Holy shit!!! I just did this trick to my DV6040US and it worked first try!!!!! You are not only my hero, but the smartest user on KZbin! HP wanted to charge me $250 for the motherboard for a home repair and up to $450 for the repair service! Thanks to you I don't need either! Thank you so much!!!!!

Another one lives! Pete is a hero-thanks mate. Symptoms of my DV6000 was, on pressing power button, I had blue leds for a second, no fan, blank screen, then nothing. I followed this video, used a 1 inch square of copper made from an off-cut of plumbers 22mm copper pipe, flatted out with a hammer and filed flat to remove highs. The pen torch I bought was like a flame thrower, so I used a plumbers blow torch instead on lowest it would go for 20 seconds! Scary, but effective. Thanks again, Pete!

What a great video. Same thing happened to my daughter's DV6000. Got copper sheet from Hobby Lobby, cut up a Coke can, folded four sheets of heavy duty aluminum foil three times. Cut a one inch square out of copper and used as a template to cut the hole in the can. Used a little scotch tape to hold the aluminum/can heat sink in place. Raised temperature of GPU card to 220C (measured with IR Tempgun). Tested and worked! Also failed WiFi now works too! Thanks a bunch Pete!

Hey, thanks. My friend gave me his computer to replace the motherboard. His warranty is up, HP customer support told him it would be $150 to diagnose the problem, if he sent it in. That was not including fixing it. He heard/read that he would need to replace the entire motherboard. I decided to investigate... this video was right on! I am waiting for some thermal grease to arrive in the mail before I put it back together but I tested it as you did in the video and got the HP logo to pop up! TY!!

Just out of the storage in the attic it suprisingly worked again (maybe due to the heat in the attic during summer) but died 2 weeks after. Did your technique but with hot air reflow station and it's back to life. WLAN back to life after 3 yrs dead. Yahoo!

Excellent, I tried it and Its REALLY WORKING, I don' understand why HP wants me to pay for something I did not brake, its not our fault that they don't know what they're doing. Good video! I've repaired about 4 machine using ALMOST this same method. Only difference is that I wrap the motherboard in foil, razor out a square above the video chip, the square that comes out I put a little silicone based thermal grease on it and stick it to the chip so the foil will not blow away. Then I stick about 3mm of solder wire on top, hit it with a heat gun until that solder melts (which tells me when it's properly hot) let it cool off for about 10 min then all back together!

I ran across this on a cooler website when I first asked the question. "Copper is more conductive than aluminum, aluminum is more radiant. The copper pulls the heat off the CPU quicker, but the aluminum dissipates heat quicker into the air. The copper heat sink would have to be larger than the aluminum one to keep up under load for a length of time. If it can't get rid of its heat as fast as it pulls it in, it will heat up over time and temps will rise." I used AL, it's still working just fine

My original rework with a blow lamp failed after three weeks. I have now put it in the oven for 5 minutes on 200 degs C and back working again. On reassembly, I had audio and/or power button not working. I found that the micro ribbon cables to the tiny pcb become damaged the more they are inserted and removed. I cured this by using a sharp a pair of scissors and cutting off around 2mm from the end. Perfect. Fingers crossed for a long life this time!

@edvinovic The white mass is thermal compound, it is necessary to transfer the heat properly to the heatsink. The plate is copper, it helps with heat reduction as well.

@waqsss If im not compleatly wrong: This mod "reflows" the chip. The reson you had to do this mod is that hp made the cooling to weak so the chip gets so hot that the solder "runs" away. When adding the copper plate you solve some of the heat issues so if you can keep the heat down it should last "forever".

bhoomikp: Yep, that's the same problem he's describing here. I just applied this fix to a DV6000, and it worked great. I used a heat gun instead of the open flame shown in this video. And I followed the advice of another person on a different forum, where they told you to stack 2 nickels and 8 quarters on top of the chip. Then apply the heat primarily to the quarters. It worked great. It's great that this company is sharing this information online. Says a lot about them, I think.

