Protip: You might be able to shine a light on the monitor and see the outline of whatever it's supposed to display (works best with text) even if the backlight is broken. If _that_ shows weird shapes, it might not only be the backlight that's broken 😳
@acumenium8157
@acumenium8157 2 жыл бұрын
Neither part of this is a guarantee for all LCD screens. Sometimes a screen will refuse to display anything if the backlight doesn't work. The Nintendo Switch is like this. Sometimes the display itself breaking will interfere with the backlight---I believe this is also on the Switch, where if any part of the display stops working, the backlight does too. Some laptops will also be similar. You did give good advice, but LCDs are really annoying as there is absolutely no standard amongst them on how they work or how they fail.

I mean, I "fixed" a Wii with a dead disk drive by just installing the Homebrew mod, so games can run from SD or USB drive. Depending on what you need to fix you might not even need a soldering iron. In the same way installing a SSD in an old laptop or desktop can give it a lot of new life, even moreso with a lightweight version of Linux installed instead of Windows, and Linux is quite easy to use in many ways now and will regularly run magnitudes faster than Windows on the same hardware. So yeah, start with "fixes" that you can understand and manage and scale up where you can!

I've "repaired" two monitors by replacing the power boards entirely. Usually they cost around 30 USD. It's more wasteful and not as cool, but I have two 1080p lcd monitors that cost me 60 dollars in total. I just don't have the soldering and diagnostics skills for a more advanced repair.

Always, always, always make sure you discharge your capacitors before meddling with them. Even if the machine has been offline for quite some time, the capacitors can still be charged. Sometimes they, especially those used in the rectification, can store a lot of energy.

Electrolytic Capacitors have a Polarity the stripe side mostly with a dash - is negative also the side also with the shorter lead. The board usually has the polarity stenciled on the board. This one has a dash - negative. On higher voltage boards if you have the wrong polarity they will blow with a hiss and release a smelly smoke. Just to help out and it may have already been mentioned in the comments.

3:40 - I had repaired an acer monitor one time and the board was clicked in the same way as this board. This actually is because this prevents the board from popping out of the metal case. At that time the power supply port was ditched in and the board got stuck because the tape on the metal case was not tight enough. After 2 hours I got it to work again!

I have a similar problem with a tv that has it's screen turn on sometimes, sometimes not, will have to give the capacitors a check
@andrewhannay750
@andrewhannay750 2 жыл бұрын
Whilst capacitors in that era suffered badly, the light source of the time was often a cold cathode tube (It is in this monitor model), which would degrade over time. They have a small amount of mercury which is vapourised, and conducts electricty. After much use, some of the mercury binds to the glass and less is available to vapourise. This in turn pushes the power board harder, and puts it under more stress with also reduced light output. Eventually the power board will cut out, as the power required is undeliverable, or it would fail. Replacing the cold cathode tube(s) at the same time is also a good idea, which also increases brightness, plus the capacitors, whilst are better nowadays, are still under stress. I've done this before, however they do contain mercury, and are highly fragile. I've not done this for many years as modern screens are mercury free, but hope this explains what's going on too.
