Thanks for this! Just to add some of my experience. I had a slow drip out of my shower head. I contacted Delta and after various emails back and forth they sent me some replacement O-rings for the cartridge. This did not fix the problem. My local hardware store had replacement Delta cartridges for $52. Being cheap, I found a non Delta version on Amazon for about $34. I went with the off brand. It worked however the tolerances are pretty tight on this cartridge and I noticed it was harder to get in and out. Also note, BE CAREFUL removing this cartridge unless you plan on replacing it. It can get really tight and although there a slots to pry it out with a screw driver, it can be ruined if you get too rough with the plastic. Although the aftermarket worked, I would spend the extra 18 buck or so and go with the official Delta replacement. Don't skimp on plumbing parts!

Hi. I replaced the cartridges three times because water was not coming down. I had to call the guy to figure that. It turned to be sediment blocking the shower head after all the shutting off and turning on the water. I would suggest to mention that in your video. BTW I find your videos very helpful. Thank you very much for taking the time to make them! Cheers

An add-on for new viewers: The shower cartridge includes two outlets at the back that includes a spring covered by a rubber cap (O-spring). It may be that the entire cartridge may not need to be replaced but only the O-Springs. Its much cheaper to do so, so you will need to inspect those to see if the rubbers are worn and chipped or if the springs have lost their tension. Remove and observe the orientation of the O-spring as the larger opening of the internal spring goes into the cartridge with the smaller opening covered by the rubber cap. Once you replace those you can just follow the rest of the video to put everything back in place and test to see if everything works. Always aim to have to have all parts ready in the event that its necessary and buy local so its easier and cheaper to do so especially if its a DIY project.

Agree. Mine was very easy except for the calcium. We have hard water. There are bathroom sprays that include CLR. Get some of that first. And PB Blaster to lube the threaded ring. He didn't say much about the ring, but if you take a channelock pliers and a soft towel. Grab the ring through the towel, and squeeze with moderate pressure (not gorilla). Rotate 30 degrees and repeat. All around the ring. It cracks the calcium. Then you can rotate the ring.

Just replaced my Delta Shower valve. I had a problem getting the retaining nut loose. I had hit it with WD-40 a few days earlier and also on the day I replaced it. I tried a strap wrench. No luck. Tried a large channel wrench. It still wouldn't budge. Decided to try something different. There was probably some hard water build up and I needed to break it free from the internal threads. I got a threaded hose clamp that fit the nut and made it as tight as possible. I gave it a tap on the adjusting nut with a hammer and it broke free right away and turned off easily! I also made my temp adjustments before replacing the valve so they matched the original key setting so I didn't have to keep removing the handle for each adjustment. Also noticed on the new Delta valves that they now a small slot on the top and bottom so it can be pried out with 2 screw drivers.

I drilled through that stubborn set screw because that scale build up makes these screws next to impossible to turn..even after WD40..and i am talking about years old townhouses...yepp drilled right through the screw with a titanium bit..sacrificed the handle ...Valve was fine as it just frees the handle off of the cartridge stem. Of course that is always my last resort in case nothing works...and yes on the last one wD40 didnt cut it.

If your brass collar is hard to loosen, spray some WD-40 on the threads & let sit for 10 minutes. If the cartridge is stuck in the valve body, use a small paintbrush & CLR (calcium, lime, rust remover product) to "paint" the inside of the valve body. My cartridge was so stuck in the body that it broke in half when I tried to pull it out.

