I've been in the same boat for some years and it's time to fix this thing. Lots of good info from lots of good folks on this, so I think I'll be able to get it done soon. What I wonder, however, is why that gear is the only one made of cheap pot metal. Years ago when it failed, that was the only part unavailable from Powermatic and I wasn't able to find another replacement anywhere. I was told that the Jet version wouldn't work by the Powermatic folks. My cynical self assumes that it was obsolescence by design, but perhaps it was a purposeful sacrificial piece to keep the machine from tearing up other more expensive parts when the gears bind up. Of course, the unavailability of only that item brings me back to the former observation... Perhaps experienced machine pros can shine a more objective light on the subject. Oh, and I also bought and still have the Jet version that I bought against JPW's advice. Looking forward to getting a fully-functional sander again.

I have this machine also. When i got it it was working. My on-off switch was in upside down. I moved my shop. Got set up and ready to sand something, and it would not power up. I noticed your machine has a toggle switch. Do you think that switch went bad? Thanks for your time!

There could be a chance the switch went bad, and it's not very expensive to try and trouble shoot that.

@wheresmytapemeasure I did check out the switch, and sure enough, after removing it, I found a wire that was loose. Fixed that and am back in business. Thanks for taking the time to reply and also for the video. It really helped me to understand the way the machine works. ☮️

I was curious if you used parts from the jet model as I cant find anything for powermatic

I did, there was no other option. The parts were similar, but not the same. But I made it work. Do you have the Powermatic sander?

Looked at eReplacementparts, the parts referenced in the video look like they're right out of the Jet JBOS-5, which is kinda handy. They also have a part number for cap head machine screws that may save you needed to grind down the existing bolts that connect to the motor housing. Cool video! Found a local guy on Marketplace that's selling a used one for $150, wanted to do a little research. Think I'll pick it up. I picked up a mid-80's 141 badnsaw and brought that back to life, kida fun.

I ended up buying it for $60, do you mind sharing the parts you bought to replace the worm drive assembly, this one has the exact same issue - otherwise in fantastic shape.

I have the same exact issue - if you have the parts list that you bought and could share, that would be awesome!

Great vid brother. Where can I buy that gear from? I have a machinist buddy who could possibly mill it to fit the housing.

Hey Bruno, I got it at Ereplacement parts.com. It's a worm gear for Jet JBOS-5. A guy that watched this video did just that! He bored out the holes needed and said it works perfectly. He also said that the steel is a lot harder than he expected even with machinist tools, so be ready for a fight! lol Good luck!

@@wheresmytapemeasure I have found the part for 43 bucks as you've mentioned. On the original gear, why couldn't you turn the two small pieces that fit into each side. Turn those smaller to fit the new gear? Thanks

@@roofermarc1 I thought of that, but I lack the tools to do that. I'd have to pay someone to do that since I don't have any machinist friends. It would cost me more in a minimum than the sander is worth! lol

@@wheresmytapemeasure oh yeah I understand. I do have a wood lathe and could possibly do that myself if the metal isn't to hard. Do you think that would work? Easily tried one way or the other. Someone needs to fabricate the gears for these and offer them both as a set.

@@roofermarc1 I would think it would work, then you wouldn't have to buy a new housing or all the other smaller parts to modify it. Accuracy seems key though as you wouldn't want them to be loose. You should give it a go, you really got nothing to lose

I have this machine! The problem with mine is that it goes up at a slightly different angle than it comes down. With your experience being inside one do you think it could be fixed? I don’t mind getting my hands dirty but I suspect a bent rod or something. Where do you get the parts?
