We had a balanced budget when the top earners paid the highest tax rates. Both in the 50’s, which many “conservatives” harken back to as some idyllic age and when corporate taxes were much higher, and under Clinton. The GOP has successfully promoted this myth that they are better with the economy than Democrats when reality is the opposite.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in... As a US citizen and in my 60's, I've seen one common thing with my country, and that is an obsession for money. For some, it's about feeling in control and safe from the outside world. For a very few it's the ability to use money as a weapon to hurt people. I feel we are at a crossroads for our very existence. I believe that no matter what your religious outlook on life is, we need to find common ground and find a way to live in harmony with each other and the gorgeous blue dot we live on.

Eliminating the deficit and debt is very easy. 1. Decide what Government will do. 2. Determine the cost. 3. Tax citizens equitably to cover the cost. I personally like a flat tax on all income above the poverty level and even support those below the poverty line receiving a "refund" to help them. If the Elon Musks of the country were paying a modest 17% income tax, we would likely be near a balanced budget. Instead, Warren Buffet pays a lower rate than his secretary. I am not "Soak The Rich!" by any means. I just believe that if a group gets 50% of the total income of the country that they should be paying 50% of the taxes.

It's the razor's edge. But it's also the responsibility of the congregation or population to keep the church or government solvent enough to function. So the clergy or the government must be mindful of their solvency while at the same time fulfilling their primary function. You can't help anybody with a shuttered establishment. And that is why you have my undying admiration. The congregation usually does its best to fulfill their responsibility. It would be nice if billionaires did theirs. Even some billionaires say so. Nothing is stopping them, so talk's cheap.

Since we are no longer on the gold standard, government spending with an owned and controlled currency occurs not by taking money from taxes or other revenue, but by creating new money, which the government has the power to do in unlimited amounts electronically. Taxes are collected to control the amount of money being circulated and that's why taxes should only be collectedly from the rich.

I think it was Pope Benedict [XVI] that said that churches fail when they focus on maintenance (keeping the doors open) instead of mission (outreach and growth). The Church isn't on a mission. The Church IS mission (or it's not the Church). My pastor may have added the last piece. My parish in the United States supports parishes in Nepal, Haiti, Guatemala, and Rwanda. We have a "native son" priest in Kyrgyzstan and have lay missionaries at college campuses around the country. We feed the poor locally, visit prisons and assisted living facilities, and GREATLY increased our collection amounts per week during COVID because the need increased. Having seen the return on the donations and the continued need, the offerings have stayed high or increased. We are mission.

These “conservatives” either are being disingenuous or they are ignorant of the fact that personal spending and federal investing are not the same. Getting into debt buying luxuries and consumables is not the same as investing in security and infrastructure, education and health. One only takes money away from you, the other gives returns on the money spent.

I'd usually put my money on disingenuous. Many of these folks (more so the Senate than the House) attended Ivy League schools; they understand how these things work. House members aren't dumb, either (well, mostly; I'm not super sure a few, like Boebert, know how to read).

"government exists to take care of the people" - in the USA, politics is a debate about what "taking care of the people" means combined with the "art" of acquiring power to further one's vision. The "art" of acquiring power costs a LOT of money and the rules of the game favor Big Money. Big Money corrupts, prioritizing "taking are of" Big Money - and not all peoples in the nation. "Culture war" issues are deployed to divide the people - and Big Money uses that division and distraction to further Big Money's goals. Shoot, Big Money is even increasing its control over college football, what with NIL. the transfer portal and caps of team sizes.... Didn't Jesus talk about money a lot? Why?
