Very cool. I came home for the big box store with the right ballast, but I was stumped by the new one having two blue wires. I was *this close* to calling our electrician to have three new LED fixtures installed to replace our T12 fluorescents when I stumbled onto your video. God bless the internet. In the old days, I would've gone to the library hoping to find a periodical (for you young folks, thats a magazine) that had an article addressing this subject. Thank you for posting this. After a week of research, I found your video. Great explanation and I finally understood what you were saying. My old ballast (45 yrs. old) only had four wires, Black, white, red, blue. The first ballast I bought had 8 wires including the yellow. I could not figure it out, but after watching your show, I realized I had the wrong new ballast. I went and bought the correct ballast and now everything is working. One suggestion: show a written diagram showing what you mean, it will help those of us who have trouble remembering things.

I recently replaced my old GE electronic ballast with a new Advanced Signify electronic ballast, but my hot and neutral wire connections are different than your video. The hot and neutral wires are tied into another t12 lamp and both sets of wires are tied together with the 18 guage black and white wires that go to the nearest tombstone on one end of my fixture. Then another pair of these black and white wires exit the same tonestone and go to the ballasts' black and white wires. Lights just flicker. New bulbs have been tested with sister fixture, tombstones replaced and I replaced new ballast with another new one with same results.

Thank you for your video. It really helped! Once we got it wired correctly the lights came on. However, my lights flicker, whereas with the bad ballast, it would buzz and then the lights would go out. Any suggestions for next troubleshooting steps?
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 5 жыл бұрын
There are many reasons a fluorescent can flicker. 1. A bad ballast (we have that one covered). 2. bad bulbs 3. A loose wire 4. A bad breaker 5. Bad bulb connection. Additionally, if the ballast is the incorrect one for your luminaire then this could cause it to flicker. Check all of those. Hope this helps.
@wendyjackson9939
@wendyjackson9939 5 жыл бұрын
@@CountryLivingExperience Thank you for the quick response. Bulbs are new, so that one is covered as well. For loose wires, that could be in the wire nut connections or the tombstones? Bad breaker, hopefully not, but this will be the last resort step. Bad bulb connection, just clean with alcohol? Thanks again!
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 5 жыл бұрын
Loose wire could be anywhere so it's best to check them all. Bad bulb connection...might be best to shut the power off and use a fine wire brush in the tombstone connectors. Were you able to get the correct ballast? The numbers match?
@wendyjackson9939
@wendyjackson9939 5 жыл бұрын
@@CountryLivingExperience I'm pretty sure the ballast is correct. My brother picked it up, but I will double check it. I will work on those troubleshooting steps. The black and white wires weren't quite long enough to connect to the power source, so we cut a small section to make an extension. We'll have to look at that as well as the connectors. I really appreciate your help and the quick responses. I will keep you posted on my DIY repair. :)

Thanks
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 4 жыл бұрын
It is hard to tell by just reading your dilemma. One blue goes to the white from the fixture and one blue goes to the black from the fixture. The black one goes to the black from the power (plug) in and the white to the white. Think of it as the ballast interrupting or going between the powered wires in from the plug and the powered wires inside the fixture. Then the red goes to the blue and red on the fixture...all three together. Done. Hope that helps.

I have an 40 year old, fluorescent fixture, single bulb, 48" 40 Watt, T12. The bulb bulb flickers. I did try a new LED bulb. It also flickers just like the old fluorescent bulb. It's even a TYPE A (plug n play) that is supposed to work with any ballast type. I next tried replacing the starter 'fuse', but still had flicker with both the old fluorescent and the new LED bulbs. So, I figure, if not the bulb, and if not the stater - it has to be the ballast... The current ballast has 3 wires: 1 black, & 2 white. What kind of ballast do I buy, and how do I wire it? The ballasts I am seeing for sale have more wires, some blue, some red, sometimes yellow wires too. Is there a ballast with a range of wattages I can buy? Will a ballast support TWO 32 watt bulbs, still support ONE 40 watt bulb?

So why are some running these led's without a ballast?
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 3 жыл бұрын
LED's are different tech. They don't need one but you must have the correct light fixture.

Why is there no yellow wire? I have a yellow wire, as well as, red and blue.
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 5 жыл бұрын
Some luminaires and ballasts are configured differently. The yellow wires are usually the return path to the ballast to complete the circuit. You need a new ballast that is configured in the same way. Take your old ballast to the store and match it’s type and numbers as I mentioned in the video. Hope this helps.

I have power to all 4 pins but only 1 light comes on. Is this a ballast problem?

@@randyjohnson6415 It would depend on how much they cost. It may be more cost efficient to just buy a new light.

@CountryLivingExperience

The blue from the new ballast with the 2 black from the tombstones on the fixture....or/and the second blue from the new ballast to the 2 whites from the tombstones on the ballast. Blue + 2 blacks or whites = 3

I think i have it, iam going to cut one blue short , tape off end. Now iam going to run the other blue to the two whites coming out. Then on the other end, it will be red to red. Then of course white to white and black to black

Don't cut the wire before you test that setup. Each luminaire is different. Could you potentially have the wrong ballast for your fixture?

Will this fix flickering?
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 3 жыл бұрын
It should but flickering could be due to a bad bulb or a poor connection between the bulb and tombstone. Check those first before replacing the ballast as it is the most expensive piece.

6:32 you have Black and white part of the fixture and then 2 blues from the ballast. You then mention "these three". There should be one blue to a black or white and the other blue to the black or white depending on which one was used first. also hard to see because of all the wires. red and blue from other side of fixture to the red is the final step and easy to understand. At 6:32 I think you have attached one blue to a white or black from the fixture and then the second blue to the othern black or white from the fixture. There us not a "These three"? Correct?
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 2 жыл бұрын
There are two tombstones for two bulbs. It will be 3 wires in total that are getting connected at that point....a blue from the ballast, a white from left tombstone, and a white from right tombstone. The other blue will connect to the blacks from each tombstone.

Nice, but your fixtures are wired in parallel, never in series. Some ballasts may power multiple lamps in series, but the fixtures are in parallel - always.
