This is a video showing my process for creating a new faceup for a fashion doll. I go over hair making, making patterns and sewing clothes, accessory making, and painting the face.

Glad it was helpful! It was something that stumped me in the beginning too and I always wanted to know exactly when other artists sprayed so I figured others out there were like me and wanted to know :)

She turned out nice ! A lot prettier than I expected ! I like the way you explain what your'e doing in detail . The final look for the eyes was perfect ! I've noticed a lot of repaint artist draw the " cat eye " look the way your first attempt looked . If I may suggest , you want to perfect that look , check out comic book artists Jose Gonzales , Gonzalo Mayo , and Esteban Maroto . They were masters of the cat eye look !

Thanks, she turned out a bit sweeter looking than I was originally going for but those original blushing colors were a bad choice for the green skin tone. By the time I got to my colors right I was tired of drawing it that way :D Thanks for the tips, those OG comic artists were great! Having to churn out that much content before the days of photoshop is super impressive.

For the yarn wefts, I modified a wire hanger by clipping the far end to make it easy to slide off the loops once the yarn's been brushed out and clipped for wefting. I'm learning so much from you. I never would have thought about rerooting the hair line and then gluing the rest of the head. It makes the hairline look so much more natural. Thank you so much!

So glad you found it useful! I always liked the look of the rooted hairline but never could get the amount of hair right for the rest of the head so they would look like giant puffballs or too many bald spots so this seemed like a good combo.

Wow, she is gorgeous! So many beautiful details, and that face is perfection. Love the soft, wild reroot as well. And what an incredibly informative video! You shared so much about the process as you transformed Frankie. Thank you for sharing your mistakes as well. Anyone who creates anything, from fine art to jewelry to all kinds of crafts (I used to work in a contemporary craft gallery and would name way too many if I got started), knows that frustration and can relate. Sharing mistakes really does help other artists avoid making the same ones themselves. I wish more doll artists would do the same. There's also reassurance in seeing someone so talented and experienced make the occasional whoops. It makes those still learning feel so much better about their own mistakes, with far less self recrimination when they inevitably happen. You're one of the best, and watching you have to make adjustments gives new artists encouragement. Seeing the finished doll and how stunning she is makes mistakes feel far less disastrous. End of essay. I wanted to express how informative and inspiring this video is, and got a bit carried away. I stand by every word, though.

I am glad you found this video useful, she was my very first recorded custom and I was so nervous to do it (probably contributed to the many missteps) I am very big on showing the mistakes and showing growth as well. I often see lots of artists first starting out really doubting themselves and like to show my first faceup (which was a hot mess) to where I am now to show everyone starts somewhere and you only get better with practice.

It started out as convenient glue palette since I could just scrape my dried glue off but turned out to be super helpful in the long run!

Thank you! I took metal knitting needles of different thicknesses and heated them with my flat iron and wrapped the hair around them.
