@@lachlanlau I thought he was referring solely to the 7th gen. I'm mentioning that the feature existed at least as far back as the 5th. Btw FM radios were the included in all the nanos from 5-7 and all the classics 3-7 can use a special apple in-line remote that connects to the dock connector that gives it an fM radio (plug it in and the hidden radio UI will appear on the main menu) also ALL the Nanos can use this attachment aswell

The flat flex that separated from the touchscreen was likely Z-taped in place. It's an adhesive tape which has conductive strands running perpendicular to the surface and the adhesive is heat activated. The mesh piece is part of acoustic tuning of the earbuds and should ideally be washed out in a suitable solvent and reinstalled back.

I don't think this is the only other iPod with built-in FM tuner. The 6th Gen iPod Nano that some wear like a watch with its aftermarket watch band case also has an FM tuner. I was one of those geeks that wore mine on my wrist and though the wire to the ear pods acted like the antenna, the reception was not very good but that was my Apple watch before there were Apple Watches.

This was one of the few versions I didn't purchase by this point I was listening to shuffles and then the iPod touch. I only listen to one radio station and that's NPR as most radio and all commercials annoy me, but I borrowed one at one point and I really liked the radio station option. I remember some geeks(!) Wearing the 6th generation as a watch.. but I had no idea that it had radio. The crux for me would be that you would have to have wired headphones and wearing it on my wrist would be.. weird?? That's why I just love channels like this where we can talk about our favorite parts of apple/ipod years afterwards... And if you're talented, even resurrect them! Cheers!

The 6th gen had a built in radio as well, the headphones you use serve as the antenna. I bought both the 6th and 7th gen on OfferUp just to have them because they're so neat! I really wish the 6th gen had lightning though. The 30-pin is fitting, but you could probably get a bump in battery with the smaller lightning port.

Oh god this just reminded me of the absolute nightmare that was replacing the LCD of this model was for me. Luckily I thought ahead for once in my life and bought an extra digitiser because I knew I could very easily fuck up the display too. (Spoilers, I did) I'm not sure how you're supposed to do this without obliterating the LCD, the old one practically turned into dust. And to top it all off, the frame got bent last second as I was fitting the display assembly back on. So now it's collecting dust and shit inside. For the life of me I CANNOT find a replacement midframe anywhere online which is so incredibly annoying as I've abused the current one a lot and I wouldn't feel confident reusing it. So yeah, now I'm left with a cute nano that has a lifted display which I REFUSE to reopen unless I have another LCD or just some extra parts with me. Dealing with nanos results in complete CARNAGE. To the general viewer, please avoid working with those if you can, it's absolutely horrible, it's not a fun repair, and you'll end up with a working (hopefully) but very mangled tech sandwich

Thanks for the video! My first iPod nano 7th gen got washed in the machine after about a year of use. I put it into a box of rice for a week, it then worked fine for many years but the screen never worked after the washing. Just plug into a stereo or computer to set it on random, play and skip songs you didnt want with the toggle. It finally tanked, and as a guy that can fix anything I am thinking about taking the plunge. I have a couple more 7th gens, one that had a new battery installed by the seller, but it's bad after 6 months... and my current 7th gen with a badly broken screen and lcd but it still works when set on random and control with the toggle. Going to give repairs a shot after I order some supplies and tools. Thanks HUGH !!

Apple had to deal with quite a few unhappy customers bringing the 7th gen back, whom they'd tell to calibrate and reset it. Which sometimes would work, sometimes not. Any recommendations on who would do repairs such as these? Can't find anyone to fix any of my ipods and I can't bear to throw them out lol. Even through they are a decade old they still look good now as they did back then

I was looking for how to replace the battery since mine does not hold the charge. After all these years I guess the battery is gone. But looks like too much effort for me

I wonder how long the repair took. I am assuming that it was edited down. Why is this important? Well, the costs of parts, + repair time could be more than what the value of this iPod is worth. It may be less expensive just to get a new one. [This, as it seems is how companies design their products these days.]

There is obvious editing, yes. I'd say it took a little over an hour to repair.

He is repairing it and filming the repair so it would not be an accurate gage of how long it would take just doing the repair without filming

Well… that’s the thing. A majority of the repairs Hugh does would be unreasonable for your average technician considering the amount of time and money needed to be put into these devices. Normally, it wouldn’t really make much sense to even repair such devices like the ones Hugh does for such a small profit margin-if any at all. But the reason as to why Hugh specifically is able to go to the extent of repairing something to the point of a loss in profit just so it’s cosmetically appealing is because it’s not the device that makes him the money. It’s the videos. He doesn’t need to worry about those factors since the videos are where all of the profit comes from. Either way, as for the device in this video, iPods aren’t in production anymore. Every model other than the Touch was discontinued a number of years ago but even recently was the Touch also discontinued. They’re highly sought after and, depending on the condition, are worth anywhere from $80 - $300. Very much worth repairing.
