I have a 40 year old(May 8, 1982 is her build date) Ericson sailboat and Andy I'm so astounded that I don't have all these cracks and crazes in my gelcoat. I have severe oxidation even though I wax frequently. But I am thankful that this production boat was laid up correctly. I take care of her and I'm going to paint her this year. I was going to re gelcoat her but you have convinced me that paint is the way to go. I did a 7 layer barrier coating to her bottom last Spring, AWLGRIP on the water line and top stripes, all the bright work has been restored and the hull and topsides are the last to do. After 40 years, she has certainly deserved a makeover. Thank you for all the years of education. I love doing all my own work. I love doing glass work. I have torn out the cabin sole and will be replacing that also this year. Im confident I can do the topsides non skid thanks to your videos. By tge way, Awlgrip is so beautiful to work with. I was told it would be a real challenge and lots of men told me to not even try to use it. But I found it fun to work with. It flows so nicely ❤❤

I just bought an '87 MacGregor 26D... lots of old screw holes to fill, a bunch of areas with spidercracks, some larger damaged areas (appx 5-20 in2)... watching your videos is really helping me understand my options for repairs before painting. It's a LOT of work putting these types of videos together and publishing... I deeply appreciate your investment in these excellent tutorials.

I just finished rehabbing the companion way slide and sea hood on my project sailboat, following this video to a "T", except for the gel coat step ( I used a wax additive for the cure). I am completely amazed at the result. I'd call myself an amateur with a fair amount of experience with glassing and small boat building, but I still can't get over how well my parts came out. They look like new! Thanks Andy!

Handy Andy. 😮 I did a patch under boat. Grinder it fairly good and the water still started peeling it off after a summer run. Lol I kept watching it. And now I bought ugly old boat with 1957 chevy wings. Not one of the little boats. I got all the 57 stuff lol. Bottom looks good. But I want to strengthen up transom . It’s not bad. 2 ways to doo it lol.?? 😮

You are a true artist and professional, Andy. The videos are priceless and very useful to me, in the effort of restoring my old boat, thank you. The videos are recommended for the handyman, who wants to do the job himself, but for best results, it's better leaving this to Andy. Anyway, it will be more fun to do the job with this basic knowledge. /William

Nice video! Thanks! A recommendation...you can use “surfacing agent in your resin (or in gelcoat) instead of covering it with pva. It is a mixture of parafin and styrene. You put a little in the resin, and the wax comes to the surface to keep the air off the surface so it doesn’t remain sticky. Try it...you’ll love it. No more pva needed. Works in gelcoat too. (Not for expoxies)

Great video I'm glad you need the hardner or your mixture would not harden ha ha 👍 but I do enjoy your skills I do a bit of glass works as well dit the back of a glass repro of a Cobra 🐍 that had bad bondo not enough Gardner and a few fracture cracks V them out and used kitty hair fiberglass with a bit of polyester resin to fill them then a thin coat of bondo and epoxy primer.

Always and forever love your work. Thinkin that if it has cracked so much must have been underbuilt from the start.? New glass is only a cover unless supported from both sides.? Without upgrading/adding more core material ply/coosa ect.? Love your channel love the all the information.!

Naive question...why at 6:36 do you have to topcoat the epoxy resin to fully cure? Been years since I've done any epoxy over glass mat but I have no recall of any topcoat - just air cure, sand, prime and paint. Asking as I have just patched bottom hull damage with some glass mat and epoxy and plan to prime then simply antifoul over it figuring the epoxy patch is waterproof and does not need barrier coat. Small area but don't want to miss a step.

Hi Andy. Have 1984 whaler that has a deck with a lot of spider cracks. I really don’t want to Toto them out nor add a layer of glass. I’d like to just apply something that would fill in the cracks. A one and done. Will awlgrip do that? Would a truck bedliner like line-x work?
