I'm shocked that this is happening. I've installed hundreds of windows around the bay area, mostly Oakland and Berkeley and the flashing is not that complicated. You essentially want to sandwich the flange in straight sticky flashing. Bottom both sticky and non, so you can have building paper tuck under. Silicone and install window and use sticky flash over nail strip on the sides and top. Only thing that I would consider is whether or not to cover the bottom nail strip. Some window manufacturers don't like that and want the nail strip exposed.

Hi Kirk - your videos are very informative. I do feel the pain and anguish of those homeowners that are unable to find the right individual to install their windows. I just bought a 1988 built home in southern California. The house is in good condition but nothing was ever done. I want to give it a shot at fixing many things in the home. I consider myself handy, however, there are things that are more complicated than others and may require an actual "expert". Finding an actual "expert" for a reasonable cost in CA is the biggest challenge of them all! Anyhow, my windows are original to the home and therefore need some strong TLC (replacement is the best word here). The cost of window replacement is upwards to the 15K. My home is stucco and there aren't many videos of people changing windows of stucco homes. I want to try doing it one window at a time to see if it is possible. Do you have any suggestions on how to go about? I did not see any videos of you actually changing a window on stucco. The couple of videos I saw, they made it look quite simple and the videos are over 10 year old. Any thoughts, it'll be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My house that I recently stuccoed had old windows where the frame was essentially just one by’s. I couldn’t find any info on how to properly flash them, as most windows have those flanges on the edges that sit flush with the wall. I basically just put the flashing tape in the center of the wood of the window frames. Hope I did that correctly.

Morning Happy Dude, there are many ways to skin a cat. Anyone who did not install a window correctly, hopefully, will find out with the first notable rainfall. If it takes ten years to see water intrusion, you can bet there will be plenty of costs to remove all the rotted wood and new windows. The interior damage may be sheetrock, carpets, insulation, and such. This is just materials. The mold inhaled from the moister or water damage is much worse than the cost to replace. This is why we sometimes, we have to decline some jobs as they are too far gone and need a general contractor and not a stucco contractor.🤔
@avisitorhere3 жыл бұрын
There are few places that really train installers now days. Contractors just throw unqualified workers on a job usually with bad results. With the ease of transitioning to other work, there just aren't a lot of people interested in doing the heavy, dangerous work of a window installer. IF there was training, better pay and benefits that might turn around but contracting is the wild west.

I flash the bottom with the bitumen/bitchethane. It's sticky. I will wrap up the sides 2 or 3 inches wrapping it into the sill. Then install the window the flash the sides with the same product then the top overlapping the 2 verticals that I just did. Kirk. Does the window frame touch bare wood or does the window sit on top of the paper? Another question. Is it the stucco guys responsibility to fix the paper? How far away from the window does the stucco need to be removed. I prefer to replace windows and have the stucco fixed versus using ugly ass retrofit windows.
@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Howdy Travis, it's a cardinal sin to place any flanged window directly on the wood. Whether it's plywood or, as in the old days, against the studs. A paper or a peel and stick membrane should be placed on first. Preferably at least 6 inches in width. How far to break out from the window depends on the condition of the paper and wire. The minimum is about at the very least four to six inches, as the new membrane has to overlap the existing paper, and the new stucco netting must also tie into the existing or crisscross it so there will be no perimeter crack.👍

I had to pull the wood trim from around my windows and found the guy just cut out the stucco a bit more than the nailing fin and shoved it in there. Miracle though he removed the lath but didn't damage the paper around or under the fin. Then, covered the fin with 1x2 then put wood trim over it and caulked around the top and sides. Looks like some water did get in at the bottom between the stucco and paper slightly but not in the house. Any suggestions on a fix, Kirk?

Hi Kirk, great videos! We have leaking windows in our 1992 built HOA, the originally installed over 30 years ago windows are of poor quality. Some of those original windows that had been leaking for over 20 years were replaced recently (retrofit windows, sliders and custom full frame radial windows) and continue to leak. There are suggestions to do destructive water test the windows and walls to find the sources of the leaks (the roof has been re-coverd this year with a new layer.). But many vendors suggest to caulk the windows and paint the stucco with elastomeric paint to avoid getting into potentially costly repairs if damage is discovered. Is that at all a sound, more affordable option to breaking the stucco and changing the paper/correcting installation mistakes? And if we do the destructive test is there a way to see from the inside if the windows were installed incorrectly or if the issue is deteriorated paper or both? Is providing proper flashing on a retrofit window a part of the job of the window installer?
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Good evening sounds like a mess there, retrofits are usually windows that just insert into the frame, then a polyurethane caulking is used to fuse the frames to the existing wood frame, It is easier to do than breaking out the stucco but is done for duel window purposes, not to stop leaking windows. It appears the paper is damaged which stops the water intrusion, you can temporarily fix this with Stucco-flexes, "Renew" paint, which usually gives roughly 15 years of waterproofing, the issue becomes, can you find a person to do it properly? To tear off all the stucco and start from scratch is the best advice, but most can't afford to do this. best wishes, 👨🏻🔬

