I have the same issue, I’ve done it before and the best advice is to do it in layers, if you do it all at once like this the whole thing could fall right off due to the weight of the new cement. Do a thin layer and let it dry for 24 hours

I have done that job for 30 years, what I do I put some 3/8 rebar, I make the concrete with sand, gravel with Portland cement mixed with water and glue, after it is dry I cut the corner between the brick and the Foundation to take the pressure off from the weight of the wall to the Foundation, and in the cut you cover it with silicone

How does a corner pop occur? Lack of a vapor barrier between the brick mortar and foundation. Before the brick is installed the bricklayer runs a sheet plastic that goes in behind and under the brick. The goal is to provide a vapor barrier that goes underneath the brick and behind the brick. Where the problem is created when the plastic is installed the plastic is cut off even with the wall stud corner post and is not run all the way to the end of the foundation corner. Then the wall adheres to the foundation at the corners. The daily expansion of the wall and foundation then the corner breaks. Most of the time where you see the end of the plastic is where you see the crack at both sides. I've inspected many new homes with cracked foundation corners and the buyers haven't moved into the home yet. In my opinion, how to repair would be to t ake a hammer drill and 3-inch concrete screws set the concrete screws to go in at the corner at a 45-degree angle leave like 1 inch of the concrete screws sticking out and apply epoxy to rebuild the corner. Also tape a piece of plastic where the plastic is missing. To my understanding bag, concrete will not work because foundations can be as high as 3000 psi type concrete making for two dissimilar concretes.

@dhtsoaedsdhtnadi95753 жыл бұрын
3:10 i can edit you loud mouth out. lol!!! seriously though, these can be prevented by lapping the corners of the brick ledge, something nobody does any more because bottom line is about profit. what's happening... when concrete is plastic it climbs up the inside corners of the forms by capillary action. the concrete sets up with a slight incline at the corners. it's so slight you can't see it without a reference, but throw a long straightedge (something precision like a 6-ft framing level) and you will see a gap of daylight near the corners. this incline is enough for the expanding bricks to push against and cause microfracturing at the corner. winter freeze/thaw enlarges the microfracture causing the slough aka corner pop.

This looks exactly like one of the corners of my house. Some of the info online is scary, and indicates that when crumbling occurs, the integrity of the home is compromised. But this looks more cosmetic, and I hope that's all I have going on at my house.
@hammershomereno Жыл бұрын
If it’s just at the corner of your foundation then it’s not a structural issue, it’s Just cosmetic. All the pressure on the inside of the house pushes outward and the corners are the weakest part. If you have cracks in brick walls that are 1”+ then that’s concerning. If you have cracks on your foundation floor that you can fit a pencil eraser end through, then that’s concerning as well. But hairline cracks are normal, so don’t freak out if there’s smaller cracks like that. Thanks for watching! You have no worries on these corners!

Ok , bonding agent must be used first and hydraulic cement is preferred. Otherwise it's going to crack again and fall off in a year

I’ll make sure to let my structural engineer know your thoughts
@Marcoosianism3 жыл бұрын
I would have used a regular sand/portland mix with a portland-glue slurry as a primer but I don't see the need for hydraulic cement which is mainly used to prevent water leaks. Hydraulic cement also bonds less to old concrete, though I see you did advise a bonding agent first.
@sherevejohnson94224 жыл бұрын
That probably fell out... lol .. it's too wet. You should do layer by layer. Wait for one layer to solidify, screw holes and put nail or tie wire in the whole for strength and then another layer. 👍🏽 do a video with you tapping the patch you've done with a hammer. I want to see results

Your statement that " cement "is weaker in corners of a foundation is normal, IS FALSED ! First, it is not " cement " but " concrete ".... Cement is one of an ingredient that produces concrete. A properly poured foundation would not produce corners to chip off like the one in your video. That situation was caused by water added to to the concrete mix when pouring, affecting its strength. Secondly, your patch work will definitely not last more than two years. What you have put is a mortar and the thickness of what you have put will not hold, especially if this house is in a harsh winter condition zone. Basically, there isn't nothing on the market that will do a proper and long lasting job for this type of repair. I am a Civil Engineering Technologist specialized in concrete....
@hammershomereno4 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said. This repair was on a house being sold and the buyer wanted it fixed. Even though they were told it was purely cosmetic and would crack again within a couple years. It’s the nature of the beast. Thanks for watching!

@hammershomereno Жыл бұрын
Funny thing is that nothing will hold up on the corners over time. It’s the simple physics and pressure of a home sitting on a slab, the weakest points are the edges. It’s a cosmetic issue, not structural. Thanks for watching, have a blessed day!
