Amazing! It's interesting to see the different approaches to deal with temperature. There is temperature control, thermal isolation, there is material science/device design temperature invariance, there's temperature compensation (and software calibration), and finally there's the union of several methods to get the absolute best results! I believe quartz watches (e.g. casio) use a mix of stable temperature dependence with thermometers. The problem of course is that temperature changes can't be too quick, thermometer precision is limited, and the temperature may not be uniform across the entire device. But you do what's possible under small device constraints! Great video as usual :)

Talking a bout foam, I work for a company called Sealed Air who make a foam called "synergy" that you can CNC (its a Polyethylene based foam so the melting temperature is a bit low and it can be a little bit messy, but the sales pitch is you can recycle it), and our best competitor is a company called Zotefoams make a REALLY nice to CNC foam called Plastazote. Both CNC really well. They are both packaging foams and a few of our customers will 3D CNC packaging trays out of them. I'm scratching my head trying to think of a fabricator who may be able to give you a sample in Germany, but it has been years since i spoke to them last. I have just been asked to scrap a load of 50mm Synergy material, so may be able to box some up and ship some out to you if you would like a sample?

Hey Marco, u might be interested in "kieselgu(h)r" as an insulation material. I have seen there r sort of cinder blocks too, but not yet found a source how good it insulates compared to vacuumed variants. Some cold storage cell manufacturer use that vacuumed material, but it due it's complex manufacturing and fully welded cells, it is very costly for big(ger) scale applications.

If you're OK with no display and only care about stability and not absolute temperature (using a multimeter to set the setpoint), wavelength electronics sells similarly-performing board-level controllers for ~$100. Most garden-variety thermistors have excellent relative stability, you could probably design something yourself to do something similar if you're careful with component selection. You're really paying for the enclosure, PSU, ADCs, display, etc.
@martylawson16384 жыл бұрын
AAAH shielded cable on your temperature probe BAD! It's a great way to get a large sensitivity to ambient temperature when you're trying to just measure what the temperature controller is doing. Also, if your TEC controller isn't asking for the parameters of the TEC, it's leaving performance on the table. (unless it measures them) A very simple 1st order inverse TEC model lets you use FAR more agressive PID gains for better disturbance rejection. Which leads into the biggest problem with 0.004C stability. The limits of the physical system being cooled...
@billybbob182 жыл бұрын
I wonder which is more thermally conductive; Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste or aluminum? If the paste is more thermally conductive then you would want a pitted surface to increase the area of the transfer.
