We used to live in Lynnwood. We had a 2-bedroom apartment. Rent went up the first year. In the 2nd year we moved into a cheaper apartment in the same complex. Still 2-bedroom. After that every year for 3 years we had a rent increase. We left Lynnwood & moved to Yakima, WA in 2019. Just one more increase we would have been homeless. Covid started and Yakima rent increased. I had health problems and quit my health care job. By November 2020 we were homeless for a month and a half. Living in our car. By around the end of December, with help from Catholic Charities, we found a low-income apartment for 55 plus. I hate to think of where we'd be without that help. It's a big change. From working full time and being able to pay my own rent to having to rely on others for help. We need to get the cost of housing under control now. Sorry, this is long.

Would've been cool if they would have mentioned the average price of two bedroom apts currently in Tacoma. Seems applicable to this story. **shrugs** Guess I'll Google...

A lot of people have to share rent due to not being able to qualify to rent an apartment on their own. A lot of Apartments require that you make 3 times the rent. If your lucky to find a one bedroom apartment for 1300 a month you would have to make $3,900.00 a month. A family member makes $22.50 HR and cant qualify for a one-bedroom or studio apartment anywhere in this area and he makes too much for income restricted apartments. How many people fall in that in between? Then we wonder why there's a homeless problem and why people have to move out of the area.

A lot of renters aren't tuned into the impact of property taxes on the owner. Rent controls help existing renters, but future renters not so much. A house or condo will likely be sold instead of rented before a property owner allows him or herself huge potential losses and headaches caused by a complicated bureaucracy. A landlord will also be going for more intense background checks and more up front money, which will cut more of the people with low incomes out of being able to rent...

Stop raising property taxes. Put a cap on taxes. Problems fixed. If these elected officials won't do there jobs then vote them out.

We need to have rent control now. Landlord's can afford the taxes. If not sale your property. Sounds like greedy Landlord's that want boat's, or buy more buildings to rent. Catch 22. Price gouging during a Pandemic ugg shameful.

You want rent control due to high taxes. So you want the government to fix a problem they created in the first place? Why not lower taxes and decrease government?
@FaceSilence2 жыл бұрын
Rent control isn't that great of a thing. We do need some of it to avoid absurd rent spikes but it's more important for gov to build more affordable housing. Build them and put the price low!

This quickly rising increase in cost of rent needs to stop and be taken control of. At current cost you would have to make almost $80,000 a year to live in a two-bedroom apartment. The average income for most people is around 40k to 50,000 a year. It's definitely contributing to the homeless problem we need to take action to keep rent low and affordable.

Government needs to do all it can to aid in housing starts, and apartment buildings. Need to start zoning areas of Tacoma for high rise apartment buildings. Then give tax breaks to those developers.

Property tax increases don’t track with rent increases overall, obviously a landlord is going to say that, though they obviously make it worse and income taxes are much better generally. We need massive amounts of new multi family construction, some public housing, and modest rent control.

There needs to be laws in place to regulate rent and stop raising taxes it's so hard to live in this state and I'm sure that's a huge contributor forcing people out of homes and living on the streets they taxes this tax that