Yes, i would like to know what the heating up of the graphic card does as well. I am already to go to do this, but before i heat up the card, i would like a little explanation. Also, i want to confirm the order of the reassembly of the heat sink. Graphic Chip - liquid compound - Copper shim - ?more liquid compund and/or pre-existing pad?- Heat sink. I just want to confirm what is between the copper and heat sink. Thanks and great video. Really hoping this workds.

This video was so helpful. Black screen, and you showed me how to get into my DV6000. Heated the GPU and made a copper shim by pounding a penny into the size of a loonie. (canadian hey). Even the WiFi worked again, maybe it was because I connected the ribbon cable each time I took the HP apart. (3x). It only cost me $16.00 for the Canadian Tire iroda micro-jet, it supports a very small but hot flame. And I heated it got hot to the finger for only a second. works great now thanks for the video.
@TheLaptopDoctor14 жыл бұрын
Nice short term solution. I go for perm. Generally this method will only last about 3 months at most. And there are dangers that may further damage the GPU and motherboard. 1: Wire brush burrs the vents even further- causing more lint to collect later. 2: Flame- use of a flame on the GPU can cause damage to the surface. 3: the 'copper shim' that was made can short the various resistors on the GPU it should have a plastic mask over the GPU if using a shim. 4: Oxidatation has not been removed.

@mixcatcom yes i expected the red glue was to keep the chip in place, probably an attempt to correct the problem from factory, my model number is a dv6500, which is not covered by the hp warranty, either way it would power on, but not boot up and just a blank screen, i tried the gas torch like you did, and did not make any difference, i tried several times with no success, the last time i tried a hotter flame and i think it possibly damaged it, it now turns on and off by itself

Hi Pete. Thanks so much for the great help you're offering the community. After six months of no laptop I was getting desperate, so I tried it, and was surprised when my laptop started! But it only lasted for a week and now it's back to black screen of doom. So two questions 1) Do I reheat it again? Maybe I didn't do it long enough? 2) My board has two chips on it. A smaller one next to the CPU and a larger one branching off. I reheated both. Should I only be reheating 1 of them? Thanks a ton!

Another success case! I bought a 1300w hot air gun (advertised as 1600w), and using the low power mode (5A * 127V = 600w) I regulated the air flow so it would be enough to melt a little solder/tin I used to test the temperatures. (I also put another piece of tin wire over the chipset to monitor its surface temperature.) Then I got the temperature a little lower (a bit higher air flow) and heated the chipset for a minute or two, so it all would be pre-heated.

You solder without flux? With open flame? Soldering that way can lead to local overheats and "cold solderings". For do it right you need a soldering station (hot air gun) from the top and pre-heater from the bottom.

I followed the instructions on this video and fixed my dv6000! It is important to note that the video card that needs to be heated is the small one just next to the cpu. I have a secondary nvidia 7200 card on my mobo that I heated up on the first attempt. Luckily I didn't damage it. And be very careful with the power ribbons!! I damaged the one for the power button and my pc would only turn on for a few seconds so I just switched it with the one for sound. Video works though. Thanks for the vid!

Did mine but used a hot air gun to heat the chip (put a scrap of lead solder on top and heated until it was molten) then pressed gently down until it was cool. The original heatpad on the heatsink is woefully inadequate. Using a copper shim is essential to a long life repair.

Does it improve the wireless performance by increasing the surface area of the antenna or is it for better heat resistance because normal electrical tape wouldn‘t stick there. I ask because my piece of tape got worn out and now I‘m stuck on how much importance to give to this detail. Why are the two wires soldered together at that point?

@ROBECABAL, @NIKE10622, One major issue I can see with aluminum is that it will react with any copper (and some other metals) and oxidize. This is seen often in the electrical trade where old aluminum wired houses being joined with new copper wiring, in this case a special grease is used to stop this process (Eg. Ideal's Noalox anti-oxidant), however this seems very impractical in this case -- just get some copper.
