Repainting Roof Rail Moulding On my BMW E46 M3

In this video you will learn how to remove, repaint and reinstall your roof rail moulding. This was done on my 2001 BMW E46 M3. I feel most of the techniques I used will work very well with other makes of roof molding / other vehicle parts.

If you have trouble aligning the clips with the tabs on the car during installation, I found clipping the clips to the tabs on the car and then just pushing the trim onto them is much easier than having the clips attached to the trim beforehand

Protip for anyone who wants to do this: you can remove the rails easier and without risking damage to your bodywork if you pop open the two covers where a roof rack would mount and then pull up the rails from there, holding onto the covers or the underside of the rail that's now been exposed.

would it be a bad idea to paint this trim without removing it ?

Removing them seems easier than masking off the rest of the car to prevent overspray.

I agree, I did not even think about painting it on the car as removing was so easy. I think it would be possible to leave on the car but all the sanding and prep work would be way easier and less risky off of your vehicle. Best of luck and happy project!
