Why do I need to do a Repair Installation?
You have tried System Restore and it did not help fix your Windows 7 issues.
You have tried all options ie: chkdsk /r sfc /scannow system restore etc etc to fix your Windows 7 Installation.
You do not want to do a fresh install of Windows 7.
You do want to preserve your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers.
So if you have answered all above then the time is right to do a Repair Install of your Operating System.
Your need:
1. Standard Win7 installation DVD
2. Original 25-character product key (This can be found on a sticker on your PC/Laptop or paperwork that come with your retail copy of Windows 7.)

3. Doing a Repair Install with Windows 7 SP1 with a Pre-SP1 DVD?, then you need to uninstall SP1 before proceeding with the Repair Install. Just uninstall from add and remove programs like I show you in the video.
4. In-case it goes wrong, remember Backup, Backup, Backup before you proceed with the Repair Install.

I'm a little confused. You say to back up the system yet the video is about repairing W7. Now I might be wrong but if I can make a backup then it doesn't need repairing and if it needs repairing then I can't make a back up because being in dis-repair am unable to boot or what ever. So a repair install without reformatting you start out by saying make a backup.....hmmmm. My issue is my boot manager is missing ergo a repair install and I'm seeing that this repair install can not be done with a DVD and has to be done on a running OS. I think this vid need to be called UPGRADE not so much Repair Install because in my mind if it runs posts and boots up then it is in working order and to repair something it is not in running order.

SFC /SCANNOW to start then if that still leaves corrupt files then run SFCFix then SFC /SCANNOW again had to do that myself and it works. My issue at the time was boot manager was missing and was unable to boot, unable to do a repair install, so I just reinstalled the OS again. Had all the stuff I wanted to keep on a USB drive the PITA was all the M$ updates. Wish there was a way to save those 200 some odd things.

+Sam Moss this is when you boot from the windows disk and do a "START-UP REPAIR". That will cure your problem of a no BOOT in about 10 min or so...

+ArcanePath360 yeah i was having issues with booting to the desktop and just getting to the system, ergo the repair. have since moved on to W10 and with that (thank goodness) you can do an 'in place' repair using a .iso or thumb drive that more or less 'refreshes' your OS. i keep photos and that sort of thing on thumb drives and if need be of a complete OS reinstall just bite the bullet and reinstall about 2TB's of games on storage hdds. too i have moved on to Macrium Reflect (on a seperate drive along with WinPE to boot to it if need be so as not to lose those dad blamed registry files) for W10 as the built in System Image has issues. agree about the files and stuff but at the time i could not access that and was solely looking for a 'repair'.

Have you heard people talk about - Ginro Computify Fixer - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my m8 got great success with it.

a fresh instal is the only way you want to go, repairing windows like this slows down your system as old files and folders are left clogging up the system, registry files etc. not really great idea. fresh instal only

Agreed. I've done this kind of thing many times with this version and previous versions of Windows. Fresh install is cleaner. It is a hassle for sure but peace of mind and a better running system is a higher priority for me.

This is absolutley no use at all if you cant run windows in the first place! It was brilliant in windows XP, an in place upgrade/repir install would fix most problems 99% of the time, was also useful if you changed hardware, eg a motherboard.

Here's something to take note of for those contemplating an "upgrade repair". I recently worked this repair method on my Windows 7 64-bit in order to attempt to fix some corrupted system files that could not be repaired using SFC/scannow, command. I wanted to avoid having to to reformat my entire drive or even reapply a system image (which technically must reformat your drive before installing the image, to do it). The entire process took about 3 1/2 hours to complete. Here's why. First off, I have about 83gb worth of data on my C drive, which the repair "upgrade" utility had to gather before moving forward, as you saw in this video. That took almost 30 minutes to complete, alone. By the way, I actually did this using a bootable Windows 7 64bit on a USB stick. As soon as the gathering of files was completed, the rest of the process took about 15 minutes or so to finalize. Then, as soon as I returned back to my desktop, everything seemed fine, but then I was presented with a lil' surprise from Windows Update. Apparently, I had to reinstall EVERY update back into my system. That's over 200 updates! I doubled checked my installed update list to make certain this wasn't a mistake and sure enough, only 2 hot fixes were installed during repair but not a single security patch to be found. At this point, I facepalmed hard.... But I went ahead and allowed all the important and recommended updates to download and install in the background. Basically, took about 1 or so, hours to download it all (because sometimes it takes a while for your computer to connect with Windows Update online) and then an additional hour and a half to install them all. After several self restarts, my computer successfully reinstalled every single update without a fail and my machine ran smooth. No more crashes, etc. HOWEVER... I was told by my system, to remove iTunes before moving forwards with the upgrade repair which I accidentally ignored and sure enough, my iTunes did not work after a second reboot, when everything went back to normal. To fix this minor issue, I simply uninstalled iTunes, then restarted, then reinstalled the latest iTunes software. Everything peachy now. But this TOOK FOREVER. The video makes it seem like it'd take only a few minutes. It's good to know, depending on what you have running under the hood and how much stuff you have in your boot drive, the repair process can take hours. A system image restore takes far less time and so long as you made the snap shot when your system was running perfectly, you should have no issues. Everything, including your last desktop wallpaper, game settings, etc, will be back where you last left them when you first created your system image back up. Anyways, thanks for sharing the helpful vid. It really does work to repair your operating system. It can take a long time though. But worth it in the end.

