Got a similar pile of dead drills ages ago and was determined to fix em. Made the mistake of losing a ball bearing when I opened up the gearbox of a 90s cordless makita drill. Didn't trust myself to put it back together in the right order after so long, especially since I couldn't find proper documentation on repairing that model's internals. I'm happy to report that this video showed me enough of those drill's guts to confirm that makita has been building them pretty much the same as 30 years ago apart from the batteries and shells! Now I can finally follow along and get that old drill back in order!

it always warms my heart to give tools new life. I bought 2 brushless dewalt impacts on flea market that were broken and was able to switch parts between them till i got one working again. I also replaced Lithium cells in the battery and got it working too. I feel some dose of pride when i use it :)

I've never repaired cordless power tools, as I don't use them. I only use corded power tools. These cordless drills sure are complicated and complex. You did well getting so many working again without spending a lot of money. Now the money is in the replacement batteries!

enjoyed your "adventure" very much. I like how you tried to figure out the puzzles on your own. Thank you.

Great video!! The problem with 451 Makitas is usually the speed change ring with the inside teeth being worn on the on top in the middle of the ring, but maybe in your case it was the gear case. When you removed the shaft on the white makita you could have just clamped the shaft in the vise and remove the chuck. If nothing works, just cutting the chuck off is a great and fast option. One more suggestion is to watch Dean Doherty on YT, he has an absolute plethora of knowledge on this subject

Talk about mud wasps - I turned on the exhaust fan in my shop, which I had not used for some time. It didn't turn, but just hummed. I investigated the cause and I found a mud wasp nest the size of a tennis ball built in the housing, stopping the blade from turning. Once removed, the fan worked again. I also find all sorts of holes filled up in all sorts of things like you found on the drill.

I have an 4" XU1 angle grinder that had a worn out bush at the back of the output shaft. I'm in Australia and I could not find a replacement bush anywhere and Ozito does not stock internal parts for their power tools. I ended up finding a bush on eBay in England and I got the grinder back into service again. Another one was a Taurus (Aldi brand) 5" angle grinder that burnt out the power switch. I found the correct replacement switch at Jaycar Electronics, so that one is back in service again also.

how much would it cost to buy new or second hand batteries for these five drills?

Quality content. I found your channel when repairing my huqsvarnas oil pump. Love these repair videos. Would be even better if you would go into the mechanics a bit more. Like how the gearing or trigger mechanisms work etc.

I've got power tools, some of which I've had for over 50 years, so parts, even brushes are just not available. When I need brushes, I check out eBay and I can get brushes that are either the correct size, or sometimes I might need to trim down brushes that are a little larger to fit.

Yeah, this was a rough one. I started filming in June and didn't finish until November. I had almost 8 hours of video and it took me at least 7 full days to edit it all down. It didn't help that I also had to wait over 8 weeks for some of the parts. I'm just glad it's done! :)

@@Mikeattempts You are pretty good at video editing. I use the free program Shotcut to do a bit of video editing, but video editing is really above my pay grade and I can only do simple stuff. Anything more complicated, I get my son to do. I think he uses Premier and he's really good at video editing, so that gets me out of trouble.

Makita like Bosch and Dewalt actually sell parts for their tools! Although they all seem to price certain parts so high these days that just buying new tools become the better option, pesky corporations!
