An absolute treat to watch your process to troubleshoot, repair, clean, oil and adjust. Your decades of experience always make it look so simple. Thank you again.

Most people who repair clocks for money seem to want to replace the newer Hermle movements rather than overhaul them because of cost issues - you can replace a 1050-020 for about $400 which is comparable to what they charge for an overhaul so people go with a brand new movement as likely to give more years of service than an overhauled movement. I'm glad you made this video because I've been able to buy several used clocks for not much money with non-working Hermle movements in them and plan to try fixing them myself. The thing that scares me the most is dealing with the balance wheel escapements so I'm glad you discussed that. I'll probably be watching this video again.

Thanks Bozo, This one almost had me stumped. I couldn't believe how much the pivot was bent. This is one of movements Hermle sold that had soft arbors and pivots that were chrome plated. The pivot seemed real soft when I straightened it. Once fixed it kept next to perfect time for a couple of weeks in my shop, the owner is very pleased with it now.

James Martin repairing a clock with a case made by James Martin. Proving that "clock maker" is not just a title. I wonder if that clock might have been moved while it was running and dropped a few inches. Not enough to do visible damage, but enough to bend that pivot and loosen up that support. Who knows?
@jamesmartin53703 ай бұрын
Could be, it ran fine for many years after I built it, then suddenly started stopping from time to time. It took some time finding the defect but its running healthy now....

this clock is beautiful!! love how it has a little music box as well. this is a nice custom adamantine style clock. One thing that does bug me is how the lowest note (of all 8) is one half step higher. It plays at a C instead of the others (tuned into a b major scale). This one was lucky to have the bent pivot point. My triple chime movement is from 1978 and has had a lot happen to it. The spring wasnt held by the BENT pallets and basically unwound its form. Due to me not having everything to overhaul, I was considering either getting a new 1050-020 movement or converting the clock with an entirely different movement (with different face and everything). Maybe a bim bam movement. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Love your video's very informative, i notice you are very careful while handling the clock but you don't wear glove's is there any particular reason for it's not a criticism just curious look forward to your other video's
@jamesmartin53703 жыл бұрын
Thanks You. I've asked myself that question before and struggle with it. In some situations like straightening that pivot in above video, Its almost like I need to be able feel the slight pressures applied to the part to know when its just right. When I started in this business close to 50 years ago, it wasn't an issue, maybe it's an old habit that's tough to break. I've looked around at various gloves, but haven't found any that give the right feel yet. So until I find the right pair, I do my best to handle most of the parts with tweezers. Thanks again.
