I got my sn95 98’ mustang gt in my garage. I’m in L.A. California . I drive my mustang once a week or once every 2 weeks. Unfortunatly it’s a shared garage, and I have a stale mate nieghbor who dented the door once approx 8” dent. I was able to have it removed by a paint-less dent repair man. I build a divider out of white plastic conduit, and pool noodles but now my nieghbor knocks down the divider, Any suggestion. Please help

Thanks for sharing this great information! I’ve never lived where it gets cold in the winter, but there still were tips for everyone in this video. It’s important to check for water in your brake fluid, check the coolant ratio in your radiator and it’s important to make sure that your battery stays fully charged and that is doesn’t discharge in a short period of time.

100% exactly what I have been doing for my 1996 Mustang GT. I was hoping I would see something new. I however do recommend starting the car once every 3 months. But NOT for just 15 min. I run mine for at least 30min with multiple revs throughout that time. I don't shut it down till it gets up to normal running temp. (Basically make sure you run it till the thermostat fully opens.) I also like to run the AC to allow the lubricant in the AC system to circulate. (25 years 143431 miles and I had the AC system checked for the first time ever and it was only about pound low with zero leaks!)

Pointless. The most wear and tear incurs during cold stars, so you're putting your engine through its worst once every 3 months when you don't need to. Idling to warm up is also the worst way to warm up, your engine stays cold longer than driving it slow and smooth to bring up the temps faster, and your multiple revs is again doing nothing, worst case you're revving a cold engine, and during an idling cold engine you get gas blow by into the engine oil contaminating it, and potentially washing off any lubricating oils on the cylinder walls, so you're more likely to be scraping the walls. Best practice is to just leave it for the whole storage, unless it's actually physically driving to warm up.

@@gwot To be honest once my regiment fails me and something bad happens I will gladly change it. But 146,000 miles and it runs just like the day I bought it. It doesn't burn or leak oil or any other fluids. My 1996 Mustang GT is the exact reason why I only buy Fords now.

Great tips on storing the car. I also have a Mustang but don't do all that. I do cover it inside. I change the oil every 5 k miles regardless of how long it sit over the winter. Never used Stabil in the gas and it starts right up in the spring then burn of the old gas and refill with fresh. I agree on the brake fluid but so far i don't have any problems with that. It's been flushed out a couple of years ago. I do use a battery tender as my battery is approaching 10 years . That's my story. I've own my 88 Stang since Feb 2nd 1993. 237k miles and still running strong. I'm the Great lakes state.

brake fluid doesn't develop moisture, it sucks moisture out of the air. and it should be flushed every 2 years maximum. If you do your regular flush maintenance, there shouldn't be any issues.

I use both, battery tender plug in and if their is no access to electric I use solar battery tender at least a 30w+ they work great. I put dryer sheets around the engine and all around the interior/trunk for piece of mind (if anything smells fresh) and bait outside the car if I use the portable garage. Some of the bait always gets eaten. I used red stabyl and now they have blue stabyl that boater friends *say* is better. Keep up to great videos. 👍

Very handy tips as I am about to enter initial active duty training for the US Air Force for 6 months. My car is an old dinosaur so i’ll put in full fuel and stabilizer. Car will be stored in home garage, location for privacy purposes is mild climate all year round with rainy seasons towards the winter months. Brake fluid was replaced less than a year ago as i did it at my job as a dealership technician. Depending how expensive Battery Tender is, i’ll opt to disconnect the battery.

We have a jeep that we store over the winter. To keep animals out we usually put Irish Spring bar soap chucks in the interior and exhaust tube to try and keep them out. Great video!

I have to store my Mustang off-site, with no access until spring. The facility does have rodent control, but things and mice happen. I use small mason jars with fabric stretched over the mouth. Inside I place gauze soaked in peppermint oil and eucalyptus, and leave one in the trunk, one inside and two under the hood. I figure it is extra insurance, and research has shown that mice avoid these smells. The downside is that in the spring, it smells like mint and eucalyptus, but mouse urine would be a bit worse.

One tip I found is buy a 50 sheet pack of dry sheets Gian. And put all 50 threw out the trunk inside and hood. Makes it smell good and keeps mise away.

Good advice on the biggies - full tank, fuel stabilizer, battery tender, avoiding car cover, etc. Many folks do have challenges with rodents, so advice is sorely needed, but since it isn't an issue for you, understood that you don't have much to say there. TIRE: I noticed you said "just inflate tires and make sure no leaks" -- what is you opinion on overinflating 5-7 psi beyond recommended to avoid possibly deformation due to flat contact patch? Glad to hear this is not an issue or a concern (likewise, it sounds like there is also no need to move the car to forward/back to change contact patch). Gaskets: My other area of concern has been drying out of gaskets and rubber components due to lack of use. Have you encountered any issues in that area over the years from letting a car site over the winter? Brakes: Also, I assume you park it without the parking brake set -- to reduce the likelihood of binding pads/rotors, shoes/drums? I don't think putting some extra air in the tires would hurt anything as long as you don't go over the max pressure written on the side wall. This car for example requires 32psi the tire's side wall says it will handle 44 psi. If you drove around at the tire's max pressure the ride would be very harsh. Always follow the pressure recommended by the vehicle when using the vehicle. Gaskets don't dry out over 6 months. Maybe if the vehicle was stored for 6 years you would have issues. I've never had a problem storing over a winter. Correct about the parking brake. This car is a manual so I just put it in gear. Automatic, just put it in park and don't set the parking brake.

