You did a great job on this tool, and what I love most is that you did not 'over restore' it. You left the character on it ! Those vintage tools once had not been delivered in a mirror shine. Now the wrench is in decent condition again showing his age and history, thanks to you. Thank you, too...

Thank you for the kind comments and thank you for visiting the channel. I prefer leaving the imperfections if they remind me of what the tool has gone through over the last century. I just try to make them work again. Cheers!

Maybe so. The manufacturer went on to redesign this for the automotive industry when bikes became less popular. Thanks for visiting the channel and for the nice comments. Cheers!

It is good to see someone who “feels” the metal and has the patience to gently ease a toll back to life. Far too many “restorers” get the biggest hammer they can find and an angle grinder to butcher the metal. Well done… subscribed 👍

Thank you for the nice comment! I believe in restoring a tool to working order and keeping the imperfections that time has given it, especially for one this old. Thanks for visiting the channel and I'll see you in the next one. Cheers!

Thank you. It was not easy separating the jaw from the handle. Zinc is my go-to solution now for corrosion protection. Cheers!

3/11/2022 What we have here, as I was taught, is an ADJUSTABLE SPANNER wrench, also known as a MONKEY wrench. Real bicycle wrenches are quite different, as I remember. They were the first adjustable wrench with any real success. They were very versatile due to their narrow profile and ease of use both left or right handed. Size was determined by the over all length of the fixed portion, such as 6 inch. The largest I've ever seen is 10 inch. This is not what is called a crescent wrench, just like channel lock pliers is a brand name, the they are really WATER PUMP pliers, YA Right. The drawback to these tools was that they would slip easily, so should not be used to tighten the fastener, if possible. (all this are lessons from my "basic use of hand tools" class in the Navy, in the 1960's) Real nice effort. ;-)

Thanks! Those are interesting facts you shared. The patent for this wrench refers to it as both a nut wrench and a monkey wrench for light duty ops, using a bicycle as an example. While researching it, I found that it was definitely marketed as a bicycle wrench early on but then was included in automotive tool kits when that industry launched. You wrote about it being used both left and right handed...the patent interestingly describes how to use it by grabbing it with the right hand specifically and turning the knurl with the left. Weird, right? This wrench is cool but not very practical. Thanks again for the comment! I am happy you are enjoying the projects.

@@Restorology Great response, it is interesting that your research confirms what both of us were saying. I have a funny story concerning me and these wrenches, it would take to much space to tell it. I have often wondered where it got the name MONKEY wrench, unless it's because you have to MONKEY with it to make it work. ;-)

Pounding out the rivet to release the knurled knob would’ve given you the ability to do a better restoration on the knurled with a small, fine-edged file. And, I would’ve done a better job in sanding to remove more of the pitted metal. But good work on releasing that jaw and knurled thumb screw!
@Restorology
@Restorology 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! At one point I was not sure I was going to be able to free the jaw. The video only gives a short look at the work that went into that. I thought about removing the rivet but decided that since I had the screw moving and it was knurled enough to use it, any further work would be overkill to make a usable tool. I could not sand the pitted metal any further because it would have burned through the manufacturer's mark and lettering on the handle and I actually like a tool this old to have a little character. Thanks for the feedback! 🍻

Nice job. I think with more polishing/sanding or painting you had better result.👏

You are correct, it definitely would have looked good with more sanding and polishing but on some items I like leaving imperfections because it reminds me of what the piece had to go through over the last century. On this one though I would have risked damaging the manufacturer's mark if I sanded enough to remove the pitting from rust. Thanks for watching and commenting!! Cheers!

The nut on the bike as no rust on and its said its not moved in 15 years ha ha ha unbelievable 😆
@Restorology

I guess the nuts are zinc plated and the bike has been stored in a dry garage since 2007 so I wouldn't expect much rust but thank you for watching all of the way through to observe that part of the video. Come back to visit soon, that bike will be a future restoration project and you will be able to see the parts in more detail. Cheers!

@Restorology
@Restorology 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. It definitely would have looked nice all shiny but I would have burned through the manufacturer's mark and the patent date stamps if I sanded enough to remove all the pitting. The pitting was pretty deep. Besides, I think the pits are part of its character now. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
