Reparations: What is owed to Black Americans?

American Black Journal and BridgeDetroit are teaming up to host a virtual town hall at 12 p.m. Feb. 16 about reparations for Black Americans. Join us as we take a detailed look at the history of reparations and discuss what Detroit’s new task force means for the idea. The esteemed panelists will share insights on the initial work being done on the ground floor in Detroit and more in a conversation moderated by American Black Journal host Stephen Henderson.
We want to hear your questions and thoughts on reparations too. The town hall will end with an opportunity for guests livestreaming in to connect with the panelists more on the topic, and learn how they can get involved.

From an insurance perspective, each issue of racism that we faced had its own merit. Defendants who are looking at multiple judgments against them would LOVE to muddy and mash up all of their wrongs in one neat settlement. It’s cheaper that way. That’s why people throw everything America did wrong into the reparation discussion. Stop that. Each issue has its own merit or type of harm to us. Slavery is money. Our ancestors weren’t paid and we want their checks. Period. Share cropping is also monetary to me. That’s a separate settlement at its own devastating value. Jim Crow can be money but it was mainly about a lack of opportunity. That’s where free education, neighborhood programs, free homes, tax exemptions come into play. If we settle all of these atrocities under one umbrella everything will be devalued and bargained down cheaper. I know, I do it every day. When you see our people, who say they understand politics or bargaining and they want to discuss ALL of the wrongs we’ve dealt with in one settlement, they are not for us because they know they’re cheating us. They’ve had a back room discussion, I know, and made compromises to appease all parties. As FBA/ADOS we don’t have a weak argument. Facts are facts. They are not going to win. America already has a history of paying money to descendants. There’s no valid defense other than, I’m white and I say so. So separate the merits of our claims and don’t have them bargain us into one settlement agreement to undercut the true value of the claims.

I’m not well read in the struggles of our people in every region, but I will say that the FBA people are fighters and riders. It’s not always in us to lay down. FBA are still being brutalized. So I don’t understand Brazil suffering more. FBA fought and died for better treatment. Brazil looks visually poor in our areas, but visual poverty and spiritual poverty are two different things. FBA was spiritually rich before integration. Desegregation has twisted our morals and values. Is THAT better? Now we can buy more poisoned food, more enemy products and time to spare to shake our ass disgracefully in the streets. What will Brazil fight for? To be like their oppressors? Stop looking at the green grass and look at the seed and the soil. But anyways, each of these racist systems, including African systems, function differently and must be fought differently. Act accordingly. And when it’s done, we’ll all praise the one true God for our salvation.

This new attitude that asking Black people to meet basic responsibilities, is somehow blaming the victim, need to stop. Malcolm, Jessie Jackson, and Farrakhan, especially, have held us accountable for our responsibilities. Al Sharpton seems to be moving into this direction, based on a resent radio broadcast I heard. Activist talk about community policing, but those words, brings to mind the community policing itself, to me. The first level of policing, starts with the the values and standards a people have and set for themselves, and their communities. Sharpton used the exact words 'values' in this broadcast I heard. Again he was talking about us, in regard to the violence among us - the Black on Black crime, which the mere phrase, brings more concern to many today, than does the actual harm it represents. They say we shouldn't use the term, because it makes us look pathological, when they are the only ones making that association with us publically. Us killing one another at the high rate we have been, for a long time, surely is a crime and crying shame, but to them it is "not a thing" anymore. They say people kill people they live near. This is outrageous, but we don't make a big deal out of this new dismissive attitude, many are exhibiting toward the value we place on our lives. We have made a bigger fuss over the use of the n-word and what we should be called. The ridiculous question of who we are as a people, gets more attention. This is the state of Black America, and we think mere reparation, in whatever form it could come, will undue this kind of basic problem among us. Would a great mind and heart like Dr. King, be silent about such obvious contradiction/hypocrisy on our part?

Your retirement can be your reparation if you plan it right. A high school student has many options. One option is to go into the military. You do not have to get a student loan. Because the military will pay you to go to school. Get your college degree, retire from the military and get a civil service job, and retire from there. Now you have two retirements and social security at sixty-two years old. That is your reparations. Do not wait for the government. Do your own thing. The opportunity is there. This is what many black men did that went in the army back in the 60s and 70s.

Would only descendants of slaves qualify? What to do about Black people who immigrated? What to do about Black people whose families owned slaves? Giving anyone without experience in managing money a large check could in many cases do more harm than good. Look at the people who have won large sums and squandered it. That windfall did more harm than good. If some form of reparation is deemed necessary a better way to compensate qualified people may be no-interest mortgages, free tuition, and free healthcare might be more beneficial. But again, who qualifies? I think it is impossible to say because you are Black you are owed something. Thomas Sowell might have something to say about that. Do we give Black wealthy people reparations? Just because someone is Black it is impossible in this country to say that they were somehow harmed.

Some people call it a transfer of wealth. If it is true that a very small percentage of the people own the vast majority of the wealth in the country, it cannot possibly amount to a transfer of wealth, for us as a people. The fundamental problem is that we are looking at this issue, as if we functioned as a group, which we don't, because we don't, cash payments would be the simplest why to handle the situation. All the talk about what it will or should do for us as a whole, is senseless. There is no way to insure that would or can happen. Those who would like land can come together with their reparations payments and purchase it collectively. The government could oversee the sale, to insure that it is a fair deal. You can bet all kinds of people, will be looking for ways to get some of this new found spending power from Black people. It is a messed up situation those who have been pushing/working to get reparations for decades have not done much or been effective enough, in getting us as a people to take the issue seriously and work on it and prepare ourselves for it. Then we have the Johnny come lately s, who want to position themselves as being the authorities on the issue. 1. Payroll tax-exempt for 10 years 2. 25000.00 grant to do home improvements or pay down mortgage 3. Free college education 4. 250 a month for children to have a future for the next 10 years. Don't study for to long because the topic might go back on the shelf. Get it done asap.

What about buying a home for people on housing so they can pay mortgage not just help the ones with a head start all of us or none of us . That’s how they take care of there race. 250 is way to low they owe each Black American 350,000 each a person could take care of a lot and make business decisions banks etc think big . Make it grow now they want to give reparations when the dollar value is meaningless for us now.

@@tbn8462 I totally agree with you. However, most individuals do not want Black people to have anything. The government is not going to give us the maximum 😒 unfortunately 😔. We have to strive for something trying to go too big will leave us with nothing. Yes, the 25000.00 grant can go towards buying a house as well.

Asking people if they think they should get reparations is irrelevant insulting and insensitive to the reality of the past plus present time. Reparations should be paid in every aspect of its existence, everything should be included so many things was done to set us back even until this moment, all we’ve tried and do was railroaded and destroyed. After building a country that we wasn’t allowed openly to compete developed and grew our economy and created strong community in because it was attacked and burned so what’s the question 🙋🏾‍♀️about ? We have some people skipping and jumping from the point it’s a requirement and it’s owed period.
