Thanks for making this video available. I have a replacement movement for a Hermle mantle clock, so it was most helpful to be alerted to the prudence of oiling before it's installed. I've never done this before, so being able to see this helped bring much clarity as to how to go about doing this. The clock in question was inherited nearly 20 years ago and has never kept good time, so it will be nice to have it working.

The was a very helpful video. So glad I found it and watched it prior to replacing the movement in our mantel clock. Many thanks to the man who created it.

Thank you for putting this video together. I am currently working to build a mechanical movement clock. I plan to build the body out of Marble from offcuts that I have collected. I found your video to be very informative. Thankyou from a jack of all trades in Australia

Oh, man. You have saved me from tearing the little bit of hair I have left, out. I got my first Mantel clock today and the chimes were so dull. Now 4 of them are far better. Still a wee bit of adjusting to do, but I’ll get there. The one nearest the door appears to be too long and hits the thick bar that holds the chime rods and when I bend that one, it sticks more. I tried loosening the tiny screw that holds the hammer to its shaft, but it just moved side to side, not back like I wanted, but I was scared I took it off and couldn’t get it back on especially with my shaky left hand lol. I will loosen the chime rod column tomorrow, to see if that helps. Have you ever slid a hammer head along the hammer shaft before?

One thing I've wondered with these balance wheel movements: do you oil the balance wheel as well? If so, how would you do it?
@ClockRepairService5 жыл бұрын
No, we never oil balance wheels. I'm sure some folks do. But having a clean one is important. I haven't thought of doing a video on cleaning one, I might get around to it though.

The floating balance unit should never be oiled. The staffed units should only be served by a qualified technician.

I hope you are still in business and checking these comments.... Do you have experience with Ansonia Brand Clocks from the early 1900's. Please respond regardless.

This is a great video to get experience on clocks. I do have a question. I noticed that some movements like the Kieninger movement are different than the Franz Hermle movement. I've also noticed that the Kineinger movement ticks at twice the speed as most Franz Hermle movements. The differences are in the balance wheel and the gears. Can a Kieninger movement replace a Franz Hermle movement or does a Kieninger have to be replaced by another Kieninger?
@ClockRepairService4 жыл бұрын
Tristan. You can sometimes swap Keininger with Hermle only if the holes in the face line up, which is rare. Chain driven grandfather clocks can, on allot, because you only have 1 hole in the face, however each movement that is weight driven is specific to the weights as well as the length of the pendulum. So if you can get the same replacement its best to do so on both GF clocks as well as wall and mantle clocks.

Why don't clock makers use stainless plates or at least flanged bearing for movements? It would save the customer a lot of money & aggravation. I know they make small sealed bearings.
@bobbartow91556 ай бұрын
I guess so they will wear out so you have to service them or replace them. If you keep them oiled with a good quality oil, like Horace Whitlock Oil they will last for many more years.

@@bobbartow9155 That was my thoughts but I was wondering if I was right. I'm trying to find a Hermle 350-020 hour/snail wheel that's plastic.
