Excellent video , I was feeling nervous trying to do this myself, but now feel confident I can do it alone..excellent suggestion on using a strap wrench instead of a pipe wrench to remove the bonnet as other videos have suggested using a pipe wrench and for using Teflon lubricant, and the handle holding the cartridge to remove it ? another fantastic idea along with using q-tips and vinegar to clean the openings..... the only thing is that I would just do is just to replace the whole cartridge instead of the the washers/springs as I called Delta and they sent me out one for free.. so I am going to try this out .... thanks again !! subscribed !

Thank you, this is the exact one I have but forgot what I had as I did a custom install on my manufactured home from a POS plastic hot and cold valves to a 1 handed valve that I found at a thrift store for $5 bucks in a no name box all the brass parts were there but I had to find the chrome outer parts for it at lowes.. 8 years later and mine is now having a non stop annoying drip from the shower head and was told by a plumber (so called friend) said the whole thing needed to be pulled and replaced for $1800+ NOPE I'll do it myself and look around on KZbin. This looks like this might be the culprit, better a $100 dollar max price cartridge part than ripping out the whole shower and replacing a part that I don't believe needed to be replaced. Thank you..

Good video. Good advice except, I wouldn't recommend removing that large cover plate because it's a bear to find the holes for the screws again. Ask me how I know....I jut finished this job and that was the most difficult part. For one thing, you can't see where the holes are because the plate has them covered. I thought if I connected the hole with the screw through a straw that might work...it didn't. It took about 30 minutes in a hot bathroom before I got those screws into their holes. Ugh. Thanks to everyone who made a video for this job, even my son is proud of me....he didn't have a clue how to do it.

I am an older lady who has done this before and found it a nightmare in removing the cartridge. I ended up using flathead screwdrivers to pry it out. I know. Probably not the best idea but I could not get it out any other way. I love the idea of using the handle. This third time I had to replace the o-rings too and although Delta Faucets sent me the seat and springs under my lifetime warranty they do not send the o-rings. The ones I used were Danco #35 (11/16” O.D. x 9/16” I.D. x 1/16”) which I found at Lowe’s. It won’t hurt to have them on hand in case you need them. I used a silicone grease this time and it made things a lot easier to remove the cartridge today and to reinsert it since I did not have o-rings when I replaced the seat and springs. I didn’t know they were bad at that time and until I replaced them my leak was worse than when I started. I also did not bleed off the water pressure when I went to remove the cartridge and it just popped out with no effort....unfortunately giving me an unwanted shower in the process but I’ll take that shower if I don’t have to fight removing the cartridge. Next time I will cover it with a towel. I really liked your video. I’ve watched several and I wish I would have seen yours before making the repair. It would have saved me a lot of grey hairs....oh wait...that’s all I have on my head.

Thanks for this video! I've been trying in vain to find a cartridge/valve combo that looks like what I have (big valve holes, cartridge with the brass toothy-gear thing at the top) and this looks like it! Do you know the name of the valve or the cartridge? I think the trim kit I have doesn't properly engage with that copper-gear part at the top and a new trim kit I bought came with a cartridge where the water inlet holes are too close together. We just bought the house, and I suspect the trim was replaced but not quite compatible -- it's a Delta Monitor with a separate temp control and it grinds a bit and doesn't stay in place. It's held together with the screw under the temp control cover, and I suspect there's a part missing. Knowing the name of the valve or cartridge would help when I talk to Delta, so any info you can provide is super helpful. Thank you!
@rolandthethompsongunner643 жыл бұрын
If you don’t know the brand if valve you have don’t even attempt this. Many times people will replace the trim kits with different brands. You can’t always go by what the handles say they are. You can replace Delta with Moen, Glacier bay, etc.

@@proclaimliberty2000 Well, I replaced it. Man! That sucker was hard to get out! I had to buy one of those rubber strap wrenches, but it finally came out. What was weird was that the new cartridge had an "H" on it for the hot side of the cartridge, but the old one did not (so that I knew which way to put the new one in). But luckily I reasoned that the hot water symbol on the outer beauty ring was on the left, I figured that that's the way to should go and it turned out to be correct. Funny that they didn't design it so that it could only go in one way. Total cost about $50 ($40 for the cartridge and about $10 for the strap wrench). Much cheaper than a plumber!

I even used a torch to try to loosen it. No go. It had been untouched for 15 years. I had to cut it out and replace the whole shebang. Luckily for me, the original owners had not liked the faucet system the builder had started with, and had him change it before installing. The original Delta faucets were in the attic--and are physically the same. Replaced all the washers, seals, and springs, lubed the devil out of everything with silicon grease, and -- No LEAKS! I finally got the thing hot enough to melt most of the plastic--but the flow controls are STILL welded to the body.

Hope you can help me. I have a shower that won't turn off and replaced the cartridge and it still won't shut off. The part is a milwakee 46 8700.
