I really appreciate the fact that you post videos like this. Not a whole lot of videos on Main Drive gear bearings and seals Could you use an Arbor press to press the bearings and seal in?? If so, what capacity do u think a 1 ton capacity would work?

Glad you like the videos. Yes a 1 ton arbor press will work for pressing it the bearings and seal. I would recommend you get the tool for both. It sets the bearings and seal at the correct depth. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.

I always spend the money on specialty tools cause it makes the job clean and easy, and you're already saving thousands working on it yourself.. might aswell buy tools that will make the job easier and cleaner It's weird because I tool apart a 5 speed out of a 96 Electra Glidecand didn't have to press the shafts out of the trap door to remove all of the gears off of the shafts unlike on this transmission you're working on

Yep Harley loves to change things up every few years. The trans in the video has bigger bearings in the door and they have to be pressed in and out unlike the earlier 5 speeds.

Weather can change fast 80 on Wednesday 70 on Thursday 50 on Friday 18 with snow Saturday . still have the snow this morning 20 f out doors . I use a blind hole bearing puller and press them out . Beating on a Gear can turn into a disaster.

Hi! Question if installing the bearing while in trans,can you heat main shaft a little to ease bearing in?

Thanks for the question, I have never heated the bearing. What I used to do is put the bearing in the freezer overnight and when ready to install heat the case a little and the bearing will almost drop right in. Thanks for watching.

My bearing race had moved into my inner seal I used a flat jawl race Puler to separate the two and get enough room in between them for me to use the factory Harley race puller I went to replace the seal inside the main drive gear and the needle bearing inside is almost perfectly flush with the deepest part of the beveled part of the main gear did my maingear move or did the needle bearing walk itself out and what could I do to fix either one

Thanks for the question, I'm assuming this is a 5 spd trans. The only time I've ever seen the needle bearings out that far has been if the inside of the drive gear has been damaged or the needle bearing was installed incorrectly. Off the top of my head I don't remember how many thousands the needle bearing needs to installed so that it seats. Where the needle bearing rides is polished and smooth and where it seats inside is not and you can feel the difference if you can get your pinky in the to feel. If the bearing has moved out you'll never be able to seat the 5th gear seal and have a hell of a oil leak. The main drive gear really can't move out because that seats against the case. I hope this helps you.

@@tinkeringwithharleys I had the same problem and used the race installer tool and a piece of pipe i ground down to fit the outside of the bearing and worked it back in. I went in about 0.400 a little more than spec, how it will be ok.
