I have gotten several people who struggle with changing all of the filter grids in their top manifold D.E. filter. Some have had D.E. leaking back in after replacing all eight grids. Here I show you the easy way to do this procedure.
If you have already taken all the grids out and the filter is apart:
Replacing all Eight Top Manifold D.E. Filter Grids THE HARD WAY: • Replacing all Eight To...
If you also need a new Top Manifold maybe just order a Complete Assembly.
D.E. Filter Complete Grid Assembly Installation: • D.E. Filter Complete G...
I am changing the grids here in an FNS Plus filter but it is the same for an American Products D.E. filter. It is essentially the same for the Hayward and Jandy filters except they have one rod down the middle which is actually easier. The newer filters will have a nice plastic guide to help you align the top manifold.
You see me tapping the top, as long as all the grids are aligned and in place under the top manifold that is the easy way to get the top onto the grids. You won't break any grids that way. They will snap and break if the top is not aligned properly and you go to screw the top down with the nut or bolt on the rod (s). So make sure they are aligned before you screw the top manifold down. I find tapping the top manifold to be effective.
After you got it all back together and you charge it up with D.E. and it leaks - it will be one of the following problems:
1) A grid snapped on top as you where putting it back together
2) The stem o-ring was bad and isn't sealing the stem pipe.
3) The stem pipe could also be cracked and leaking.
4) The backwash o-rings are worn - replace the backwash piston or you can
also install new o-rings onto the piston. If it is 6 yrs or older just replace the entire piston.
5) The top manifold is not snug and some of the grids are exposed allowing D.E. back into the pool.
These are the usual problems if D.E. is leaking after you replace all eight grids. It is pretty easy if you do it this way. If you take all the grids out and try to build it outside the filter -- it is more challenging. I can do it as I build these all the time but I always build them like this now.

Omg. I love you. After draining my pool, cleaning (scrubbing) off the algae, pressure washing my entire pool, taking apart the Hayward DE filter, breaking the manifold, cleaning the filters, and fixing the ball thing for the pop-ups. I was putting everything back together. All within 24 hours. But I couldn't get the top back on to the filter. After 2 hours and one stripped 9/16 nut I almost broke my toe kicking the filter. At 33 years old and 5 years being a home owner, this project was my nemesis. So I looked on KZbin and found your video. Fast forward to almost the end to watch you put the top back on. Then you said it!!! "Lube up the O ring" . I ran into my garage, grabbed some WD40, came out and sprayed it. BOOM! Went right into place! It never even crossed my mind to do that. Thank you for being so detailed! Mike.

Thanks for the video. I have been having ongoing problems with my Hayward filter, and your video gave me the courage to order a new set of grids off of eBay and install them. I put them in this morning without a hitch. The surprising thing is the degree of improvement. Really stunning how robust the water flow has become and just how quickly the pool is clearing. Your major tip--replace the grids one-at-a-time as you take the old ones out--is one of those things that seems obvious unless you didn't think of it--and then it's too late!

Your pump and filter are the brains of the operation if you have a bad spider gasket(which allows water to flow in all directions instead of the position you have placed your valve into) or old and/old gets then the water can't properly filter it's like using the same Brita filter for months or years without replacement or your air filter in the home. The air/water quality will decrease in purity

Just wondering why you wouldn’t make sure to tell your audience that your need to use DE Powder when your done cleaning the filter. DE Powder: When diatomaceous earth is introduced into the pool filter system, it coats the filter cloth. As water passes over the filter grids, the DE particles capture even the smallest suspended dirt particles. When cleaning is needed, the water flow is simply reversed.

Great videos helping diy pool owners take care of their systems. One recommend I would make to anyone messing around with the pentair filters is to wear a long sleeve shirt and gloves. The fiberglass shells wear down over time and are not fun to touch against your skin. Question - I just replaced the filters and manifold using a full replacement kit. My pressure hasn't really gone down since before replacing it. What are some steps I can take to troubleshoot? My gauge reads 30 when I run on full filter/skimmer, and about 15 when I run the vacuum and skimmer. Suggestions?

+Ryan Goodwin Cold be back pressure from the return lines. How is the water returned to the pool - how many return jet and do you have an attached spa? And the fiberglass can be a pain. Ironically a fiberglass pool company was re-glazing a pool and they gave me a good tip, wrap Costco or Sam's Club Saran wrap around the top of the tank to protect yourself from the shards.

