What a great recommendation! Just wish it had a print function built in, otherwise the interface is the most intuitive out of all the open source options.

This is NOT an option. It's payware, it's hosted "on someone else's computer" (end-to-end doesn't matter), and if you can't self-host. You're better off using NextCloud, writing markdown (.md) text files editable by anything including GUI editors, or using note taking software like Zettlr or QOwnNotes which both natively use future-proof, non-proprietary markdown text files. It's not secure unless it's 100% on your property. This is the legal reality.

What a horrible replacement. The Only feature I hoped for in this program is hand drawing via stylus. It doesnt seem to be a thing, so why even bother? Just use jopling, nexcloud or even obsidian. There is a destinct lack of true note taking programs with stylus or drawing, we dont need yet another boring rich text editor.

My thoughts exactly. Support for notes or drawings as well as markup attachments with a stylus. This app would be utterly useless to me. If you're only going to use a cross-platform glorified word processor, use OnlyOffice or something.

Obsidian in itself doesn't have stylus support. And you must actually activate community plugins and install the Obsidian-Excalidraw plugin.

For OneNote users, a strong upside is that it is like OneNote. They are not the kind of people who likely even know what markdown is, so this is a good alternative for them I suppsoe. For a power user, too many downsides, not much in upsides.

Obsidian itself is only free proprietary software.

It requires react and electron and it is not fully open source. only the client is open source. the server is not open source, so you can't self-host this on your own server. 2/10.

The server is open source and the code is available right now on github - I was just browsing it. What you can't do is set the client to use the self-hosted server yet. That's the next milestone as they say they were finalizing their API.

@@espressomatic If it takes over 2 years to add a feature that should have been available since day one, I can only assume the server they are running themselves is not the same server on github. I smell a rat.
