Citrus. Yes, yuri anime but gentlemen, please, bear with me for a sec. The reason why I'm mentioning it is because this anime is a great example, in my opinion, of a romance story put in only 12 episodes. And the dynamic is always there, I never had a thought that one of its episodes was extra. No. Each episode contained some plot twist or a sudden change in relationships (between 2 characters). And it really left me wishing it had gotten a 2nd season. I was obsessed at one point with this idea. But then I grew up and started to appreciate its main theme: be frank with the person you love. If you have feelings towards her/him, then just tell it straight to their face. No lies, nor fake smiles. Life is this simple. Anyway... I've written kinda a lot... This video actually made me laugh how stupid some animes are. Not even silly but straight out mediocre. But it still put a smile on my face so I guess it's ok only for this.

I only watched the anime (3 seasons), and decided not the read the whole manga based upon this video. I got so fucking hooked by the series, i loved it till season ~2 and then they started to drag it. Considering the pace this story is going, we will see them getting together in the anime on our deathbed like chizuru's grandma watched the movie
