Thanks for the needle nose pliers and the piston notch tip. I just did my 2015 Kia Rio Hatchback. Brakes lasted 64k miles.

You can buy a Brake Caliper Piston Rewind Tool off of Ebay. They do also have a Brake Caliper Piston Rewind Cube Tool.

2014 Rio here, rear brakes shot with only 22k. Same thing, inner pads worn as well as them being uneven and worn at an angle. Grease the pins and cross my fingers. I had a kit from harbor freight I picked up a couple years ago for my saab 9-3, simple piston die kit that spins the piston easily. The kit was only $30 and has saved me a lot of time with these types of pistons that need to rotate w/ pressure to retract. Much easier than trying to hold pliers part way open and apply pressure at the same time rotating. Thx for the vid.

Read my reply to Gilbert who made the video. I bet his caliper is hanging up or the one side is not functioning correctly. This is what happens when one brake pad is wearing out.

If only 1 pad is wearing down then that means your caliper piston is hanging up or caliper side is not functioning correctly. Better rebuild the caliper or buy a new one. And you better have the rotor(s) turned if the one brake pad has worn down to the metal.

With a lot of driving to other states my rear pad we're shot dead at 91,000 and knowing me I bought the best brakes....always buy good shit lol but at 91,000 miles, doing 3,000 miles oil changes with mobile 1 oil and WIX Performance oil filter the car is running strong never had a problem with the car just keep good maintenance and it will run forever

Kia Rio uses floating calipers and the calipers hardware needs to be lubed including under the rubber boots where you bolt the calipers to. the calipers should slide back and forth when bolted up. Sometimes rear disc brakes like this have issues with in board pad wear due to the Piston not being fully released and slightly dragging on the rotors. After cleaning or replacing the rear brake hardware and pads if this problem happens again you should replace the calipers in pairs. Good job on the pad install, from the video I see you only missed lubing the sliders under the rubber boots where you bolt the calipers to.

Thanks for the video! I had to replace the rear brake pads in my kia rio 2013 as well...and same issue the left side one was completely wore out and the right one pretty much intact. what could be causing this? A car this new should not have this kind of issue. I guess that the piston does not retract properly, cause i could hear the clank even when I was accelerating. Thanks again

Seems awfully early to replace rear brakes, what kind of warranty does Kia have? It looks like the inner pad was worn unevenly, could there be a problem with the caliper? Also, when the inner pad is worn and the outer isn't, thats usually caused by the slide pins not having enough grease, causing them to stick. Make sure to pull them out of their little boots and grease them up as well!

Thanks man! I spent an hour trying to figure it out before I surrendered and watched your video. Then I did it in like two minutes per side. ps. you should use a tool to cut the video a bit. You're repeating yourself a lot, which makes it harder to listen to. ps. I bought my Rio 1.4 in march 2012, and by winter the front discs were overheated and bent and the handbrake always seemed to hang on one side if left engaged over night. According to a dealer I spoke to in Germany, by the beginning of 2014 everyone with a Rio was comming to her to get new rear brakes. And no alternative parts were available. Probably still aren't. They're terribly overpriced, by at least they're also terribly poor quality.

My 2015 Rio has 22,000 miles and the same thing is happening to the back brakes. I have been in contact with Kia about a possible issue with the back brakes on these cars for something that might need a recall.

Its just the caliper hanging up. Just rebuild it or buy a new one. They are very easy to rebuild.

The brakes on my 2013 Rio hatch are driving me nuts. By the time the car had 25k miles they were completely fried. The dealership wanted 850 $ to replace the rotors, calipers and pads on all four corners but after I brought up how insane it was for the brakes to be that worn out after so little mileage they decided they could settle for 200$. Now the car has around 45k miles and I feel a significant loss in braking power and I can litteraly smell them burning up when I drive. The frustrating part is they are still asking for 850$ to replace everything and they say the brakes are not covered under warranty because I clean my brakes myself instead od paying them 100$ twice a year for "brake service". Sounds more like f@#*ing wallet service to me.

My 2015 Kia Rio had 114K miles and the brake pads still had 1/2 the pads in good condition. Replaced them anyways while I had the calipers off. Now my car stops on a dime like it did when I first rolled it off the dealership parking lot.

Wow , i changed my brakes at 130.000 km fr. and bck , the dealer wanted to change them at 20,000 km , i laughed , how can manufacturer brakes wear so fast , i really don't know why people get sucked in by guarentees , by the way you are unsafe , get the proper tools .

Thats just a gimmick to get you to have a brake job done when you don't need it. Its just like Kia says to have your engine flushed out by having them spray in the throttle body to get the carbon out. Kia and many other manufactures of cars are using GDI engines which means the gas is injected right into the cylinder and not behind the valves. Seafoam is ok, but I always use CRC Intake Valve & Turbo Cleaner. When you use this stuff if will make your care jump, pop, hesitate and may sound like you got rocks in your engine but it get the garbage out. It will make your car smoke for the first 30 seconds or so when you accelerate.