Can confirm that the batteries in the mustangs just last forever. I have a 03 V6 and just de-wintered it. Think its happy to stop being winterized. Checked fluids and low on PS (already knew it had a leak) and a bit on trans (old car stuff) but otherwise loves life. Breaks work fully and its ready to rip everywhere. Its a well treated beater.

I think better to run the vehicle periodically throughout the winter. That will help to keep upper engine coated with oil. Run it long enough to get it up to an operating temp. This will help to burn off any condensation in and around engine. I typically like to do this on a sunny and dry day. If it’s perfectly dry and sunny, it doesn’t hurt to drive it a little, work the brakes to clean off rotors, etc.

Idling the engine won't build enough heat in the oil to boil off the condensation. I don't think you will do any harm by running it but my Mustang will actually have condensation form under the oil cap over the winter. It will not disappear until I spend 10 minutes or so on the highway.

If it doesn't rain the next day, all that salt becomes airborne mist which settles onto the paint, blows into shut lines, wheel wells, and the engine compartment. This was the reason why I thought a car cover was the answer, but now I hear it isn't. I have the exact cover he showed the label for. I don't recall if it soaked through after a while. I need to test that. I even check out the Car bubbles, but then someone said he got condensation inside on the body, and mold in the interior. OMG, it makes me want to not replace my current vehicle.

@@ronalddean3630 Yup, I just leave mine in the garage at a certain point in the fall...lately even into December before it snows. Then I make sure it is clean, put it on a battery tender in the garage, and cry all winter because I miss driving it. It will help it last, but rust is an evil that cannot be avoided unless you have climate controlled room and coat it in oil...lol It really is a toy that I only drive on sunny dry days which really helps it keep looking like new underneath. Most I worry about is rodents that get into the garage. No signs in 4 years of them getting into the car or engine bay, but I've caught many in traps. I think one chipmunk chewed my 02 censor on the car that sits outside (daily driver) and cost me $700. JERK!

I use the cheap plastic car covers from Griots Garage. They cost about $15, and I use a new one each year. I have a 5 year old Honda that is only driven once a month. It stays highly detailed, covered, and on a Battery Tender year round. I drive something else as my daily. BTW, the car is a 2016 with a little over 3000 miles on it. Definitely agree with everything ESPECIALLY the alcohol free fuel suggestion. That's all that I've ever put in the car since it's mostly stored.

Eventually, whatever the treatment is wears off and the water no longer beads and rolls off. I need to test that on the cover I have. I checked out the Car bubbles this morning linking from a Forum thread. It looked interesting (several models to choose from), and that took me to a YT review on the co. It was a good review, but then someone responded and said he ordered the the version from a UK distributer. At the end of the storage period, he was horrified to find condensation inside on the body, and mold in the interior. OMG, it makes me want to not replace my current vehicle at all. Maybe because it is much wetter for longer times in that part of the world, I don't know. Someone also mentioned the "moisture buckets" are good use to collect any unwanted moisture. I wonder if there will something wrong with that as well. The car I have now is a daily driver, but my intention for the next one is infrequent use only. I can't leave it outside exposed to the elements, else I will find myself in the same situation 10 years from now with rarer car. Sigh, I don't know what to do at this point. I guess I'll keep researching for the solution to NOT having a garage.

Tire pressure should be set to max sidewall pressure for storage. This is something dealerships do for all vehicles before they are sold to prevent the tires from developing flat spots.

I've worked for 6 dealerships, none of them do that, ain't nobody got time to be doing that. As he said in the video, new cars with radial tires don't flat spot, if they do, it'll round out in a few km drive.

Rodents like warm places, so what I do is leave the hood open with a 1-2 inch rod. If you don’t have a battery tender then disconnect the cables from the battery, I do this all the time and have had my batteries last for years. If you want something to repel water from the car while it’s outside then I’d suggest a trap and bungees, but of course don’t use this method if your car has a nice paint job. Use this method if you want to prevent water from getting pasted those old worn out seals and into the interior of your vehicle which then causes standing water to rust out your floor and cause mold to the interior fabrics.

