What a fascinating video Randy! Super clear and delightfully concise communication. You somehow made that repair more entertaining than I expected. Thanks so much for sharing.

This is the sort of video that would go viral if a majority of humans weren't so stupid. Well done sir, a testament to ingenuity and resourcefulness!

Thanks for the compliment. A lot of work went into this magnet. In the end it was definitely worth it. I learned a lot.

Randy Smith, I personally want to thank you for your kind efforts and comments, Cause you saved me from the headache since I was leaning towards 904. Again Thank you Randy! 🇺🇸 🇨🇱 🍻

The 904 is a nice mag drill. I have no issue with Hougen. They have a great reputation and I was honestly shocked they didn't have the parts available. But the drill is 20+ years old. In hindsight they could have referred me to a rewinder. I would have happily paid to have it fixed. In the end it was inexpensive to fix, less than $20. I learned a LOT and it was kinda fun. I used it all summer, it been working great.

@@MrSmithDotShop yes $20 in material but the loom took time for you to make sir.

Well done Randy. Isn’t a good feeling when a complex repair not only works but saves you a heap of money. And if you had to do it again it would probably only take half the time. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

I have a burned out base magnet in a Hougan 904. I need to find a spool or make it another way. Great job sir. I do have a small Sheldon lathe. hmmmm.
@MrSmithDotShop3 жыл бұрын
You might want to contact Hougan and find out if they can provide the coil. My magnet assembly wasn't available but I didn't think to ask about just replacing the coil. It's possible the coils are similar across models. They may be able to recommend a rewinder that can repair it. I designed my bobbin in Fusion 360 and 3D printed it. I used a Form Labs SLA printer but I'd imagine any 3D printer would work. I'm at a high school so 3D printers are readily available. I originally planned on turning the bobbin from plastic but I didn't have any scraps the right size. I also thought about making the bobbin from cardboard. For me the tricky part was reverse engineering the coil wire gauge and length. Measuring fine magnet wire can be tricky as some have thicker coatings than others. That is why I confirmed everything by weight in addition to the resistance calculation. I hope my video will inspire you to wind a coil. It did take a bit of work to sort it out but it has been worth it.

How did you connect the magnets wire

I removed the enamel with sand paper and soldered on the heavier leads that exit the magnet.

Thanks Cody. This repair was a great challenge and a lot of fun. I've been using the drill for several months and couldn't be happier. I have no idea how I made due without one for all these years.

Can you tell me dimension of coil and the input voltage of coil please🤔🤔🤔
@MrSmithDotShop Жыл бұрын
The spool dimensions are: ID 2.4375", OD 3.3", height 0.51". The print thickness is 0.06". This makes winding area 0.39" high and about 0.37" deep. I didn't measure the coil voltage but I'd expect it to be near 120V considering it uses a full bridge rectifier to convert all AC to DC.
