Back in the day, I spent a small fortune playing this. I always wanted one but $15,000 was a way beyond my price range. I ended up getting a job at the arcade I lived at. That was in 1988. Fifteen years later, in 2004, I found one for sale for $600 and drove 1,200 miles to pick it up. It was the full-size beast and weighed a ton... I should have never gotten rid of it. It was a great game for it's time. I sure hope to stumble on another one day. They are definitely classics.

One of my top 5 faves of all time. I was working at Aladdin's Castle when this came out. We had the sitdown cabinet. I'd come in to work every day and the damn fast lap had always been set by some dude named Phantom Photon. I assumed he must also work in the mall and played on his lunch break. I always hoped to meet him one day, since he was clearly fast, since he always had the high score when I got there. I was even better though, I always beat his ghost car in the championship race. One of us always held the high score and fast lap. It took me like a month until I finally opened on a Saturday and turned the machines on to realize that Phantom Photon was just the default AI high score driver. I wasn't competing against another human being, I was just racing the CPU every time because no one else could beat the top time besides me. :) There's a sit-down Race Drivin' at one of my local arcades. Even with other choices, I usually pick the original stunt track, as that one is the. most fun. (The corkscrew is just too difficult.) I still regularly beat my old rival Phantom Photon. :) I've got first dibs on the machine if the owner ever decides to sell.

We had this woman call us once and buy a Centipede we had for sale, after we delivered it, she said she didn't want to tell us ahead of time... but she thinks that's the exact same one she used to play at the Ice Cream shop when she was a little girl, because her initials were still on it. We didn't tell her the initials were the random ones the game loads up like you're talking about, why ruin her fun?

I recall having to repair those machines when they first came out. So heavy and we would always find the motor driver had died. Two actually set on fire !. We had to install one of the larger units in the 3rd storey of a building and it had to be carried up the service stairs due to the size and mainly because the stairwalker wouldnt fit in the stair well.

I grew up and still live in a rural area. Our county fair use to have an arcade set up in a tent during the fair and this is one of the games they had. I’m more amazed at this game now than I was back then. I had no idea it was so complicated!! Just look at the size of those computer boards and the size of that motor for the force feedback! It’s unbelievable. The guys who lugged all those heavy machines around from fair to fair in the summer heat earned an honest living.

The physics was done by the son of the guy who wrote the book of vehicle physics modeling. No really, he was the pioneer. He worked for all the major auto companies, tire companies and F1 car teams. Aeronautics-built the first plane in Maine, involved with the B-17 and B-29. That's why the physics and the force feedback are so good. Secret: You can cut the corner after the jump and before the loop. Follow the speed signs. You can go a little above the speed signs.

You are spot on, alot of us LOVED this at the time. Race Drivin' was out right around the time I was learning to drive and I took massive pride in using the full manual with clutch setting, and eventually beating the Super Stunt Track with corkscrew, mega steep top hat, and loop with an upside down jump - after months of practice. That was a great accomplishment for me at the time! The unit I played was a full sit-down cabinet in Spaceport Arcade at Greenbrier Mall in Chesapeake, VA. Edit: Yup I always used the brakes - those signs before the stunts let you know a good speed for the stunt you are about to hit.

A friend of mine wrote the simulation model for this. Atari hid his name, listed him as a "test driver" in the credits, in order to keep from tipping off the competition about how the physics engine worked. This and Race Drivin' were favorites of mine. Joe, you always have GREAT stuff to show us! Hyper-interesting, well researched and well-presented. Kudos. I noticed the voltage on that Tantalum that you replaced, the cap said 20volts. Would that be problematic in a 10v circuit? I see that it works just fine, once replaced. Well done! I LOVED this game when it came out. It blew me away. I hadn't seen fully painted polygons like that before. And the only other polygon system I had seen before this was 1980's Battle Zone. All good wishes.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
On capacitors in general the voltage rating is the voltage that they can tolerate, so if you go higher on the voltage rate you're still alright. It's like if you have a car that can go 100 mph, it still drives fine at 50mph, the capacitor can allow 20 volts through it but still works fine with 10 volts running through it. This was a big step up from Battlezone graphically, but Battlezone was a great game too of course :) Thanks for watching Anton!

Yet, this Atari game was really impressive and, although not playing it, I watched it for a while a couple of times. So advanced. Thanks for showing its entrails, this is crammed with boards.

I remember playing this game when it was brand newly arrived at my arcade, and what fun it was. We were blown away by the feedback steering and the realistic braking. It wasn’t long, however, before the game was all beat up from kids abusing it. Most of the time the feedback steering didn’t work and the brake pedal flopped loosely. Amazing driving simulation, but susceptible to the ravages of Mountain Dew-addled teens.

This game.. this game and Race Drivin taught me how drive a clutch. Heck I'm still great at it! PRGE 2018 I was hanging with John Riggs, played this in the free play arcade, one round for 15 minutes.. once I was done, Ben Heck was there with Riggs watching and was amazed.. held the #1 spot all weekend. Good times!

Interesting stuff...You can tell when a PCB has a sensitive spot when the designer puts a " keep out " zone around the parts, you can see around the area you were working on, there is nothing but plain fiberglass board (FR4) its deliberately kept clear of power and signal...cheers.

I played that game in a local mall arcade back in the early 90s. It was the sit down cockpit cabinet version like you mentioned in the video. It was a great game to play. It was kind of difficult to play too but I got better after playing it for a while. The loop was hard at first to get all the way around it. Yes, I think you can fall off of the sides of the loop and crash.

Tantalum caps have a higher capacity and lower leakage then regular electrolytic caps. If I remember my basic electronics correctly, you can swap an electrolytic cap with a tantalum, but the opposite is not always true. In circuits where those low leakage and high capacity properties are needed, you should not swap a tantalum with a electrolytic.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
I think I accidentally figured that out on this particular design :) Thanks for watching MrRobarino and for the information!

I looked for someone to refurb it 5 years ago, but its like that trade is almost hard to find out there. After watching your channel, im thinking of tackeling it myself. Just take all the steps for safety first. Mainly just going to recap it and clean the inside a little. Still remember playing the Atari 2600 on that tv😊.

We have a cockpit Race Drivin’. Brakes still ok for now, but now I know how to fix it! Got curious and asked around about the tantalum cap. Seems they are better at filtering noise than standard due to lower ESR. Looks like polymer type may also work for same reason. Great content as always!

Tantalum caps have lower equivalent series resistance. They're common in analog/digital circuits where signals are small & losses can cause problems.

@electronash
@electronash 3 жыл бұрын
I think the tantalum cap was used here because it has a lower leakage current? The change in resistance from the strain gauge is so low that the circuit around the AD711 (an opamp) needs to be quite precise. Looks like the tant cap was likely being used for filtering the signal from the strain gauge. That whole resistor setup before the opamp is like a voltage divider, but the opamp also has some feedback/gain. The electrolytic was probably "leaking" just a bit too much current, dropping the voltage on the positive opamp input a bit too much.
@electronash
@electronash 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what SG.SW means, unless there's a pot somewhere for adjusting the bias for the strain gauge, or maybe that's a reference voltage from the ADC circuit.

The first Driving Simulation arcade game to my memory was "Night Driver," back in 1978 or so. It was in Black & White, and you had to drove between the pylons. It was fascinating even by today's standards as the physics of driving was spot on even by 40 year old technology. I've played Night Driver at the 42nd Street Arcade at Time Square NYC. It was one of the more expensive games to play at $1 when all other games was 25cents.
