I had one of these around 1970-1972. When I was 8 to 10 ish. I couldn't get it to work, because the lifter push rod would flex on the cam and rockers, and jamb the model. My Uncle gave me his for parts, because he could not get his to work either. Finally about a year ago, while digging in the attic, I stumbled across it. And assembled it just for show. I painted the test stand red, and the accessories black and primer grey, to give it a little more realistic engine look. And kept the block and valve cover clear. I think this was a present from my Aunt Ruth. I miss you Aunt Ruth. May you rest in peace.

My Revell kit in the mid 1970s had an electric starter and switch box. My dad wanted to help too! (Even though I was 12 and had done many car models. He helped me break the cam, and we had to drill it out and fit a metal screw into it with the head outside the rear of the block. (If I remember) It did turn over and work! He also insisted on lubing all moving parts with Vaseline. I think it caused more resistance than if just has plastic on plastic. Thanks for taking me down memory lane!
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
Vaseline. Oops. LaBell White Grease is the best. Oil breaks down the plastic which is also oil based. Worst ever? STP. Remember that mess? I used it on slot car tires as it attacked the rubber and made great traction. Burned out the motor because it creates sooo much friction between the tire and track. I digress. Fathers mean well. If you want to see a GREAT movie on the subject look at “Down and Derby”. I guy I know made it. No budget film. But super! About dads taking over their kids pinewood derby contest.

I saved up for that model for months in the sixties. , when I had enough money , my mother took me to buy it one night and she told me to wait until the next day to build it because it was late. I couldn’t wait to build it of course and stayed up all night long to compleat it and finished it off by putting colored water in the oil pan. I was so proud of myself , but I didn’t have a place to display it , so I built a shelf out of some scrap wood that same night and when it was done , I placed the model on the shelf I built and admired it , for about 30 seconds ... because the shelf I built fell off the wall and my model broke into a bunch of pieces. 😎

Hi you two. David and I had no trouble getting ours to work. But we did start with the slant 6 and that requires magic and an Engineering degree to get it to work. For us we just followed the instructions which included sacrificing a chicken. We couldn’t fid a chicken so we used a rubber chicken. Weird but did the trick. Loved the build though. But not as much as the slant 6. The slant 6 came with a “Master Modeler Certificate. Said if you can finish it and make it work you earned the right to display it in your room. Hung there for years. Still not sure it was not real. I think they had some way of checking with Santa or something to make sure you really got it to run.

The Monogram Phantom Mustang. I picked up a complete one recently in the first issue 1961 box. The Mustang was a lot harder to build than the Visible V-8 and to have it functioning properly. You didn't just throw the Phantom Mustang together, you had to check the linkages etc. at each step. The bomb dropping mechanism is real tricky to get to work smoothly.

I had this model and my dad helped me make it work (as well as finding a slow electric motor to turn it). In an early 70's earthquake, the shelf it was on collapsed, destroying the model and a few other Star Trek kits. I salvaged the small spark plug lights and used them in a 1/8 scale Corvette. They lit the Corvette marker lights and the instrument panel. I wish I had photos of all the detail work I put into that car.

Hello Toy Man, I have a Renwal Visible V8 engine model kit, the precursor to the Revell Visible V8 engine kit. I need part number 6, the distributor support. I have a completed Revell Visible V8 engine and the instruction manuals for both kits. The part appears to be identical for both engines, but I cannot pull the part from the Revell engine since it is glued onto the rest of the distributor, which is different on each model. I have looked on Ebay for a black parts kit for this engine but cannot find one. Sincerely, Ian Douglas
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
Hum... that’s a tricky one. Even though the distributor is different will it work? The renewal is a powered model. Some of the Revell kits are but not later ones which use a hand crank. Not sure how many changes there were between the kits. Wondering if that’s why they are different or if it was retooled for other reason not that it matters. You need the support bracket. I have hundreds of slant 6 parts but only an unbuilt visible V8. As it was no doubt glued with old school MEK or other solvent glue like testers in a tube, they will never come apart! Super glue falls apart on its own over time! Wondering if you can cut the distributor away without damaging the bracket and reshape as best you can with knives and files. Would kill the distributor but no big deal. The goal is getting the bracket off it. At some point another parts kit may turn up on eBay but the goal is use what you have. Good luck!

@@ToyManTelevision OK, thanks for the info. I will have to make a distributor support from a piece of steel tubing and some shim stock I have. I do have a fully assembled and working Revell visible V8 engine but it is hand cranked; I am looking forward to finishing the Renwal engine so I can see the lamps lighting up to represent the spark plugs being lit. I already have the model motorized and moving with the pistons, camshaft, valve trains, etc. - Ian Douglas

Yes! Upcoming show. The visible Wasp Huge. About a foot across. One of the companies made a smaller non visible and there are several small scale, about 1/8 scale so not that small, by Williams. The Renwal visible one from the 60s is rare and expensive. One on eBay right now for like 1150.00. Nuts. The 1982 release by Revell is also hard to find but much easier. Still sells for as much as 450 though. Now if you could find one somewhere someone built that can be restored.... perhaps as low as 100 to 50 or so. None on eBay right now.