Yeah, sometimes Repair Install don't work...but you have nothing to lose and if it works, it will save you a lot of time. But its when to know when to do a fresh install, sometimes this is not a option for some people.

You can also open the the windows 7 disc & right click on setup.exe application, Select properties-Select compatibility-select run as XP-Then run the setup .exe application There is no need to delete service pack 1 as it will get over written

If you have Autorun on which is by default, the CD will start up, if not go to my computer and your see your CD in the drive and click on it and it will start up.

You can install windows from a copied windows 7 cd, but you must use your licence for your windows 7, and make sure your installing the right version of windows.

I have a problem getting my laptop to enter safe mode so I can repair some but issues in the background so I've just completed the update as per this video, something I wouldn't have been able to do were it not for the concise and simple process explained. HELP!!! I can't even boot into Windows 7 Ultimate, not even from installation media like USB, and repair no longer will pop up in Advanced Boot Options. When I boot my USB flash drive installer it never reaches the installation screen even. The PC just reboots over and over every time I try to boot into anything... all of the safe modes, standard WIndows mode. I got nothing, man. I can't boot into any mode in windows

After uninstalling Service Pack 1, the system asks for a restart. If you do that, the system will not boot up. It will tell you that the computer failed to start and give you the option to do a Start up Repair.If you chose that ption, Windows will install the Service Pack again. So?? Your video does not indicate wether to restart or not after uninstalling the Service Pack, but since it does not indicate so, one must asume that you DO NOT restart the system after uninstalling the service pack but rather go directly to the set up from the DVD. IS THAT CORRECT?

CAUTION!!! Pay close attention to the 1st screen you get when you run the Windows 7 dvd. If you don't get the screen with INSTALL on it or you get a screen about moving you files to a window.old folder before it begins installing, then it will delete your programs. I think this means the DVD probably doesn't have the upgrade option. I tried multiple versions of windows 7 64 bit dvd before I finally found one.

It means to use this method of repair you will need to be at desktop ie: PC must be booted up and you see your wallpaper on screen which is called the desktop.

This will break your installed programs. You'll have to reinstall them plus you end up with the window.old folder. not as innocent as it looks

Do you think this will repair a laggy keyboard? My son's computer started acting up yesterday, and I did all the malware scans & virus scans & repairs that I can. Tried the keyboard repeat rate thing, reinstalling video card / drivers. Uninstalling & re-installing the USBcontroller, etc...Nothing worked. He types and it's ok for about 12 characters, then lags. Outside of windows (at the password enter screen), it types fine, so to me it's a windows issue. What do you think?

Hi Brian, My laptop computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate. It's a Dell Studio XPS 1645. I'm trying to uninstall Windows Service Pack 1 from my computer and see if I can reinstall Windows 7 without Reformatting my computer. When I look in the Control Panel for Windows Updates Windows 7 SP1 KB:976932 there is no option to uninstall it. Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB976932) Control Panel > Programs > Program and Features > Installed Updates> Uninstall an Update. I have also tried Command Prompt: wusa.exe /uninstall /KB976932. That did not work Either. I did a scan with sfc /scannow it told me it had found errors on the computer. But it could not fix them until I restart the computer. Are there any other options besides the ones I have tried? I also used CCleaner (Piriform) to clean computer with the CCleaner Registry Cleaner to fix the Registry, Auslogics Registry Cleaner to clean and fix the Registry, Free Slim Cleaner to clean the computer and fix the Registry, RogueKiller to clean and fix the registry, HiJackThis to clean and fix the Registry (It also saved my computer from High CPU Usage). Combofix it helped me get rid of bad viruses and some other bad stuff. Revo Uninstaller to Uninstall and get rid of programs and junk I did not need, Spybot Search and Destroy Version 2 to get rid of spyware.

