Brilliant!! I was pretty much giving up on my HP G62-02 laptop as a pile of crap - it's only 2 years but had over-heated a few times so when it refused to do any form of POST or boot sequence I tried all the usual stuff of RAM re-seating etc and then found this video. With nothing to lose I covered all by the GPU chip with thick foil and then used my paint-stripping gun to heat it up. It took 3 goes and then bingo!! burst back into life. Well done for posting!!

Thanks alot! My G1S (GT 8600M) died this morning after 4 years of 24-7 use. I had to do this procedure couple of times today with my hot air station. First on 200C for about 3-4 minutes, the GPU started but then it kinda died again. I did it 2 more times with 340C (soldering station btw), its working pretty fine now

@paginipro it's different, it can be 1-2 months, but if you do the heat up phase twice, it can be half a year. Last time i added a small copper plate between the gpu and the heat sink, and it's working since december, (9 months) it seems to work longer on every computers i have done.
@kadamka

@davisstjames i think it's absolutely good idea to install the plate, but i don't know how long it will prevent. One more thing, you all have to be aware: never take the notebook out, to cold air, when it's hot, or open the window next to it, to avoid radical thermal expansion, and the cracking of the soldering.
@kadamka
@kadamka 14 жыл бұрын
@veggav it's just an adapter you can pull it out (google for hp sata hdd connector). You can try to fix the drive in another computer, or in a rack, but in worst case you will have to change it.

So, I'm hoping to do this tomorrow. Just a couple questions- So, I have available to me a soldering gun and also a blowtorch. Which would work better? Also, before you reflowed the GPU, you were cleaning it? Did you use anything special to do that, besides a wet paper towel, and is this step important? And what was the little thing you put thermal paste on? Thanks for the help!

Thank you soo much dude! Well, the thing using aluminium foil and the hot gun to resolder BGAs wasn't new for me. But hey, you're really great, how did you find out, that its all a matter of bad soldered bumps in this case? Great! My laptop had this strange colored, vertical stripes over the whole screen and WIN7 just recognised the minimal resolution of 640x480 and 16(!) colors... Now, after the hotgun thing its just perfect again, thanks really a lot! Greetz from Switzerland, Simon
@kadamka
@kadamka 13 жыл бұрын
@debs222 it can be. for example if you cover the notebook with towels, and turn it on, the gpu makes enough heat, to "reflow itself". It works on the same principe, but it can cause damage, and it won't last long! if problem occors again, just open it, and give some heat.
@kadamka
@kadamka 14 жыл бұрын
@iben092 i used a bosch heat gun. you can see at 4:40 i checked it with the screen. i've done it about 40-50 sec, moving the heat gun up and down, and in circles. maybe it will last longer if you do it once more after it slowly cooled down.

@kadamka I've used an old hard drive from another notebook. The strange part is, the hard drive original to the dv6500 boots from usb. So it is a problem in the bios checking the hd. I thought maybe I could update the bios, but there is nothing in the bios to do that. No AZ Flash like a Asus motherboard :( Did you ever saw this problem before ?

Hey friend, nice video!! It's a great trick to fix this lame issue. Let me ask you, I'm with my gf dv6500 here it won't boot. I would try other hard drives but the stupid hp have some kind of one of the kind notebook hard drive connector.. (sighs).. well it takes a lot of time in bios "videos bios shadowed" and it don't see my hard drive to boot it up. What do you think could fix that ?

@sasuke61694 don't do it with the torch, i think open flame can cause damage, i always use heater gun (which you can see). Clean the chips from dried thermal paste, you can do it with some alcohol and a bit paper, i don't know how important is it, but i think it can give out more heat with clean surfaces. After i put the thermal paste, i just smoothed the paste on the chip. Put a small copper or alu plate on it as well, about 15mmx15mm, it will last much longer (between gpu and heat sink)

Hi Kadamka, i got an HP Pavilion DV6-2010sa. Has the caps lock and numlock lights blinking twice. Upon looking it up, HP says it is a CPU failure. So i changed the CPU but i still get the same error. The screen also remains blank. I would like to know if this routine could fix my issue.

I got a Dell XPSM1530 which is NVIDIA 8600MGT GDDR3, now it couldnt boot up with, and it's because of GPU, I've tried heat the gpu with hair dryer (side covered with alu foil) without open up the whole laptop, only open its bottom cover, well, it does boot up and still usable like usual, gaming no problem at all(as long as letting it remain turn on, just it will not boot again if you restarted, shutdown, standby or hibernate the laptop,have to heat it everytime to turn it on, what should I do?

