In this video we're repairing rust on a project car, tackling the dreaded B-Post welding repair which is a common area to rot out on the VW MK1 caddy. In our case, there was a previous rust repair hiding underneath filler that wasn't apparent until we had the project car blasted. Once we chopped out that repair it revealed more rust hiding and more work was necessary than originally thought. This is often the case when repairing rot holes on cars, what's visible from the outside is just the tip of the iceberg and it's not always possible to know how big a welding job is going to be before you make the initial incision.

Thank you for posting this video of the B Post repair. I have a 1980 Caddy with the exact same problem. I'm learning how to MIG weld now and will need to tackle this fix at some point after I get more experience with easier repairs. I've been looking for a video to explain how to do this and you came through. Thanks again!

Why did you chose not to weld the top of the rear 1/4 panel back into the structure of the b post? The b post is going to have lots more chance of flexing near where the original joint was with no support from the rear.

Was going that deep necessary? Ever heard of Tectal? It looks like solidified fat in a pan but it really prevents all these unreachable areas to rust further but good job nonetheless.

Fantastic work! I'm always amazed when I see welded sheet metal ground down, and it looks like part of the original sheet metal! BTW - on an unrelated topic, I noticed you have electric steering installed on the Caddy. Was that a kit, or something lifted from another vehicle? Got a Mk1 Jetta that I'd like to do the same to. Is it worth the money and the work?
@RotboxMetalworks
@RotboxMetalworks 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers for the comment! The power steering build was our last video before this one 😀 Haven't tried it out yet so no idea if it's good but fingers crossed, we had a similar kit that we bought for our T25 and that was really good.

Cheers for the comment, I will chop it out and do the same on the other side as it looks the same as this side, but when we bought it the seam was filled anyway so we could have just filled it again 👍

@@RotboxMetalworks I see. I have a Caddy too. The chassis unfortunatelly has as much movement to crack the sealing/filler there. But if you will do the same matalwork on the other side, that will work for sure