I can’t say enough of the amount of homes that were built post 2k but once you chip out windows. The water proofing is fragile. We don’t install windows. We just fix them. One thing about houses in America is the flimsy quality of even the most expensive ones. Houses are built literally like a house of cards. Weak beams, plywood, flimsy insulation, flimsy siding and roofing that either blows off in high winds or just rots away after a few years. It's really no wonder that come tornado or hurricane season, houses are literally ripped off of their foundations and tossed into the air. why aren’t they built with brick like here in the uk.

Exactly,Italy, Germany Spain and Ireland are another good example for strong builded houses, more solid and better insulated then homes in Britain

Morning Steve, I have seen the home of the above quality and below. We get earthquakes here, but no hurricanes or tornados. If we did get a hurricane, no doubt this house would stay intact. I have applied for 30, and 50-year roofs before. Clay and concrete roof tiles can sustain winds in excess of 125 miles per hour that would strip off most other roofing materials. Me, I'm just a stucco dude. Not a builder of homes.

I've worked in construction for the last 40 years and unfortunately we have reached a point where nobody cares about the finished product......it's all smash and grab . That is partly because everyone wants the job done cheap .....no one wants to pay . Corners have to be cut for the guys to make their money .....not saying it's right , just an observation. I've priced work and the customer will say " Can you sharpen your pencil on this job " .....meaning can you do it cheap . I say if you want a good job you got to pay . I've got expensive taste .....I've got a big house with a flash car ....then there's the wife and mistress to keep ......I also like fine whiskey and expensive cigars lol
@crise69713 жыл бұрын
I get you right on the money! Cheap, fast. No quality control. I see it everyday in jobs. You should expect the best. And yeah expensive taste is where it's at. Just don't tell my girlfriend and my wife on the side.

Morning Gladiator Dude, too funny my friend. As a rule, I tell folks to get 3 other bids. This is because 95% trust us for quality, expertise in giving them what they need, and not trying to sell them things they don't need. Most of our clients can go to work and not worry if were cutting corners as to do that, we might end up having to go back but this time for free, can't have that. Besides, doing it right saves us time. Cheers, my fellow contractor.🍺

In LA and OCounty you need a permit to install new windows

I've been in the window business over twenty years in texas.. Most times we walk away from stucco jobs with window installs. The proper way to install windows in stucco Is not to cut apart all the stucco on the outside. The glass should be removed sashes.Meeting real but the frame should be left in the wall.. You then install a new window inside the old window frame with a stucco fin.. This way the stucco is not damaged.. The way you're doing it can be done but it's very very costly and more expensive..
@StuccoPlastering10 ай бұрын
No worries, we don't install windows, we lath and apply the stucco.
@glenwarren43514 ай бұрын
Love Texas but your dead wrong. Leaving the frame in was very popular when the replacements first came out Now you don't see them at all poor quality matinace such as caulking painting the caulk every few years especially on south facing wall been doing this 47 years

Morning, and here I thought this would be an easy day, after climbing a ladder for some of these windows and working off this slant roof all day, I was beat up after this long day. What you see on this roof was only half the work, We also plastered them on this day. The life of a plasterer.😏

@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Howdy Jim, sorry. I don't, however, I recommend you google “window companies” in your area. This may help you decide. This search may also bring up “yelp” Theirs is a paid subscription, so their reviews may be more biased than Google's; however, you can scroll and read through the Yelp reviews. Hopefully, with the help of both reviews apps, you will find the best fit for your needs. If you’re still unsure, ask to view their completed jobs or repairs and, if possible, speak directly with their past clients. 👨🏻🔬

People save up their hard earned cash to replace windows thinking it will save money but so many videos here on KZbin where they are just installed not to best practices Highly rated window company wanted to caulk my windows into place. Good morning Lisa, I have seen some quality window installations, but lately, both Jay and I have experienced poor window installations. Hopefully, it's just a coincidental thing. I tell folks these days I can't bid the stucco repair until I see what a window installer left me to work with. It's just. Lately, most have been poorly installed. That sounds negative, but it's a weird truth.🤔
