As a 60+ woman I have become increaingly respectful of my grandmothers routine. She always shmeared oil into her cuticles at night as well as used vasoline on her body after bathing. She lived to 102 and, as a very fair skinned person, had gorgeous skin until her passing. I have also noted that the dry patches on my body are significantly reduced when using vasoline at night. It is heartening to hear that science concurs with tradition

This method really helped me when I had very bad hand eczema while working in healthcare during Covid. Every time I had to use hand sanitizer, it was horribly painful. The dermatologist kept prescribing me steroids, and it would make it go away for a little while always to come back. Finally, I found one of the research articles online. It took about two weeks to fix but it definitely has not come back not an easy process, but brought me so much relief as I had been struggling with this for several months.

As a 59 year old postmenopausal female, I sleep in silk and on a silk pillowcase specifically because silk doesn't absorb what I've applied to my skin the way that cotton does. It acts more like cling wrap, but is comfortable to sleep in. One of the greatest benefits reaped so far is wrapping my smeared neck in a silk sleep mask. WOW! Unfortunately, silk is terribly expensive when compared to cotton. Thumbs up, Dr. Dray!

I have added a hard water filter to my shower, which made a big difference to my hair and scalp. The biggest difference for my skin overall was a phytoceramide supplement (wheat based).
@KittenBowl1 Жыл бұрын
I’ve used filters and definitely reduces irritation for those who have extreme dry sensitive skin. I’ve also used vitamin C shower where it release vitamin C and this I found it be more helpful as it neutralizes chlorine and for someone with eczema like myself and very dry skin I found this to be very helpful not to get irritated skin in winter time more than filter kind which tends to be expensive. I love steamer for face though. And we can’t forget humidifier for our skin in dry winter.

Funnily enough, it was Dr Dray who also suggested a much-less aggressive variation hereof: every time after I shower, I get out of the shower wet, slather on Cerave (which contains petrolatum), and let it dry. I get an incredible amount of compliments how supple and smooth my skin always feels!
@pearlspetals5542 Жыл бұрын

@@diannematthews7409 I’m a senior staff advisor at a university hospital, and I discussed this technique with a colleague - a dermatologist. He had never heard of this method (but in his defence, Cerave was introduced here fairly recently), but after trying, he’s a convert! I’ve suggested it to a number of people with various barrier issues and it works every time! (Especially if you also avoid fabric softeners). Furthermore, it saves a lot of time and laundry: all you need is an old t-shirt to wrap around your hair. I know it sounds odd but for some reason, the combination of water and Cerave dries within minutes: in fact I brush my teeth, and by the time I’m done, I’m dry.

I do this at least once a week in the evening and maybe again if I'm WFH or having a lazy weekend. I layer plain unscented petroleum jelly over my moisture (la roche posay eczema cream). I have to admit, doing the soak and smear method as a child was extreme uncomfortable. However, as an older adult battling uncontrolled eczema all over, simply patting dry after after a shower then smearing with white petroleum jelly has definitely made a difference. Similar story here. What are you using on your face? I'm still searching for what works. Thanks.
@KalisBunny Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. These are her recommendations from an older video, but I still like the products very much because my skin is both dry and it breaks out. So for washing I use the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser* and then I immediately go on with Deep Moisture hypoallergenic body lotion from Neutrogena** after the face dries almost completely. I live in a cold and dry climate so that my skin gets red and dry even if I wash every day in the winter, so I honestly wash my face every 48 hours or so until the skin calms down because I'm trying to introduce Differin gel as a retinol treatment every other day and there is also a video on how to apply that (you have to first put the lotion and even Aquaphor/vaseline on sensitive areas of the face) but I still get some redness around the eye area so I might switch out to pure vaseline and try that agin. In Europe you have to get a prescription for Differin but it's over-the-counter in some other countries. Hope this helps, check out her older videos for more detail. *INGR: Water, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Panthenol, Niacinamide, Pantolactone, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid **INGR: Aqua, Paraffinum Liquidum, Glycerin, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides, Cetyl Alcohol, Caprylyl Glycol, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Carbomer, Sodium Polyacrylate, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol. If you are acne prone you shouldn’t be following the advice specifically for dry skin people. In dermatology vaseline shouldn’t be used on people with acne prone and oily skin, it’s mostly likely going to worsen your condition. Cetaphil is for dry sensitive skin people and not for acne prone oily skinned people.
@KittenBowl1 Жыл бұрын
Btw, if you want blemish to be gone you should really avoid any petroleum based products including mineral oil and petrolatum (vaseline). It would clog pores. Instead you should use products that contain light oils or even oil free in summer especially. Light oils are jojoba oil, grape seed oil, evening primrose oil etc. Exception of jojoba, other oils are rich in linoleic and linolenic fatty acid that will give you a very light feeling on skin. And avoid mineral oil, vaseline, olive oil, squalene oil and coconut oil as these will clog your pores. These oils are great for dry skin people. You need to use different products for acne prone skin.

