Replace BROKEN Eye on Hydraulic Cylinder for CAT D10 Dozer | Machining, Welding, Milling

This video is a job we did to replace the broken eye on a hydraulic cylinder rod for a Caterpillar D10 Dozer Ripper Lift. The eye was completely torn apart and our customer requested the eye to be replaced. This shows the step by step process to replace the eye on the hydraulic cylinder rod including machining, welding, milling & boring. We also install the new bushing by shrink fitting with liquid nitrogen but that doesn't go to plan so we move on to press fitting with our 150T tonne hydraulic press. The job is completed with a clean and paint job. What do you think of the finished part?

Though Canada is also a strange Country as far as Europeans are concerned, Roads have Speed Limits in Kilometers per Hour but if you ask someone how far away is from here, your answer 9 time out of 10 will be "It's Hours from here in that direction (for example if you're in Windsor Ontario and you ask someone how far is it to Toronto , they'll probably tell you it's 5 or 6 hours (depending on where in Toronto you want to go) East of here...

Request/suggestion: your vids give us insights into craftsmanship, tool mastery, and process knowledge. There is an aspect in addition to these skills, I believe, that identifies the truly exceptional, which you happened to allude to in this segment-- organization. If you can't find what you need when you need it, everyone suffers. You gave time to explain the single rough head blank you keep on hand to be ready for all possible customer needs. If you would, I know I would appreciate getting access into the tool drawers and inventory shelves. Storing all those small cutting heads, the drill bits, welding tools and supplies, those tools that get deployed and then put away, material stock, etc. present a real problem to anyone who values efficiency. Reaching into a tool drawer has none of the ASMR of a bit cutting metal on a lathe, and in editing for time and storytelling what your shelves hold doesn't scream to be included. Nonetheless.....

Other side likely has 2 thicker bearing blocks, and then a thick plate chassis joining them. Likely it will still break at the eye, or the pin will break first.

It's probably a VERY good thing these things tend to break at the eye... Can you imagine just how expensive it would be if the Rod broke...then you'd be replacing the rod and likely re-barreling the cylinder at the same time...

We DO NOT use the Imperial System in the US! We started our own set of Units back when the Imperial System was based on the length of the King's pecker and how much wine the Queen could drink in a day, and long before the Smelly Folk invented a new system for measuring guillotine blades! *Rebellious Huff! We have nothing to do with Imperial things! It's called USC, the US Customary System of units, and for most of its existence most of its units differed from the Imperial System, including the Banana, I mean Inch. But a few years back they agreed, and both the USC inch and the Imperial inch were shifted slightly and met in the middle so they now match. But they still have funny ways to measure beer...

From Winnipeg: I never really cared for the centering dowel (eye to cylinder rod repair). I found that the initial tack weld tended to pull off square. I instead elected to use threaded rod or a long setscrew to mitigate unwanted movement.(especially when re-using the original eye)

Those Pig blankets are great for soaking up just about anything. I don`t know if that is the brand name down under but here in the U.S. that is what they are called. I noticed you wrapped the ram in one when you were banding it to the pallet. Pig is the name brand for a whole slue of absorption materials, I guess because they are gluttonous about soaking up assorted liquids. Really enjoy your videos because you truly are a master craftsman at what you do. My father has been standing at a lathe. He cleaned rollers, straightened them out, mixed rubber, and laid it on the roller, then heat-treated them so that the rubber got the right hardness, for printing newspapers and magazines. The rollers were so large that he had a crane to lift them around. Yet he was so strong that many people were afraid of him. I have always been proud of haml. Unfortunately lost him on December 21, 2018.

We’ve had Gilbert the wombat back in this week , we were making bands for a catalytic converter he asked what it was for told him it’s for our Toyota Tesla pickup to clean the emissions up from the motor , he said that’s good looking after the environment fingers said he’s not to bright he’s been to university fingers asked what did he study how to be a dud bulb for a dark room , we put up with him for the entertainment value,, nice job you fellas have a nice day

Loved the banana ruler. It was hilarious. Carl, I enjoy the channel and Homie and Karen's video skills really keep it interesting and fun. I do hope that you continue to get enough varied repairs coming in so that people won't be like, "eh. Another cylinder rod eye replace. I think I'll skip this one." I think that a large percentage of people will watch regardless, but I'm just thinking of other channels that do the same thing over and over to the point that they decide to vary things up by showing how to clean a vice.

As an "Old Navy Man" engineer type... Cats who could do this in the middle of the Pacific were Heros!!!! Trust me... breaking down out there from a sheared shaft, ate up pump rings, or potable water pump shaft seal area being chewed up... the MR's were Heros to us all!!! I must say... yours is the Only channel I Immediately "Like" the video before even watching it... because they're that interesting to this old Navy Man! PS... That was some nice machining and welding right there Kurtis. So, when can we buy Banana Rulers? Cause I'd really like to have one! (or a few in different sizes)! Funny stuff with the Liquid Nitrogen fail too, for a sec i thought the bushing had gone right thru and shattered on the ground..... Eeeeeek!.

I have found making tape measures out of Elastic is great for those who are easily confused between metric and imperial, if they don't streatch the tape they can measure in cm, if they stretch the tape they can measure in bananas.

Just saying "thanks" once again for your great content. I was confused about the connecting pin/spacer, as that wasn't really explained well in the video. Usually you are excellent at explaining your reasons and methodology, so that was an unfortunate miss. I read down the comments below and saw you mentioned that the piston rod was already machined way too short. Do you think that one of the previous breakages had actually damaged the end of the rod where it connects, so the last repairer just machined the whole end off?
