I had some noise coming from the rear diff of my 4Runner for a while. I know there is basically no pinion preload so I decided to swap in a spare differential I had. A while back I had to replace one wheel bearing in a pinch and I used a cheap no-name bearing. I decided to be proactive and replace both sides with OEM Koyo bearings from Marlin Crawler so that I wouldn't have to worry about the cheap one crapping out or the old one giving up.

Excellente! I've done a lot of minor repairs, including an engine/tranny swap on a '99 and totaled body removal of an '00, but never worked on any axles and my '89 needs a carrier seal and at first the job looked a whole lot tougher. Awesome. Thank You Sir. ;-)

Alex, I have 3 Toyota's including a 86 4x4 that I am holding on to. However, I have a 91 Toyota Previa and I was changing out my diff fluid today and noticed the inside of my right wheel was caked with oil. So I pulled the hub off and there was no oil in the drum or on my brake pads. There was a little on the spring that holds the shoes together. What I was wanting to know is do you think I could simply take the axle out and replace the axle seal only and be good. I don't have a press or the homemade tool to press on/off the bearings so I was hoping to just do the axle seal only. I do have 220k on it so I know putting bearings on is a good idea. Just don't have those tools. Please help.

@TheAlexManVideos 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if the Previa axle is the same design as my 4Runner axle. But if it is, the seal which is installed at the end of the axle housing can be replaced without removing the wheel bearings from the axle shaft or the bearing retainer. Just pull the axle assembly out of the axle housing (4 nuts and any brake lines or brake cables) and the seal can be easily accessed and replaced.

Great video! I found this as I'm looking to identify a part on the rear axle of an 87 4Runner. I looks almost like a sway bar....but it is attached to some kind of brake valve on the passenger side frame. What is that contraption? My son and I are buying this 4Runner as a project and when looking at it I can't identify what that part is. Any idea? Thanks!!

It's the Load Sensing Proportioning Valve (LSPV). It changes brake bias as a result of how loaded down the truck is. Sometimes they leak or seize and stop working. Some people delete them because they don't know how it works or how to fix it but I would strongly recommend it not be deleted. Replacements are still available from Toyota for only slightly more than the parts required to delete it, and the system when functioning is superior to any manual proportioning valve.

Hi. Could you share specifics on the fluid you used in the diff ? Thanks
@TheAlexManVideos
@TheAlexManVideos 6 жыл бұрын
Marlin Crawler recommends Redline Synthetic Shockproof gear oil. That's what I use. But any old GL-5 gear oil around 90 weight will work just fine for a daily driver if you don't feel like spending that much or you just need to get rolling.

hello alex, i am going to to this job very soon to fix a leak on my diff and i wanted to ask you if there's a paper gasket or just silicone between the 2 parts of the diff. the wide of the bead of silicone you applied lasted long or you recommend a more wider one?, thanks
@TheAlexManVideos
@TheAlexManVideos 5 жыл бұрын
Factory installs use a paper gasket between the differential and axle housing. You can use one if you want, just a lot of cleaning if you ever remove it again. I like the RTV. Permatex Ultra Gray is what I use. I've had no issues with leaks. A 1/8 to 3/16 inch bead is all you need. People sometimes forget that the little bead they put on squishes out when you bolt it together and actually spans the entire sealing surface. If you put too much on there it just squeezes out and falls off inside the axle housing. Probably not a problem for an axle, but similar practice on an engine can lead to oil passages being clogged with little spaghetti noodles of silicone.

TheAlexManVideos thanks for your response, i recently finished the job, the diff was really heavy! . Used the oem paper gasket with silicone i hope it works well

YOU Da Man, Alexman! Need an assistant? LOL! Thanks a lot. Only the inner and outer seals, that o-ring and the bearing need replacement, and the collar/retainer is reusable, correct?
@TheAlexManVideos
@TheAlexManVideos 6 жыл бұрын
Collar can be re-used if there's no wear groove from the seal.

Your videos are very well done. I have a leaky rear wheel seal. I guess I need to press out the bearing to change the darn thing?
@TheAlexManVideos
@TheAlexManVideos Жыл бұрын
The outer wheel seal requires pressing out the axle. The inner wheel seal can be replaced by just removing the axle and backing plate from the axle housing. The inner wheel seal does the real oil sealing.

alex, can you give the sizes of the makeshift SST to make one here?, thanks
@TheAlexManVideos
@TheAlexManVideos 6 жыл бұрын
It's sized to fit over the backing plate studs and axle tube with a flange at the top to sit on the table of a press. Not one thing on there was measured before being built. Just build it to fit.

So the wheel are essentially held on by a circlip?
@TheAlexManVideos
@TheAlexManVideos 7 жыл бұрын
The axle shaft is pressed into the bearing, then the circlip keeps it from walking out. Stronger than a C clip axle.

@TheAlexManVideos
@TheAlexManVideos 3 жыл бұрын
My first tool (shown in this video) did that too. Just have to bend the studs back carefully. I've since made a new tool by using an actual Toyota bearing pocket from a junkyard backing plate and welding it in place on my puller tool.
