Excellent, I plan to replace my struts on my 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Coupe soon; this vid seems to cover all the of its procedure. Kudos!

Thanx soo much for the video!! I was in the same spot with the dampener and couldn't get things lined up with my crappy clamps, so I came here and read about threading a rod through the damper!! I used a piece of standard 3/8 rod and some washers and it worked exactly as it was probably designed to work!! I was ready to leave the darn things out!! Thanx again for this video!!

Good video! But folks, check the box the new struts come in first. It includes the special bolt required to compress the rubber dampeners. Half hour per side to get the tiny pebbles trapped out prior to getting the bolts started. Real pain!

Well I liked it, and also liked the music--a welcome break from the damned rap on all other videos!

At 2:10 minutes into the video you mention the "Damper". This damper is under intense pressure and must be "C" clamped or a bolt run down into it. One of these dampers released, as I was changing struts and I used my face to slow the "L" bracket as it shot across my backyard. It could have killed me. PLEASE BE CAREFUL. I nearly lost an eye.

Also, it's not 100% clear in the video but it seems that you may be missing the spring pads that go underneath the fiberglass monoleaf. You'll want to pop those in there!

Would be nice if you would have mentioned what size sockets were need for the two bottom bolts.

See his other video. Or for anyone else dropping by, a large 15/16" wrench may work, or a 24 mm. (w-body vehicles newer than 1994 may be 21 mm ymmv)

My 1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme is going to get the rear struts changed soon because the clunking noise coming from the rear driver side is driving me crazy.

@@zakwood8755 Yes it did fix the clunking. Just had one go bad again last week on the passengers side rear. Clunking was driving me crazy. Installed a new set of Monroe this time around. The Gabriel Ultra struts lasted about five years.

I don't quite understand what you mean buy "bolt" down the dampener. You have to take the only two bolts out to get the strut out. I cannot get this thing back together.
@ScottDamery
@ScottDamery 10 жыл бұрын
There should be a dampener on the opposite side of the bolts and it has a place to put a bolt down the top to BOLT it to the frame while you take the other 2 bolts out as described at 2:09 if you don't secure the dampener then you will be like me and need to get a big clamp to hold the dampener while you replace the bolts

+Scott Damery So true, and you are so right to emphasize how much easier the job will go, IF, you can get the bolt to thread into the fitting -- likely to be quite rusted and corroded. Good for you that you could get it to work when you later did the driver side. No luck for me thus far.... and like NoDak, I too am stuck trying to get the "8" dampener spring to fit down back under the dampener bracket. Your video isn't quite clear on just how you did this. Yet I gather from your comment here that you were first using the 8 inch clamp to hold down the dampener bracket (and dampener itself). AFTER you managed to squeeze that down, and keeping it from contorting off-line, THEN you line up the holes on the dampener, bracket, the strut and knuckle. (whew!) So far, I haven't been able to pull this off. Have a hunch though my challenge may be made worse by too much residual tension. Have seen guidance elsewhere (via the old w-body forum) suggesting we ought to use a jack (with wedge boards) to raise the transverse fiberglass spring a bit, just to the inside of the knuckle. By contrast, it appears that you merely used a jack to lift just underneath the wheel itself. Was it that simple for you? (or did you also release pressure on the transverse "leaf"?) Thanks.

I did not realize how serious this damper was. I tried to compress it as you are describing and the lower "L" bracket hit me in the face nearly taking my eye out. Deep gash in my face and blood everywhere. It could have killed me or anyone standing within 20 feet. I ended up taking the whole thing to the hardware store. We ran a bolt down inside and compressed it. I "C" clamped the other side but it was still dangerous.

I believe this is more accurately a strut and coil installation a.k.a. quick strut. The strut portion can be bought seperately.
