@CorradoAlley5 жыл бұрын
if you think the R32 is a lifetime keeper you should go ahead now and buy all those parts and store them away for the future. if you don't need them they will be a good investment. I've learned that when I order parts like this for my corrado to order twice as much as I actually need and squirrel the spares away.

I finally sold my mk4 after 18 years in 2019 and bought one of the mk7 TDIs. Watching you replace trim on your mk4 takes me back. There are times I really wish I hadn't upgraded, though I had just shy of 400K miles on it. It was time to upgrade for sure, but boy did I love that car.

The soft touch coating on some of my mk4 interior plastic items was so bad that it started pealing off. After pealing away as much as I could, I finished off the tenacious parts with isopropyl alcohol and blue shop towels. After removing the soft touch from the plastic trim, it now has a piano black finish. Much better looking, more resilient and a lot more affordable.

20:50. The "Secret Compartment" used to be one of the worst cup holders ever. Not only was it flimsy, but when in use, it blocked the upper push buttons and the radio controls. There was another one on the back of the center console for the rear passengers. I've taken several of them apart and I'm just stunned at the over engineering that went into them, all for nothing. VW got tired of replacing them under warranty so they deleted them altogether, replacing them with a blank panel in the rear and a useless door in the front. 18:12. The Mark 4 started with black struts. Went to silver struts in the later cars. 19:35. I take the metal parts off for two reasons. Sometimes I keep them for later use. The other reason is so that I can recycle both the plastic and the metal if they're separated.
@chrstphrr5 жыл бұрын
I liked the old style back cup holder, it seemed to work better, and could actually hold *two* cups, unlike the revised/late Mk4 lower console setup of 2 in front + 1 in the back. Been wanting to Frankenstein the older rear cup holder setup with a late style lower console to regain it all. Passats and Audis of that same era, and much later, used that old front cupholder in the rear fold down arms, same cartridge. Worked better for the purpose, because there wasn't a radio to block/spill drinks on.
@Kot10265 жыл бұрын
I pretty like the front double cupholder, it really does it's job, but... Yeah, it blocks the radio... The back for the rear passengers is less comfortable. And the plastic trims are a nightmare to reassemble; even if they are not broken, you definately would break them at the first time...

On my mk4 2.0L all the "soft touch" plastics were falling apart and sticky so I ended up taking it all apart and use throttle body cleaner as well as alcohol and got most of it all off, then sanded and prepped it for paint and it looks mint, good was to save some money instead of buying expensive brand new ones
@Swordie1005 жыл бұрын
Well trim does make your car look a lot better.. I usually pick trim up from the wreckers if it is in good condition. Same with rubbers/window scrapers/plastic fasteners. Sometimes depending on the part I don't even have to pay for it. :) Keeps me coming back for bigger stuff too. Oh btw Charles, the high pitch noise/clunk when I close my doors actually was caused by the horizontal crash tube not being fastened. I removed the screw months earlier in preparation for paint...... *slaps face*

Funny you mentioned the rattling ashtray driving you bonkers. Same issue with me and my Mk1. Mine bothered me so much I yanked it and built a cover plate to cover the hole in the dash, then added some gauges and electrical switches to it. Definitely more usable then just the previous rattle trap. The R32 is looking great! Betcha the all the new pieces make it feel less like a beater, and more like the econo-supercar it is. To refinish this 'soft touch' plastic, I've found that 90% isopropyl alcohol and a stiff nylon brush melts the old finish off. To re-coat, the SEM line of refinishing products works great. Plastic prep, adhesion promoter and SEM trim black work best to replicate the OEM finish.

To save money, lots of the trim can be found in a salvage yard too, at much less cost, but not as new. If you're patient, you could find most of the trim in good condition that way, and maybe have to spring for some brand new parts. Another source can be people parting out their mk4s that have been in accidents, or the engine/transmission died out. And some of the parts on a Golf, Jetta, or New Beetle are the same, regardless of doors on the body, like the carpet.

@@rendaddy_ Worth noting that the earlier Mk4 don't need this clip. In around 2002-3 they changed over to the curtain airbags, and this clip -IS- needed on both the A and C pillars. I've removed them using a 90-degree bent pick, the clips are two part, and the one piece can be pulled near straight out. Also... try to go to a salvage yard, find a mk4 with the same A-pillar as yours, and practice removing it, before you attempt yours. No one really has pictures online, or a video, because of the confined space. It's a learn by doing trick for removal.

I will be doing this in the fall most likely

@@HumbleMechanic thank you that would be a good one. The dealers here would likely charge quite a premium for the HVAC duct assembly supplied and installed...probably half the value of the vehicle as is I'd guess. It is an annoying failure, but with 18 years of service probably a reasonable life. Really enjoy your videos. They help me alot in keeping my wifes Typ 1J0 up and running! Much appreciated.

Hey Charles, I can’t find a part number for those parcel cover hook-deals. One flew off into another dimension and I can’t find one now. Do they even sell them?
@HumbleMechanic5 жыл бұрын
The ones on the hatch or the one of the cover?
@progmanmike5 жыл бұрын
On the hatch, they’re like pegs. (On an A3 hatch)

No cupholders above the radio in the US?
@HumbleMechanic5 жыл бұрын
On the earlier mk4 they had them. So silly. Haha
@MrMathijs875 жыл бұрын
HumbleMechanic That sucks, i’m really glad i have them in my Bora Wagon (Jetta in your case), i use them mostly as a phone holder though.. I also installed the brushed alu pieces, so much nicer than the wood! On my car a couple of the same trim pieces are also busted sadly...

You could replace the secret storage compartment for a pop out cup holder
@chrstphrr5 жыл бұрын
You could swap the hinged cover Charles has on certain kinds of cup holder frames - there are two styles I've encountered, and the pins/hinges are in different, incompatible locations. But... notice he has the late-style lower console with two cup holder spaces built in. That is a near direct swap in part on the 1999.5-2003-ish range that didn't have it. That top cup holder location is great for spilling stuff on your radio... but people have repurposed that cupholder space for custom made phone holders, etc.

Bought a Jetta few years ago. Soon as it hit 100k miles, the "plastic parts" started to break and the engine started to consume oil. Starting to think I've made a dire mistake.