If you’re storing the car at an indoor location that is fully heated basically to a constant 20 degrees celsius the whole time I guess there would be no issues with changing the oil ahead of storage? My car was brand new and I didn’t want to store it with the break-in oil in there so I changed it before storage. My plan was to just use the oil in the spring without another oil change. Now you have me wondering. Also, do you make sure your parking brake is disengaged? You do anything concerning AC? I read something about storage being less than ideal for the AC system. Like you, I don’t really like the idea of starting the car over the storage period, so I don’t know if there is much that can be done. Interesting to hear you say that you just start the car up at the end of storage. I’ve read something about perhaps trying to cut the fuel pump and turn the engine over a bit without actually starting the car to move a bit of oil around. Others I’ve seen remove spark plugs and put oil in before starting. That seems like butt pain, but I was thinking perhaps trying at least cutting the fuel pump by pulling the fuse for it and turning it over a bit before start. Nice car and nice video.

Used a battery (brand new battery) maintainer for my garage kept mustang. Went about a year with no road miles. Just pulled out of the garage from time to time for washing in the driveway. As soon as I put it on the road to go to machanic, after the third or forth start the battery went dead. Called the auto parts store and was told that even on a maintainer the car still needs to be driven a couple times a month. Now I need a new battery; again.

I deflate the tires a bit actually.. not too much to where it’s sitting on a rim but just a bit so it’s not totally full.. if you do this and put a bit of tire lubricant on them you’re rubber isn’t gonna crack and will last those 40-60k you hope for. Better yet.. to prevent bald spots on the tires you can put the car on 4 jacks and let the car sit in the air but if it’s just 6 months (not anything over a year) you’re fine.

absolutely HATE the saying "I've never had an issue", or "I've been doing this for a long time so I know", or "I speak from experience". There is some merit to that, but it does not become fact. My co-worker has been storing his 70s Camaro for over 40 years every winter, first half of that is outside under a really thick and heavy cover that seals to the ground that wind can't flap, most of the winter the whole car's covered in snow anyway. He's always run the tank empty and stores it empty with fuel stabilizer for whatever's left in the system and till this day he's "never had an issue". When he brings it out he fills it with premium gas and that dilutes whatever little old gas that's left and it gets burnt off quickly, so you're not left with a full tank of potentially bad gas, which no fuel stabilizer can guarantee gas from not going bad. But I think either way works unless you're storing it by a body of water. So your first year of storage, that's 3 years after owning it, I bet you didn't flush the brake fluid at all since, brake fluids are supposed to be flushed every 2 at most, and if you've flushed it before, I highly doubt it's because of moisture in the brake lines to seize your calipers. Basically, if you've done your basic maintenance, brake fluid moisture isn't an issue. Used oil is acidic, THAT'S the reason why you change out for fresh engine oil. That being said, my Camaro co-worker also leaves old oil and change it first thing before bringing it out, but he also only puts a few hundred km on it since he only drives it when it's sunny and the road is free of moisture since the last rain. Your choice if you want to keep acidic oil over the winter in the engine. I personally buy the cheapest synthetic oil (about $20) I can find and change it as my "storage oil", let it run a bit to "wash" the engine and dilute whatever old oil is left so it's sitting in pretty much clean oil, then change to good oil and filter before bringing it out.

So, your co-worker does things differently than me... That doesn't make either one of us wrong. We are in different situations. I need to move my car throughout the winter to use my lift. Also, there is no maintenance schedule from Ford for changing brake fluid on a 2001 Mustang. Having owned the car and the original owners manuals for 15 years this spring, I speak from experience. The stock calipers on this generation of car are notorious for seizing pistons. Caliper body is aluminum, piston is steel. Add some moisture and they will corrode in place. Thanks for watching.

No brake fluid maintenance schedule from Ford? that's dirty on their part. Brake fluid has a maximum open bottle shelf life of 2 years. But to get enough moisture in the fluid to corrode in just a few years? that's just really bad steel from Ford. My Calipers are aluminum bolted on the outside with steel bolts, they're known to strip, but "in my experience" after 7 salty winters for my first brake job, they came out like new. See how personal experience speaks so little?

Your cheapest option would be to turn the headlights off at the knob. There are kits out on the market that will move the DRL's from the headlights to the turn signals and the kit's I've seen to do this are $280. I've never researched how to disable it completely because I never really cared about it to be honest.

I run ethanol fuel in my car until I'm about to store it for the Winter months. I then run that fuel down to nothing and fill up with NON ethanol fuel. Yes, it is a bit more expensive, although, NO additives are needed and it will store for years. Start ups are guaranteed no problem! Even works on lawn mowers etc........

I use the cheap plastic car covers from Griots Garage. They cost about $15, and I use a new one each year. I have a 5 year old Honda that is only driven once a month. It stays highly detailed, covered, and on a Battery Tender year round. I drive something else as my daily. BTW, the car is a 2016 with a little over 3000 miles on it. Definitely agree with everything ESPECIALLY the alcohol free fuel suggestion. That's all that I've ever put in the car since it's mostly stored.
