This technology looks stone-age by today’s standards, but at the time this was Star Trek level stuff. Amazing how things have changed in such a short time.

While this unit being a Philips rebadged model might feel like a bit of a letdown, it's not such a bad thing when it comes to disassembling one of those. Have you watched any same-era Powerbook repair videos? They are brittle plastic nightmares these days! I'm wondering, on the other hand, why this device needs that many batteries. Yes, CD ROM drives can reach crazy speeds, but that's with more modern ones. This one is maybe, what, 4x?

Absolutely - Philips is known for their quality, especially early CD tech. I actually still use my Philips CD100! Believe it or not, this is only a 2x CD drive. I'm guessing they chose 8x AA's because it gets you to 12v easily?