Ron Barker I have used Disk Cleanup in the past. I tried to keep the files needed to uninstall SP1. But I have must have deleted those files needed to uninstall it with other programs I was using? I have a few windows.old, windows.old1 windows.old000 Folders and Files I am trying to overwrite with other files. So, I can have more Hard Drive space. Plus I do have some important files and folders on those windows.old files and folders.

Dear Britec 09... I have a Sony Vaio laptop (VPCEG35EG) and fail to recover back to factory condition. After more than 2 hours processing, finally it fail to boot up and error message appear on the screen: "The instruction at 0xfc10584d referenced memory at 0x00000008. The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program." I 've tried one more time, but then error message appear like this: "Signature failure... bla-bla-bla..." What should I do? My windows won't start, I got a blue screen, tried a repair and it couldn't fix it. Now I only get 2 options (don't recall them) try repair and normal startup I think. When I try to boot it will run post, then windows 7 icon, freezing for a second while still orbs before they are the flag, then it'll continue to the flag and after a couple minutes it just restarts. Would a DVD repair/install work to fix it? I havnt tried safe mode yet since it isn't giving me the option.

At 4:21 where did that "Windows 7 with the Install Now button" window come from (how was it started)? It just magically appeared! Is it from inserting the Windows 7 DVD? or running Setup on the Windows 7 DVD? Will this delete any viruses or malware on the PC? It's been many years PC manufacturer had not provided the full Windows Installation DVD. Instead, we are provided with some cut down Recovery CD of some sort. Us consumers are getting less and less for our money. So, now I'm stuck as my laptop was one of those that were upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium edition 64bit (no Windows CD/DVD was provided). The same with my Windows 7 Professional Desktop 64bit - only came with a Recovery CD. Seriously thinking about installing free Ubuntu Linux and it's free Office tools onto this laptop.

Ok, I have an interesting conundrum. My windows 7 (64bit) disk is a special alienware version, and when it starts up (having followed all the previous instruction in the v.o.d., including the installing of Service Pack 1), it doesn't present the same options that the one in the v.o.d. did. It doesn't bring up "Get important updates for installation" and it also doesn't ask "Which type of installation do you want?". It just goes straight from the license agreement to "Unpacking Windows files" and doesn't say its gathering files. Should I be concerned? Is it / am I doing something incorrectly or is my Alienware Windows 7 64bit disk not capable of a repair install, and further more, what are my alternatives, if any?

If you downloaded the magicjellybean application that Britec09 provided, the "CD Key" would be the key you use. I live chatted with a Microsoft employee on their site recently and the young man gave me a URL that'll "wipe out my entire system" It was basically an ISO compatible with my Windows 7 64-bit (2 hour download for me).

Akansal Butt, a simple way to know about the OS : boot his system with a bootable dvd/usb/whatever, and then simply look up the directory structure of the system drive : windows XP-Vista-7 have distinct differences allowing you to detect which one is in use. However, that won't tell you if it is Ultimate, Professional or such, unless you know exactly what system service files make up each of these flavors of one OS.

I have created a System Recovery Media USB from my Toshiba laptop. This has the OEM Windows 7 operating system on it as well as Toshiba's drivers and bits and bobs. Will I be able to do this repair install from this USB stick? Other option is: DVD x 4 discs.

When creating a repair and recovery disc? Where does it get save? My windows is installed on hard drive. When I created a repair and recovery on a DVD-R disc and it has created it on my D: drive. Different issue; Ran Windows updates, when restarting to apply changes it will not go back into Windows...Tried repair and does not work, Sys Restore does not work, last known good configuration does not work...anyway to uninstall recent updates using cmd? Safe Modes also do not work, so can only use cmd from the Repair computer option after hitting F8

Really liked this video, very clear and concise. But I have SP1 installed but it does not show up in 'Installed Updates'. Presumably SP1 was included on my installation CD. Do I still need to remove SP1 and if so how do I find out where it is?