When you do it, it looks too easy. Question, o had to clean a “Hayward” filter today. Removing the grids was easy, however when I had to place the grids back on the manifold, it was difficult. I had to do it “up side down. (Placing the top manifold at the bottom and bottom manifold on top.) I’ve spent almost and hour trying to figure it out. Could you make a video on the proper way of doing this type of filter. Again it was a Hayward filter grid. Thank you.

My pool guy said my tank like the one shown in video needed a 25 bag of DE. I backwashed, cleaned all the screens. I think maybe I added too much at the beginning? This video I filmed but haven't got around to editing it. Got about 70 videos on my HD right now so a little back logged fortunately. Pesky full-time job is getting in the way... Try to pull the complete unit out - cleaning it off if it isn't already will make it lighter and wait a day for it to dry out. Once you have the unit out - top manifold with grids intact - turn it over so that the small bottom manifold is now on top. Now slide the new rod in and tighten it from the bottom - which will be the top manifold. Does that make any sense?

I don't let any of the diatomaceous earth water come out. It will dry around the area and then you will breathe it .This is dangerous. Unless you can hose the area into a drain i would never let the water slosh out like that. GREAT POINT for people to know about.
@oliverstreet7704
@oliverstreet7704 4 жыл бұрын
If you want to keep DE from drying around there then wouldn’t you avoid splattering it all over the walls and begin by using the hose w/o the spray head to wash down the DE that settled on the top of the top manifold down into the tank? You’re being Mean disingenuous. You’re doing it for speed. It’s easier to get the top off a fiberglass tank with a dry sealing ring with the water in the tank. The plastic tanks flex a lot and the top is pre-loaded to be tight st the seal. The gasket and the tank last a bunch longer if you back off and tighten both tank nuts evenly. The predecessor, the stainless American Titan/Pentair Nautilus was stiff and only needed a one-nut tank band. They didn’t change to a 2 nut tank band because it looks cool. The WD40 (originally US Army Water Dispersant 1940) is a very temporary lube but spraying it on like that at close range also applied the spray propellant and that will soften and swell the rubber seal. That’s why it elongated so much it almost pushed a loop out to get pinched. If you want the lid to slip into place w/o pinching the seal and w/o leaving a lube and w/o swelling the rubber the lanolin o-ring lube used for large diameter won’t degrade the rubber and it’s no more hazardous than sheep. Dishwasher rinse aid will also do the job. Both wash off hands and tank easily and cleanly. If you want to leave a lube behind then one of the styrene modified greases like aqualube but it doesn’t rinse off hands. As long as I’m being picky, i’ll also point out that the grid clamping rods don’t always cooperate like that. Sometimes they spin and remove the nut on the bottom instead. A needle nose pliers won’t always keep the rod from spinning but it lets you know the assembly has to come out so you don’t have to fish for the serrated nut in the DE muck.

@@oliverstreet7704 NOt mean and disingenuous at all. DE is not to be inhaled period. I can not hose it away and many people cant There is not always a drain by the filter. Not sure all the stuff about tightening things. Your filter may be different from others. I just want people to know they should be careful with DE Thats all. Which filter (Pentair or Hayward) do you find is the most forgiving to the new DE user? I am a cartridge filter owner going to DE.

The best DE filter on the market is the Pentair 4000 series. It is more expensive but a sinch to clean. The manifold is actually on the bottom so you can easily clean it. The best for sure. I have a video on cleaning one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/joisnaeImtOqeZo You can see from the video how easy it is.

I've been in the swimming pool service industry for 12 years and I manage a pool service company in Dallas and I would recommend the System3 72sq.ft. Modular DE filter. It's basically a cartridge filter that you add DE to. It takes about 20 minutes to clean from start to finish and is SUPER easy to do yourself. It only has 1 cartridge in it.

That is basically the premise. The grids will last longer this way and they are easier to replace while in the tank.

