Very well done repair and informative video on Parging repair. It is a big job for the DIY’er.

in Canada you have to use a white bonding glue to add to the Portland .also using fibermesh is a good idea do 1 coat, imbed the mesh and cover mesh with 2nd coat. will last 10x longer than if you didn't.
@patmcglone53675 жыл бұрын
David - thank you. Is the mesh only used if the surface has extreme holes or is it used as a general rule? I very much appreciate the video and your experience.
@grassabrutta4 жыл бұрын
Never use mesh. Cement and concrete expand. Then water gets in. The mesh turns to mush. Then you get cracking and decay and water ingress. Then you're back to step 1. Look up Mike Haduck's channel. I think these folk already know about Mike anyway.

I agree with David Calderone with regard to an embedded mesh basecoat. I think that the basecoat should be a polymer reinforced mortar mix... Similar to a basecoat used by stucco applicators. It is a same day product. Also, I always use a finishing trowel to apply all coats and it comes up much smoother. Using a bonding agent is never a bad idea.. Of course, the cost will increase dramatically using all of the materials I use, but it lasts much longer and looks beautiful when applied properly.

I watched video with great interest, was expecting a lovely smooth finish in the end. Not to detract from all your hard work, however there is a difference with professional level work. These folks are trained from childhood in masonry work, pay them it is worth it.

Sure, wait a good week before sealing.

Also, definitely use a bonding agent on any painted surfaces.

How about bonding agent ? That stuff that looks like white glue. I can't get my cement to stop separating over time. Is it ok for exterior use ? I live in Canada. Lot's of freeze/thaws.
@samyar12310 жыл бұрын
This was done in Mississauga Ont. and even after the bad winter the cement is without any problems. The work was done on the outside foundation. Make sure you water the surface really well before applying the cement. It will bond and hold better. Hope that helps. Ray

JoeGancher I gave up with parging mix. Now I only use portland based modified tile thinset. I wait a month for it to dry then prime it first with Zinser 123, followed by rona's recycled paint with a small amount of playsand added. And yes I live in canada.

I think I have separation between the concrete slab and wall because water is coming into my home .I've called a foundation repair company but is this a job for a Mason?
@samyar1238 жыл бұрын
If it is a crack you may need to dig out from the outside. I have done this and sealed the crack with a common repair material.

How long after parging do you do the final step of smoothing with a hand sponge. I have a corner repair where the cinder block crumbled and I did the repair and now I need to parge and smooth it out. I don;t want to knock concrete off if it is not dry/hard enough. Thanks.

Thanks for the video post I have about the same amount needed how much would it exactly cost for me the DIY guy in materials compared to paying a bunch of goons from a company. And everyone send Thanks to TheSillypat for the tip on the 4x10 trowel eh i check it out, just like anything else you get better with experience.

Hi J Mills In answer to your question the cost is cheap - the price of 1/2 bag of cement. Tools are extra. Hope that helps. Ask if you need more info. Ray

looks like it was someones first attempt at a wheel barrow... lol and it even had 2 wheels on the front! each your Wheaties son... were you teaching them to parge? theres a couple different companies out there that make a cement bonding agent. kinda looks like white glue used in schools... brush or roll that on first, then make your repairs. glue in between each layer you apply. it'll make for a long lasting repair. if this was in Canada or most Northern states, you wouldnt get more than 2 yrs before it falls apart again without the bonding agent!
@Arriscraft8 жыл бұрын
your mix is way to dry . Sorry this is just my opinion and i do it for a living !

are you kidding me?? what in the hell am I watching here? I have been a bricklayer for 21 years, this is the worst and I mean the worst example of parging in my life. first of all you should be patching with hydrolic cement as it dries in 5 min and you can keep working, also bond needs to be used, its white and looks like glue, I can parge that house myself in one day,, also the finished product looks like hell. cement is way too hard should be like pudding, and why brush on water? spray it on if need be, AND PLEASE WHAT IS A SPONGE TROFF? DOES HE MEAN TRAWEL, ITS A FUCKING FLOAT, also if you know anything about cement you should not recoat cement after its too dry as it wont bond, second coat same day or add bond to it again
