Repair a Damaged CAT 631 Scraper Hydraulic Cylinder Rod | Machining, Boring & Welding

This video is a job we did to repair a damaged hydraulic cylinder rod and eye for a Caterpillar 631 Wheel Tractor Scraper apron hydraulic cylinder. The rod has scratching and the chrome is damaged so needs to be replaced. The cylinder rod eye is also out of shape and needs to be reclaimed to fit the bushing. To start, we machine and part the eye off the cylinder rod before reclaiming the eye by boring out in our milling machine, welding up and boring back out to spec. We also install the new bushing by press fitting in our 150T tonne hydraulic press. We machine up the new cylinder rod using 3” inch diameter induction hardened chrome bar. We need to machine both ends of the cylinder rod, the first end we are machining to fit the piston and cutting the external thread for the nut. The other end of the rod we also machine to fit the original rod eye, which is then MIG welded on to complete.

- BM-63VE Milling machine
- HMP-150T Hydraulic press
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

Having the lathe with a large bore throat like yours is a real blessing for sure. I am really impressed with having so much stock on hand. Hi there, just a friendly advice. if you blow air on a downward fashion when boring the rats nest will always go to the bottom, giving you zero hassle and zero chance to scar the bored portion of the part with loose chips. Hey mate thanks for always supporting the vids! Would probably be alright for DIY home projects, we scrap it for quality control reasons could have fracturing through the chrome along with the other damage but for shits and giggles would be alright. Shoot us an email will see what we can do 😎👍

So how do you prevent a bow occurring in that shaft when you're doing a heavy, mid-point weld like that ? I'd think you'd end up with deflection at some point during the welding process.

Hey mate the spigot being pressed fit keeps it aligned and welding with alternate start stop positions to avoid heat pulling the material. 😎👍

Back when I was laying a lot of bead, we'd peen the hell out of new weld, or use needle guns to take the stress out of the weld while it was still hot. I'm guessing induction hardened 4140 might be a bit less prone to stress deflection, but there must be some issue with displacement sometimes.

Hey mate yeah on larger dia rods when heat is sucked out quicker we do use the needle scaler to avoid stress fractures. This sort of job it's not necessary

You did a beautiful job adding weld material to the eye. As for the rod. It was beyond warped. I actually laughed when I saw your dial indicator dancing. Even though I will never ever get to use these skills I enjoy learning how these things are repaired I never learnt to weld but really appreciate how its all done and the different methods of rebuilding the inside of eyes etc so thanks for teaching me new skills. What I appreciate is the attention to detail that you take to make sure everything is correct before you start the process of repairing the damaged item

Ive been in the rebuilding business for 45 years. It’s great to see a young fella like you carrying on the good ways. Old style repairs on conventional machines. Seems to be dying out these days, with all the new people only capable of running computerized machines. Take away the computer and not many of them have any skill left. Thanks from canada.
