to fit the rod in place inside the window UNDO the thread all the way up with pliers so its hard to do back up, then insert in the hole and twist with Pliers, that rod will click and after just do the thread back up to required lenth

Is there a video showing how to take one out (in situ)? The windows i have aer 17 years old and fitted with rods. How do i take the rods out so i can replace the broken gearbox?

Hi it is usual to find that this lock has the shoot-bolts fitted in the euro-groove If you look at the lock again if this is the case you will find 2 plastic inserts pushed into the groove to cover the bolts aesthetically & if so will pull out of the groove thus exposing the bolts. Regards Allan

This doesn't really show you how to fit/remove the rods. I did it by removing the rod retaining plates at the top & bottom of the window then unscrewing them fully until they "unclick" from the bayonet fitting in the Saracen gearbox. Once the new gearbox has been fitted, refitting the rods is achieved by unscrewing the rods to full extent until they are slightly tight. Tight enough to have enough tension as to not to unscrew when twisting them back into the gearbox bayonet lock position. If your window is stuck in the lock position remove the handle in the open position and gently apply some force to the window whilst easing the gearbox up and down in the frame with a screwdriver until the window pops open. You then screw the rods in until they reach the required length and refit the top & bottom plates. Careful not to fall out the window when applying pressure!😜. Hope this helps.

How does one grip the deadbolts in order to turn the bayonet? I can't see any way to grip them because they are so deep inside the frame. Is a special tool required?

Purely as a DIYer, it seems to me that the rod is in two parts but cannot be unscrewed (lengthened) completely so if you extend to the maximum length and then give an extra twist to tighten it, it should be stiff enough to insert and lock before it begins to screw shorter. Try doing it before you fit the lock for some practice first. The angled windown bracket has a hole with flat sides to match the flat sides of the locking end of the rod so the rod must be in the correct rotational position to refit the bracket afterwards. The bracket stops the rod turning shorter or longer.

+Joe Hi Guys Mike is correct in his comments I believe you need to fully extend the threaded bar until it firmly locks out (cant go any further out) then do the push and twist into the gearbox this should then do that before it begins to windback in. Then you obviously need to wind the thread back in to suit the window size. All a bit fiddly but Saracen always assumed this would be done on the fabricators bench and not as a retro fit repair. My question is how do you open the window if the gear mechanism has failed and wont lift up the bottom rod / dead bolt?

Me too... seems the only way is to use a thin metal rod, with a 90 degree bend (like an allen key) and some grips. There are some videos about that show it being used to slip into the frame, and manually actuating on the rollers. You may need to release the glass to make the frame pliable enough.

Can anyone help? I have a Saracen gearbox and the bottom push rod won't retract or extend when operating the window.

I have the same problem, did you fix yours? The only thing I can think of is to take the window out of the frame (Not Sure how hard that is), then drill some holes in the UPVC frame and move them manually. Today I tried Opening and shutting and thumping the frame in the hope that they would just rattle along, no joy!

@@SC-vi4xi Hi, I got further with it but didn't find a solution. It turns out there are two different types of these: one has a bayonet fitting which you can twists into the gearbox; the other is a kind of compression fitting. My old broken ones were compression fit which aren't available anymore. I fitted the new bayonet gearbox but I get get the bayonet shoot bolts in because as you twist them, all it does is extend or shorten the bolts. As the gearbox is in the frame, I can't get my fingers near to it to twist them in. I don't think design lends itself well to begin replaced - only to be serviced on a workbench etc with the whole frame in pieces which is beyond me, so I'm just going to look to replace the whole window as the glazing has failed anyway. Sorry this probably isn't much help - hope you find a solution!

Open sash Hi labour of love unfortunately You need to get a flat scraper or such between the sash and frame and try to knock the lock cams out of the keep if you can get to one of them not necessarily the jammed one you might find it also drives that But the trick is slowly and gently so as not to over stress the sash and crack it You may need to de-glaze the window to get more movement and also not crack the glass

Hi Thanks for the reply on the old video. A guy came to fix it for 80 quid and did it in seconds but did see how he did it or what tools he used. I will try it next time myself as two have gone now.