I have a small pool with an OLD stainless steel 36sqfoot filter. I can't get a seal on the belt. I lubed the rubber ring, and did some adjusts to tighten, but no dice. I still get a couple thin slow streams. I did notice that it has couple mm cracks at the outer lip on the bottom bowl. two of them, almost oppiste each other. The lip where the Oring sits up against. It has an inner stainless ring as well which looks good, and the top looks good too. This design has no backflush. I'm wondering if I can correct this, or should I replace this? I don't want to replace it as I don't plan on spending over $300 for a new filter, and all the new ones are plastic, and have no idea how long they will last. A Pentair4000 series was $700 on Amazon!!! Ouch. My pump is pretty old too, and I have had it screech a couple times. Help

UnknownHandle UnknownHandle I don't recommend replacing pumps until they die. Just swap out the motor - less expensive. And keep the motor until the screeching becomes constant and annoyingly loud.

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 The Oring is faily new, and lubed. I'll check if its sitting correctly. But I used to barely get the clamp with nuts to come about 1/2" apart, and it would be a good balance to keep it from leaking. Now the 2 halve circle braces are almost touching when I tighten down the nuts.

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 My "pump" is so old it is just a motor...bolts on to a metal screen basket. 1.5HP, and right now, but it works. Only screamed at me 3 or 4 times :-) I think I need to plug off the suction at the bottom of the pool to get the scimmer suction high enough for my cleaner; Baracuda G3 meter to show any suction. As of now that spring doesn't move, let alone get to "3" as recommended for the vacuum cleaner!

This may be the easy way for an octopus, but there is no way you're going to align all eight of those filters (how much spare time to we really have folks), plus two stainless rods with that whole thing in the canister. I was able to get all of the plastic lined up just to find that the rods fell down to the bottom (but still too long to maneuver into place). Once I removed this rube goldberg from the canister, I was able to manipulate the rods, tightening one then the other. Appreciate your videos Dave, but this one needs some work.
@SPL
@SPL 9 жыл бұрын
+Gary Gross (garyATeightyoctane) I like that "Rube Goldberg," heard that referenced before with other pool equipment. Those rods have locking nuts on the bottom manifold to keep them in place. But sometimes they fail or are put in wrong after a filter tear down and cleaning. I did film an alternate way for just such an occasion. Replacing all Eight Top Manifold D.E. If the top manifold is looking old and has some small hairline cracks in it, it is better to purchase the entire assembly. But if only the grids are bad it is less expensive to just replace the 8 grids.

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Let me ask you. Is it possible for the D.E. to leak through and out into the pool? When I brush the floor or sides, I keep seeing a cloudy sediments.
@rotfan77
@rotfan77 6 жыл бұрын
SpyroTDragon it's definitely possible for DE to leak out into the pool, that's what was happening to mine, I thought it was sand in the bottom of my pool because it was kind of beige which is basically dirty DE powder but when I try to pick it up, it's a fine powder that you can't even feel, and not the granules you would normally find with sand. That generally confirms a finding of DE powder, so that's what I inspected my de grids and found at least four of the grids had tears in them allowing DE powder into the pipes returning to the pool and actually blowing out into the pool.

There is no easy way to do this friggin job, especially if there is not a guide ring! Might be better if the assholes came up with a better design but then they wouldn't be able charge people up the ass to come and do it for you when the average person messes it up and cant get it back together!

I am with you on that. The design of these filters are meant to cause you to break the grids since the tops are fragile and to cause brain aneurysms as you try to rebuild it... I like the Pentair 4000 series filters as you can easily remove the grids and clean it. These are horrible. Well said.

We just took ours apart and put it back together without any of the expletives you just used... and had no problem. There is however a newer version that holds just four cartridges up right that would be easy enough for anyone to dismantle, clean and reassemble.

I had a pentair that was much like this one but smaller. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard either. Then I moved and the new house has a Hayward. The grids are 100% more difficult than the Pentair. Even the drain on the Hayward is more difficult (and less efficient) than the Pentair. Can't wait to swap the entire system over to a Pentair.

I’ve been in the pool industry for 16 years. Sold my route in Las Vegas to move to Texas. I’ve never seen a DE filter in Las Vegas. These are a complete waste of time and money. The same profit (if not less), for cartridge filter install. $300 profit for cartridge in 10 min of work, less profit for an hour worth of work. Note to self: Stay away from DE. Less money more work!

Sounds like you will be selling your D.E. filter customers new cartridge filters. Here in CA is is about 60% DE and 40% cartridge. I prefer cartridge aslo.
