Pretty good install, if you didn’t weather seal the wood opening before installing the window. Trust me, water will get behind the brick and molding, and just get in contact with the wood framing. You need to waterproof at the wood framing first, then at the exterior cladding. But if the window doesn’t see too much water due to having a large overhang or something protecting it from water, you should be fine.

Hello and thanks for posting this helpful video. In my two story brick home, two of the windows are in dormers with new vinyl siding facing out onto the roof with a steep pitch. Can I do a replacement entirely from the inside? I'm not anxious to work on a project like this from on the roof because of safety concerns. Thanks.

I hope you are planning to insulate the window at some point. To help control water outside, it's best to install the bottom sill first and have the two verticals sit on top. Great vids look forward to more content .

He didn't mention it. Caulking alone is not weatherproofing a window. OSI Quad foam or similar needs to be applied in the gap between the 2x4s and the window to seal it.

Good tutorial just one thing. It looks like you only caulked the pvc trim and not the window itself. That only gives you one exterior layer of protection from the water if it runs on the face of the window. Doesn’t protect if water runs behind the brick trim and directly onto the window itself. What y’all will want to do is once the window is set inject your low expansion foam (there are foams specifically for this job) then caulk the window frame from the outside. Apply your trim and then caulk that too. This gives you two layers of caulk protection on the exterior. Once this is done you can repeat the same steps from the inside.

We have a 32inch Wide window we’d like to replace with longer windows of the same width (wanting to only make a vertical opening), so we have no room for new a wood frame, there is a preexisting metal lintel- do we need to remove brick from the sides to make room for a new wood frame, or can we still the new windows “insert” style?
@ThinkLiveLife
@ThinkLiveLife 4 жыл бұрын
I dont understand the idea of using trim as your water proofing layer. Brick is permeable and the water is behind the brick not in front of it. Also sealing the bottom of the window traps water that would normally drain from having a tilted sill. I kinda think this window will have significant water damage under it in 10 years and only prevent direct rain while doing nothing for vapor or the moisture that condenses. Might work in super dry climates like Arizona?
@nickdewalt4526
@nickdewalt4526 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Also caulking the lintel traps water and causes them to rust out.

No flashing or wrap? Is there an overhang above the window why you did that?
@MAGAMAN
@MAGAMAN 2 жыл бұрын
Seems like a window with exterior flashing would have been a better choice. You also didn't use any kind of tape or wrap to protect the wood. That wood is probably going to rot out again in another 10 years.

@MrPostFrame
@MrPostFrame 4 жыл бұрын
Niece Hartley I do not have a video for measuring. I always measure from the inside of the house. If your trim is off you can measure the rough opening but if it’s not you can measure from jamb to jamb. You just have to make sure you tell the store your ordering from whether it’s a rough opening measurement or from jamb to jamb. If you google how to measure for a replacement window there are lots of pictures that might help. Next time I replace a window I will make a video for measuring. Thanks for watching.

Nick Palermo you have to take a piece of wood and rip it so it’s butts up against window and sits flush with the drywall, that makes your jamb then your casing goes up against that piece. I believe that’s what your asking.

Okay so we bought a house that was built in 1981 and we definitely have to change the windows. My husband says we have to cut the brick to do so because it has a metal frame. I don't like the idea of cutting the brick because they dont make the same type of brick the house has now and we would have to put in rock to fill in the whole. Is there a way that we don't need to cut the brick around the windows?

Typically the shims are put where the screw holes are placed. This way the screw can’t warp the window frame if you happen to tighten them too much. If you’re doing retrofit jobs like this one you wanna make sure and order retrofit windows without a nail flange. These come with predrilled holes for fastening.

Why didn’t you put moisture tape just asking cause I have brick house and I need to replace 15 windows
@MrPostFrame
@MrPostFrame 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve got this question a lot. I should have talked about this in the video. My feeling (my opinion) is that applying window tape in this specific situation does not help because if water gets through sill and hits the tape it just runs the water down the wall between the sheathing and brick. This house was not wrapped with house wrap as it was built in the 70’s and has that black particle board sheathing. I have had two brick houses that I have replaced windows in this manor and have had no problems. There are multiple ways you can do this so you have to decide what works for you.