What was the initial problem? I mean why did you heat your motherboard up, cause I'm having trouble reading my 8400 GS and this problem occured after 4 years, just all of the sudden after one day. Updating drivers isn't working so I might attempt this. Can you list what you are doing? Kinda hard seeing some of the steps you take.

This worked for me on a pavilion dv9000 cost me about $40 dollars (heat gun + thermal compound + small screwdriver set). Which would have otherwise cost me hundreds and weeks/months of waiting. Yet it only worked for 1 -2 days then did the same thing. I failed, however to notice that when you hold the GPU down with a paper towel the video is actually in fast forward so I must have not applied the pressure long enough, also, I noticed the mention of a copper plate in the posts which ...

well i am pretty sure it has both integrated and dedicated , on device manager in video adapter tab i can see both intel hd graphics gt 540m gpu . this means it has both .ALSO the laptop is using nvidia optimus technique which switches between integrated and dedicated according to need. so i was wondering if i have integrated intel graphics ,SUPPOSE if dedicated nvidia gpu fails then intel hd graphics will be the default graphics? cuz one guy said if dedicated one fails whole laptops is dead?.

the hair dryer is like the "towel trick" it works for a very short time, or just a for few startups, it's because the heat is not sufficent. A heat gun produces 300-500 C degrees, what makes solder reach liquid state. A hair dryer can't produce that much heat.

dont't apply pressure, while heat, the chip can slide, and shortcut the solder balls! If the result wasn't long enough, try to heat it for longer. Anyway 1,5 min on 300 C degrees, won't kill it, so do it. Be sure, the plate is perfectly flat, and it's surface is smoot, then place it on the top of the chip, making sure, it can't touch the small resistors near the core. I hope i could help.

My hp g62-b90ev has had overheating issues before but with a laptop cooler it was fine, then I had to get it to a technician so he could clean everything up reallly good. Now, a year later, my laptop is almost 3 years old and the worst thing happened 3 days ago when i got a black screen after the windows logo during boot up. It can boot on safe mode so I just uninstalled all ati drivers and re-installed them, then some older versions. Nothing works. All I can do now is have it with the standard VGA driver and a crappy resolution/slower PC/can't even play HD videos or any games. Please help!!

HP DV2000 no wifi cond. has been soft fixed here with (nvidia fluidmark) benchmark software prog install run as it is bout 5 min close prog shutdown comp. restart and it should see your wifi again atleast on my DV2000 series labtop it is not permanant fix but does seem to work all the same. I have to do it after every reboot/shutdown cond so not permanant but one would think that a programmer could write up an program to tweak the chip how ever the fluidmark prog is and make it semi-permanant

@chess012345 next time don't use flame to heat the chip, as i know it can spoil it. For some of us it was temporary, or quite long lasting solution, to heat it twice, and put some copper plate between sink and chip. The most professional method is, to reball the chip, (BGA), but it's quite expensive, and it needs some special equipment.
@kadamka
@kadamka 11 жыл бұрын
I don't know this issue, but as you told cpu changing doesn't help, than it's something else on motherboard... Well, doing this method wont harm even if it's no problem with your GPU soldering, so my opinion is, it worth a try. Maybe it's the GPU, because it's a HP, and it's really common. Try it, and i keep fingers crossed, you wont make it worse. If it doesn't help, try it with the chipset as well. Pleas let me know, how it worked!

A quick fix I have found that works for my Hp pavillion g7-1075dx computer (my computer boots to a black screen with an amber light on the wifi button and sometimes a blue light on the number lock key) is to place the computer on a pillow until it gets very warm ( I usually leave it there for an hour). Then power down the computer and reboot. I've kept my computer alive doing this for about a year.

@kr3cho hi i guess it won't work with the hair dryer, i don't think it can heat up to 200-210˙C if it could, it would melt in your hand... you don't need any professional stuff, a cheap one from china can do it as well, i think you can buy it for about 15 euros. AND don't push the chip hard, it can slide a bit, and then it's game over. if you sure, you can't buy a heat gun, you can try a 100w halogen light bulb, from about 3-5 cms for 1,5 minutes. i haven't try it, i just saw it in another vid.