Thanks for your help. I saw a similar video in wich the guy did the same as you. Upgrading windows from the desktop to repair it. But after he was done, there was the known ´´Windows.old´´ folder. And he moved some documents from the .old folder to the repaired windows. But after the repair he lost all of his desktop icons. even he did the same as in your video. So if i follow your video, does that mean i will keep all my desktop icons? Meaning all my previous installed programs without having to install them again?

And another thing, When i click on the windows dvd, all i see are my hard drive letters to choose on wich partition i want to install windows. I don't get that ''install'' windows like yours. So i don't get the upgrade window. All i get is the windows to choose partion 'C, D or E to make a fresh install of windows. I too have the same problem of not being able to uninstall service pack 1 from my Windows 7 professional o/s. But I used my pre sp1 dvd anyway and it works, because when the program connects to the internet to update itself, it applies the later sp1 version automatically to the installation. After that it ran fine for me after removing itunes from my desktop computer.

I am unable to get to the desktop from safe mode or any other mode. If I boot to the win7 disc and choose upgrade which should re-install windows OS files will this in-turn lose all pictures and files on the computer

so like i just changed my mother board and cpu to i-5 and now i did the mistake of run the recommanded settings now i watched your video to see if i can fix that problem but while watching your video i realised that it requires me to get into my desktop mean while in System repair.

I know this is an old video and the ISO is not longer supported, but a repair stalls and hangs at "Gathering files, settings and programs..." every time.

how can I do that if I'm not able boot into windows, each time I get startup repair? I tried using this method when booting from the win 7 usb flashdrive but it said something like 'windows needs to be running to update, please restart and run windows'

I had this problem, did something close to this procedure, got back up and running, but with plenty of ongoing hiccups, app failures, and internet connectivity issues, none of which ever could be locked down...Since I had most of my stuff already saved on a succession of disks, I just went ahead and reformatted the HD and started over...Everything worked fine then, but it took the better part of a month to get things back where I was...

Hi Britec 09, yesterday i used a hacking tool, that enabled me to post URL on yahoo comments and here on youtube. I logged in with my yahoo email account, and posted a URL website address on the comment section of a newsfeed. The next day i tried logging back to yahoo with the same email address, and as you can guess i couldn't. I am wondering, was i hacked? I am using Brutus to hack back my email password, but yahoo doesn't use pop3 anymore, so i doubt it will work. What can i do? Pls HELP ME!!

Why does the service pack need to be uninstalled? Wait I need a boot disk, how do I do that? (If not I could totally use one) All I need for the repair install is the damn cd the computer came with?! =O How the fuck are you still recording. sorry about about m anger but I need to do this right cuz if my files or something is fucked up im definitely not going to be a happy camper.

Brian I actually ran into a situation in Vista where I did a repair and actually lost some data files. What I found is that even if you save to the hard drive it is still not a fool proof way that the data won't get removed (or overwritten) during a repair (or restore). Windows does a system wide save which would basically make sure that in the event a user repairs or restores the system personal files are not lost. I have never found a place in Windows that controls when that save happens.

Thanks brian :-) Ive never done this with 7 yet, xp and others i have. Sometimes ive found even replacing files does not fix the problem, so all data is backed up including keys and a list of the drivers installed. Then killdisk is used to remove everything. If its an old install of windys it can really be very very slow, even after deinstalls/cleanups/defrags/re­gclean and other attempts to speed it up. a fresh install does a world of good with an old install :-)

Agreed mate :-), i would love to know what slows windys down over time, ive done everything i can to some systems to make it faster and failed, killdisk and a fresh install often turns them into a rocketship. Ive allways wondered if microsoft has a date dependant slowdown designed on purpose, me and conspiracy thoughts lol.

with pre installed windows 7 laptop/pc ,it isnt possible to repair windows only option is factory settings ,and start from scratch microsoft doesnt even have customer support if windows came installed with the computer,,they charge money then they only help if you bought a loose version on disk

Dear Brian, i tried to repair my windows7, but i can;t enter windows. It freezes before windows ever loads. Simply a back screen. Pressing F8 to enter safe mode never pops up. Tried with windows recovery console via the DVD but says no windows was detected. Help please?