I couldn’t understand how he could tolerate this stuff on his body . It is very thick. He said “you don’t do it right. You should apply right after showing while your skin is still damp”. It was a game changer… this oil starts “melting” on your wet skin when you apply it. After I use towel to absorb extra. It doesn’t feel heavy, it even doesn’t feel that I have something on my skin. I get hot flashes in pajamas so I don't wear them. My face has one very dry spot and almost a pigment loss. Does not itch, but looks bad. I find myself still putting petroleum jelly on it during the day. It is like it my outer skin is trying to grow back almost like a scab. It is SO weird. My hands seem to grow these dry spots on them almost like warts. I smooth them off and I'm good. A Norwegian dermatologist professor recommended this method to my parents back in the early 90’ for my child atopic eczema. It was a little known method in Norway back then but my parents were desperate because of my severe eczema. He recommended to use cotton tube bandage on my arms, hands, legs and feet over the ointment at night. That way I could get a good night sleep. My skin today is for the most part healthy, but sometimes in the winter season I might get a flare up with small patches. I will use this method, but now with waterproof bandage in different sizes over the area to trap the moisture in. I find this method to healing my skin quicker too. This way I don’t need to use much cortisol ointment on my skin. And I will maintain my skin with urea cream afterwards. Recommended a cream called Canoderma 5% from ACO.

My mom did this to me as a kid. I have eczema, but I can deal with it on my body better than my hands and feet. I have the kind with the little tapioca bead blisters and it itches and hurts so bad! Well, my mom would “smear” my hands and feet and cover them up in white cotton socks before bed (yes, socks on my hands lol) I still do it myself as an adult and it helps so much. Thanks Dr. Dray for your dedication to this channel!!

I do this with lanolin. Something about the idea of petroleum turns me away. Lanolin fixes my skin like nothing else and I've always gotten free tubes.

Huge fan of doing this to the feet with plastic wrap- looks crazy but works great!

I do the soak but use Curel hydrotherapy. I have used I believe every lotion from the drugstore and Sephora and nothing moisturizes my dry skin like Curel. I also use Amlactin 12 percent lactic acid twice a week my skin has never been happier ☺️ I couldn't handle petroleum jelly. I can't believe I never hear anyone talk about Curel it's magical 🎉❤

Which one? They have a few different ones in the hydrotherapy kind. I don't like the original it contains orange oil

I remember when you first said to apply moisturizer on wet skin. I now shower and then apply lotion wet and it works amazingly. I do what you just described with my feet once s week but with shea butter lotion. Soak, smear and then insulate. Cosmetologist have recommended this for hands with warm lotion after soaking and cotton manicure gloves for decades so it makes sense.

This is perfect. I have vasoline and i will try. Thanks for the tips on how to take a bath so I don't keep damaging my skin. I will lower the temp of water and shorter and take out the body wash stuff. No wonder why my skin is dry because I have the water to hot, and stay to long in the bath, and put all kinds of wash and soaps in the water. Ok... time to change it to get my skin back in shape. Thank you Dr. Dray.

I used to work a Dairy Queen drive thru in the mid-west winter. My hands were so chapped from sticking moist hands out the drive thru window in the winter cold. Vaseline plus socks on my hands every night was the key to healing.

Thank you Dr Dray. This is my routine 2-3 times a week after warm long shower with thick CeraVe. With my Sjögren’s and living in cold climate it’s double whammy for me. I call this routine “ Basting a turkey “. Petroleum jelly will save me some money. I already switched to petroleum jelly lip moisturizing instead of chopsticks after your prior info videos. Thank you again.

I've used 1% retinol around my eyes, which has given me creppy skin. Been using Vasaline for days to recover. It's helping.

I used your advice about a cool mist humidifier, which helps. This winter season I'm using Cerave Body cream on my upper body and Cerave Healing ointment on my legs. With the retinol and glycolic acid I use on my face; my face (mostly my forehead)) became so itchy that I couldn't stop scratching. So I stopped that routine on my face for now and am using Good Molecules B5 serum followed by Avene XeraCera AD. So for 2 nights and days it lessen the itch. I will continue this on my face until the itch completely stops.

My regular moisturizer method is a little like this. I pat dry after showering and then rub jojoba oil all over my skin. It seems to last a lot longer than lotion or creams. Plus it's a lot faster!

Feel so justified that I don't need to soap up my arms and legs. I was hoping more for advice for face, but definitely using this method for my feet, they're so dried and cracked right now. 😢

I am miserable and found some of your other videos to be very helpful. My PCP was of no help. 2 different antibiotics. Neither worked. Went to 2 different dermatologists. Both have a different antibiotic for staph. 1 said eczema the other said psoriasis not sure anyone really knew. Expensive ointments burned. Skin came off one leg. I've been showering and smearing. Gonna try soaking and smearing with fewer soap washes. Bandages on leg to keep stuff out and less irritation from clothing. Skin appeared to mold at one point under bandages 😮 😢

Thanks Dr. Dray. Please discuss how to treat a sudden tiny painful tear under the pinky toe. What are the causes? What are some drugstore remedies? The internet “advice” is confusing.

QV is an Australian pharmacy brand for dry sensitive skin, seems to be the darling of derms and pharmacists here in Australia

*Hard Water* . Thank you so much for including this factor. I'm over 50, I get a great laugh from George Carlin's bit on "armpits, ass, crotch and teeth". As an eczema prone person, I love moisturizer's with actives for my legs and arms.

I installed a hard water filter in my shower, which has made a big improvement in my hair and scalp. Our hard water is so bad that I have to change the filter cartridge monthly.
