Replacing A Delta Shower Cartridge

This replacement technique will work on all delta cartridges 1300/1400, 17 series, 13 and 14 series.
The job itself is not hard. What's hard, is getting over the fear that you can't do this. That's what's actually hard. The moment you conquer that feeling, you will succeed at anything you set your mind to.

Great video! Most realistic one I have seen on doing this repair, as it shows all the struggles I had to go through and how to work through them. Most other videos make it look "easy peasy" and don't even help getting through the first step of trying to get the handle allen bolt loose without stripping it.😂

Great video, thanks. I struggled for quite a while trying to rip the cartridge out of the fixture using a fair amount of force, Channel Locks, etc. along with PB blaster, and WD 40. I mangled the cartridge. Then after some searching online I found your video; I think your idea of applying heat must have did the trick even though I only had a 1500W hair dryer to use. Finally got the cartridge out, cleaned it up, installed a new cartridge, and now it's working great with no leaks. Thanks again!

I had the same problem the other day could not get it out. I bought the Delta 1300 & 1400 Cartridge Puller Removal Tool DT - 2641 and saved me from all this BS. this tool is a must its not cheap but saved me I may keep it . all pros should have this

When the house was built - OR - when bathroom was remodeled. I took the faceplate off and luckily (not removed, or eroded from water damage) there is still a sticker with a date code.

The first thing you should put the ring nut back on, so you don't bend or destroy the housing...... The second thing is they sell a Puller on Amazon. Little expensive $230.... But it sure beats destroying things and replaced the valve assembly Body behind a tile wall..... Now the puller is not perfect because I've had it separate the cartridges leaving the body inside..... But you can take some fine stranded wire Maybe picture frame wire or The Wire out of a bicycle cable.... And you fish it in and back around the stuck body inside. Pulling it out, so you have 2 Braided wires.. Then you take. Your polar assembly and they have the 2 Tightening Screws pins that you would Titan. in and it would catch the cartridge..... Take those out and you fish the braid wire threw the screw holes pulling them tightly and then you screw the puller onto the His valve body assemblyValve body assembly So this will twist the braided wire around the cartridge as you screw the puller assembly onto the body With the puller screwed on to the valve body and the wires Going Out the Out the threaded holes where the twist catch pins would catch the valve body assembly. You pull the 2 cables tightly and lock 2 vice grips on the each side of The Wire pulled tightly and then just use the puller and the pops right out...... Hope it makes sense, but it's super easy...... I don't understand why this company. That makes the puller tool didn't include the Technique. with it because the cartridge is break off. Half the time and you need to do this procedure to pull out the stuck half of the Cartridge.

good idea about the wire. I have the puller, it's useless. 90% of the time, half the cartridge body gets stuck inside the valve body.

Once the stainless steel piece is exposed, you can screw a drywall screw in one of those holes, and then pull straight out on the drywall screw with channel locks.

you can loop wire thru those holes and then attach wire to something you can get a grip on and then yank it out.

One point: Since this faucet turns on from the cold side if the cartridge is upside down it will start on hot water. It will send hot water immediately from the shower head. It should be reversed to the correct direction or the first person will be burned

Just did this tonight and when I was prying it out I bent the outside of the valve so the retainer nut wouldn't thread on

You should try a hole saw to remove the plastic. Then add a depth marker.

I was thinking. I wonder if a slide hammer like ones used for bodywork on cars by screwing it into the now exposed cylinder of the broken cartridge or with some sort of hook attachment that would somehow be able to slipped in behind the broken cartridge and slowly tapping it out with each backward strike of the slide hammer.

if your license and you do this a lot, just invest in a delta, cartridge puller, it might cost a little bit of money, but you don’t have to go through all that nonsense. And if you don’t do a lot of these cartridge changes, then I would say angled needle nose pliers come in handy.

I'd pay any money for a puller that actually worked. Those pullers you talk about will only pull the first half of the cartridge, not the back side.

And thats why I love Moen, with moen positemp cartridges, thats a 15 minute job, sometimes you will have to fight the cartridge for an additional 5 minutes to get it out, or maybe the allen screw to remove the handle gets stripped, it may set you back 20 minutes tops, but 2-4 hours to replace a delta!? Thank God our property doesnt have those 😮‍💨

This was a worst case scenario. Moen cartridges can also get stuck like this one and same technique is used to remove them.

@@utubehandyman maybe their other cartridges, but the positemp ones maximum 35 minutes to replace, I maintain a 600 unit property, easily 700 bathrooms in total, ive personally replaced at least 50 cartridges in almost 3 years, without counting the other ones my coworkers have replaced, even without using the removal tool, just put the philips screw back in, hold it with milwaukee wire strippers as close to the pivot point of the stripper, pull and wiggle with both hands, and slowly it will come out 😎👍🏼

What a shitty design. Good video though... I am totally down with everything presented. Just looking at Delta brand and shaking my head... why!? How!? This plastic thing that WILL HAVE to come out... WILL GET stuck. Thinking... might as well make it brass.

they used to be brass but now everything is plastic. If you change them I'd say every 5 years, they literally pop right out no effort.