Here's a question; Our tub had a drip-drip-drip about 1 drip/sec. I replaced the Delta cartridge, following the instructions included to the letter, and then watched your video to make absolutely sure I did it right including letting the system purge for a while to get rid of possible debris. Once assembled with a new cartridge, it still leaks about 1 drip/sec. So I'm wondering if it's not the cartridge but the housing itself. The interfaces with the gaskets look smooth & clean. What do you think? Anything I should check?
@ThePlumbingGurus Жыл бұрын
How is your water pressure?
@erfquake1 Жыл бұрын
@@ThePlumbingGurus Water pressure's good & normal. I actually think I fixed it as of a few hours ago. It turned out to be the housing after all. First I tried the next thicker size O-rings for the hot & cold feed posts but couldn't get the thing to fit back in, way too tight, so I switched back to the regular ones. That was a dead-end. In parallel with these attempts I was soaking everything in CLR because I noticed some scale/lime here & there. The threaded collar had some build-up in the threads so I hit that with a wire brush & re-soaked a while longer. After the threads were nice & shiny & reinstalling everything, I noticed that the collar tightened in a little further than it had before because of the cleared-out threads. THIS must have been the problem: it's not enough to just push the cartridge all the way in & tighten the collar, because if there's any remaining gap between the cartridge and collar, the returning water pressure will just push the cartridge out of place & compromise the O-ring seals. So having tightened the newly-cleaned collar down tight, there was nowhere for the cartridge to go and the seals stayed sealed. Success!

You made it look so easy. I did fine until I got to the part where I take the cartridge out. I can’t seem to get it out. And should water be coming out? I did turn off the water and left a faucet on to release the pressure. I’m obviously doing something wrong.

strangely I am stuck at the first step where I need to use Allen key to uninstall the handle. I probed the key in and there was nowhere I can get my key to turn and unscrew. Do you have any suggestion?
@ThePlumbingGurus Жыл бұрын
There has to be a set screw in there if it’s a delta. 2mm or 2.5mm , if not then the handle would just come off

I'm glad you made this video. I was very curious to know what the large O-ring sitting behind the big nut was for.
@CynthiaWord-iq7in3 жыл бұрын
yeah great a cracked o-ring will cause handle..to not be able turn turn off water, more than a drip. The Collar Nut can be loosened with a locking grip wrench.

Did you figure it out?

Very informative video. A plumber wanted to charge my elderly disabled mum $450 to basically replace the cartridge due to the shower head leaking. I'm going to do it myself and save her the money. THANKS!

Hi, my leaking problem came back again after last year. I already changed three cartriges. Also cleaned the mineral and calcium on the holes inside valve after Delta suggested it. Delta sent me new cartridges and springs. After did all those steps. Still few drops came out after more than 24 hours using the shower. Not totally stopped. I am wondering if I need to change the whole vallve body holds the cartridge. Called delta again. They said nothing to do with the valve. Still cartridge. Can it be valve issue or have nothing to do with vallve? My valve just installed 6 years ago. Any suggestion?
@ThePlumbingGurus Жыл бұрын
You could be right on the valve needing to replaced. Sometimes the valve body can get washed out and it will always have a small drip.

Thank you very much. I liked your videos and good advices to me and others. Really appreciated your professional feedback. You just confirmed my thoughts after following your video and did everything to solve this issue. Will plan to get a plumber to change the valve body. Have you had this kind of sitiation with your customers before? If I leave the valve not change it, will it cause more damage on tub or cartridge? Do you have video about changing shower facet valve? I can learn more.

Great video, does the set screw need to be fully removed or just loosened.
@ThePlumbingGurus2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the handle. Most likely you don’t need to take it all the way out.

I removed the Allen screw on my shower faucet it was a bit tricky, but now the handle won't come out, I hammered it softly around, heated it up with a heat gun, prayed it with a wrench and the darn thing won't come out, so I still have a leak there. Any ideas?

You can try soaking it it vinegar overnight. Even try putting vinegar in a spray bottle and spray and let soak.

Delta has a few different styles. Don’t know this exact one. Best thing to do is take it out and take a picture

Excellent video. However, the entire job is trivial without the calcium buildup. So some of your dinking around to clear the calcium buildup, which you did off camera, would have been VERY helpful had you included some video of that process. Also, ws40 is not nearly as good as pb blaster. And a spray CLR bathroom cleaner helps to free it up as well. We soaked the handle with allen set screw in CLR for a bit to clean it up. When our valve came out, it left a calcium ring where the two valve o-rings seat, so the new valve would not fit back in. It took cleaning out that calcium ring to get the new valve to seat. And a bit of diver's silicone lube. Also, adding some thread lube to the ring that holds the valve in will help the next time you want to replace the valve. Best is the copper stuff from the auto parts store.
