(The grease is a good idea. In fact they come factory greased. If you see no grease in yours it is because it is dryed out and that is one add on to the problem. If your sponge is too dryed out, it canot be saved. In fact the sponge will split once you slice it. It will just crack. The grease keeps the sponge from drying out and cracking. The grease also helps the tension to be smooth and keeps the sliding from jerking or hanging up. Therefore you put grease throughout the foam.
The foam as a whole does not move on the rod but stays in the housing/cradle. Just where the rubber goes is where the sliding happens; of course.
Also if the cap somewhat does not seem to snap back in place tightly. Don't worry about that part. The cap will stay put by the weight of the tub.
I will also make a video how to fix the struts on front load washing machines.....look for it..

The moment I saw your hands I knew you had a solution to the problem we all face in the service field You gotta know I’m gonna try this out looks like transmission coolant hose your using There are different types or thickness of rubber too that can be experimented with but clearly the grease is also vital to slow the dampening which is the problem, not the springs!! Thank you good sir, I hope it works

Did you put the zip tie pieces in the inside of the foam or outside? I am wondering if this fix would work just as good or maybe better/longer if the pieces were stuffed between the foam and the foam housing instead if between the foam and the rod itself. For one thing, it seems it would exert less wear in the piece of zip tie.

You're the first person who explained what the real problem was. The felt was not providing enough friction to resist the bouncing. I used a peice of rubber hose first, 3/8" long, 3/16" I.D. then the original felt then Squeezed the cover back down. Reinstalled rods. Spins quiet now. I'm thinking the weight of the loaded tub puts added pressure on the felt squeezing it against the shaft and reducing the bouncing. Thanks for the tip.

hi, great video, after seeing this I held off buying a new set of suspension rods. I left the old ones in and used BELT GRIP from crc products. Sprayed onto the rods where they go into the spring with a full load in the washer to get maximum spring compression and exposing as much rod as possible. Works a treat, the friction from the belt grip is perfect and i expect to get a lot of extra use out of the rods. Thanks for the idea.

Bravo! If the tools you use depend on use consumable parts made of plastic and rubber, learning how they work and how to repair/replace them is *essential.* I'm very happy to see this investigation and report on how simple these stupid suspension rods are. If I had a parts store in my town with stock in these parts, this fix might not be worthwhile. But since it takes a week minimum to get parts (and sometimes two weeks) this kind of fix is a lifesaver. (My wife will just persuade me to buy a new $500 washer if I can't fix this one for two weeks... My plan is to save up all the money I save with these fixes and buy a Speed Queen.)

I did close to the same thing, just pulled the foam out and wrapped tape around it to increase friction. I think this method is better. Once the foam starts to wear, sometimes it is also dry and gets crispy, which causes it to wear faster: repair lasted about six months. That little piece of rubber is a good replacement.

I installed an inexpensive replacement set purchased on Ebay - they were worse then the originals. I put zip ties around the top of the white cap on the originals- pulled them as tight as i could get them, reinstalled them and it has been a year , so far so good . Anyone that is looking for a new washer, I'm not sure what to buy other then Speed Queen (but most of us can't afford them) - but one thing for certain - avoid Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Roper and any other brand made by Whirlpool . Evidently this gentlemen's fix must work based on the comments . But it doesn't make sense to me - he adds a piece of rubber to ADD friction to the up and down movement i guess and then he adds grease which should REDUCE the friction

The problem is that cotton bushing wears down and allows the spring to slide freely. It needs to have friction to slow the bounce down.

