I found it very funny because I had a similar experience in Paros a few years back. I called from Athens a small rental company in Paros to reserve a car and was told to call again as soon as I arrive at the airport. When I got there they told me to locate the red Nissan at the small parking lot, “the door is unlocked and the keys are under the mat”! I drove straight to the rental place about 7 Km away and the guy said you can rent this one if you like. When I returned it a week later I paid the guy at the store and asked for a ride to the airport and he said: Take it and park it at the airport but put the key under the mat!!! I honestly loved it! Only in Greece you learn to relax and focus on what matters!!!

The "island" in question is small. Like, you can go around the island with a car and its like 250km total. Its like 2-3 hours to go around the whole island. And everyone is a cousin of a cousin or some sort of relative. Yes they do know alot of "tricks" but there is absolutely no way you can take off with the car.

Rented a car in Crete in 2019. First time there (horrible roads btw😅), Wanted to rent a car for 2 days. Costs almost nothing.. The lady who own our hotel called their guys from the rental.. car was there within an hour. Showed me license, my dad his license. Signed a piece of paper and done. We went out. Brakes were completely done. She called the rental up upset "bring a new one". Bam. New one within 30 minutes😂 Car rental there is the easiest i've ever seen. It's great. Yes, it is exactly like that! So funny. The only place stranger to rent a car is Montenegro. Call about a car rental, car shows up at cafe in 10 minutes, hand him some 💶🇪🇺 , show him passport, hands me keys. Says call me next week sometime. Drove that thing all along the Adriatic. Called him 10 days later, meets me, give him the keys. Done.

Naxos is my favourite island in the world! Spent a week's vacation there one summer, just as the 'Greexit' crisis was happening. The locals were the best hosts possible! People (guesthouse owners etc.) actually thanked us for visiting Greece during these rough times. We stayed near 'St. George' bay, outside Naxos town. Steps from the beach. EVERYTHING was safe and calm. We rented mountain bikes (drove to some villages in the hills) and indeed the owners asked for no documentation. Just wanted to know where we stay. We paid when we got back. Beach was great (just too much sea weed). Food was great. Restaurant prices moderate. The town (Chora, or Naxos town) was lovely. It's a big Island which gives you a feeling of a small island. Just as we were back to Pireus, right after getting on the train, I was pickpocketed! Reminding me of how great and safe Naxos was!

A friend went to a mountain village Anogia in Crete, to look into the taverna that he'd inherited. He went looking for the current operator by name. Locals sat him down for raki (moonshine), asked questions like why he was looking for the man (another raki, another), what he wanted (another), what he looked like. At last more than half-drunk this friend asked openly where he could find the man. The locals pointed to the fellow sitting right next to him.

We rented a car a few times through a friend of a friend in Kalamata who had her own little car rental business. The rental was exactly the same way. I liked seeing everyone else lining up in front of the rental desks, signing their lives away, and with us, Mary would wave to us, give us the keys and point to where the car was parked. We'd be on the road in less than two minutes.

Exactly. As a Greek American, you rent a car in the USA and you run the risk of imprisonment should you put a scratch on the damn thing.

I think he was referring about the delivery time not the delivery day. And that is true especially in islands and viallages people don't really care about small details. On the other hand I was surprised that the car was delivered on time

@@alexp3572 come on guys , in most islands if you rent a car at 10 o clock and you bring it back at 11 they try to charge you more, if you delay 2-3 hours or more they even try to charge a full day..specially when you have paid by card you need to show them you are not willing to pay a full day...and you would report on many social media

Same thing happened to me. Taxi brought me to a house with a bunch of cars outside. They had a problem with their credit card machine so I paid like 30 Euros cash and drove away. I do remember being asked for my license, though.

That's funny because it's true!! On the continantal part of Greece is not that simple, but still is the only country in Europe wewre you don't need a credit card for renting cars! I'm Italian by the way, we already are over relaxed people, but Greek are just on another level, Love them!

As a greek myself, whatever he said is accurate. Especially the part where people reply with another question to you, when they dont want to answer your question.