After over a month or two of hand washing my cloths while waiting for parts that I ordered to arrive I finally got around to this fix. First I had the banging and the grinding noises. So I eventually replaced the actuator and I nearly ordered a new trans too. But I cancelled that. I think that swapping out that actuator helped with the grinding noises but I am not certain, no matter because it was still banging like hell anyways. So I looked into doing this fix but when I first set out to do it the shock I removed didn't seem to be the issue in my opinion. Besides that it took a great deal of physical strength to pull out the dampening rod if you don't know the trick. The trick is vise grips. I had also heard about that metal drive block replacement for the plastic one which seemed to be a sure fire solution. So I decided to order the block and the special tool needed for the installation of it. The block never came and then all others were on back order for 3 weeks at least. In the mean time I had other things to do in the yard but still I fumbled around with a few more Ideas I had until finally the drive block arrived. By this time I had become and Maytag dismantle expert. I even got my machine fixed . It only ran okay for about 3 loads of wash. Much needed loads and then it returned to banging like hell again. I got a little discouraged and with the summer nearing its end I was most preoccupied wrapping up my outdoor projects ahead of the incoming cold weather Still I had resolved that I was going to try this one last fix before throwing in the towel. I had truIy lost all motivation, especially since I already STILL have another washer on order and everything. I ordered The GE One and Done from WayFair but it went on back order until Nov 13th an extra month BLOODY HELL! Clothes are stackedup and backed up in laundry baskets. My family has turned on me. Its a nightmare. I caught a break in my schedule and forced myself to try this one last fix, all the while it didn't seem like it was going to work. But I did it and then ran my washer though manual tests mode. It ran good with no banging. Picture me doing the Pee Wee Herman in the Risky Business hall way wearing tighty whities. I am so happy and greatful to you for this video. Now I am going to run this baby all night long and well into next week catching up on all these dirty cloths. Thank God! I was about to have to walk the plank.

The clamps, the zip ties, the silicon, the liquid nail, the various glues, the shaft collars, the styrofoams, the garden hoses... are all temporary losing solutions. . You are not told that truth. This is a simple real actual solution you can take to the bank. All you have to do is to simply contemplate and see this in your mind's eye. It speaks for itself. And no... DO NOT USE RUBBER CORDS IN PLACE OF THE HIGH DENSITY FOAM THERE IS A REASON THEY IMPLEMENTED SPECIFIC DENSITY FOAM FOR THIS. Actual rubber cord will hold too tight and you will hear serious banging and in worse situation your washer might even walk over the floor. when spin time comes. Low density will not hold tight enough. Now I covered all of the nonsense. Unless you care to come up with another one. 🙂 I have repaired lots of washers throughout the years. Not one single problem, anywhere. This not some throw away experiment wondering if it works or not and or for how long. It would take hardly a minute to get each rod done. The actual work. Making the video takes time because of all the explanation and so on. Read the description for other details.

Wonder how long this will last. Seems like a thin spacer around the outside of foam might last longer. That and dampening grease. Maybe very fine wire wrapped around the foam or pieces of aluminum trim place around the OUTSIDE of the foam to tighten it to the rod. If what I am trying to plain would work, it would force the foam around the rod equally all the way around providing basically the same wear for the complete interior of the foam without having to cut it and causing uneven wear with something inside the foam. Just a thought. Something I might try.

They don't come with grease on them and your fix may work but if your trying to use friction with the pieces of rubber why would you put grease. That yellowish stuff is a sticky substance that works it way out of the inside and dry's up. If you use the substance out of the rodent and insect glue traps. its messy and there's a little trick to it but its the best thing i have found. Also if you grease the top of that piece that the machine rest on and also the cup that it rest on at the top in the plastic cup and put the centering springs on that the manufacture's decided they needed. I actually put 4 on not 2 and I make my own that have a lot more resistance to them than the factory ones.

You are conflating vertical friction component with tension needed on the horizontal axis. One you want and the other you want to dissipate. Vertical friction causes binding incongruent movement which you want to control creating smooth reciprocating action. No different than reciprocating piston in your engine. It is the exact same principle of forces in action and the thermodynamics involved. ( I did not want to get technical but you left me no choice. And I still have to only assume you got it.) Most of my videos are concerned with bigger fish to fry.

I’m going to try. But I’m wondering how many kids you’ve got if your rubbers keep coming off. Lol.

YT Thunderwolf712 I just tried this today, March 14, as the last option before giving up, but I should have really done this first before anything else! I’m going to be testing it more through these days, but so far I think and confirm that it works! If anything bad happens while testing, I’ll comeback and leave another comment. If nothing bad happens, it will just be this one. Thanks for this amazing video!

You really didn’t have to cut the center out. You could have done the same thing without cutting. I put a piece of a Ty-wrap instead of rubber hose, then squeezed in grease. It all works

What does this accomplish exactly, is it compressing the spring?

No, gripping the rod better to dampen the motion. It only needs to grip for a moment.
