Good morning Ross. I did a background check on 88 of your summer time posting good stuff . Johnny's electric start 730s n new generation had 24 volts if you didn't polarizing they would burn up or for no apparent reason also they came out with circuit breaker kit Yep I have a Johnny changed over to 12 volt This was a good Christmas Eve special just need some snow

Thanks! If your weather is like mine, I don’t think there’s any chance of snow at all. It’s in the 60’s right now!

Working on my Super 77 diesel voltage regulator and trying to wire things up the way its shown in the wiring diagram in the operator manual. The book doesn't make sense and I wondered if they made an error. They show the lights wired to the B terminal and the L terminal going back to the amp meter and on to the batteries. Its shown the same way on the gas tractor as well. The way you did it made more sense and I think that's what I'll try.

It very well could be that a mistake was made, but a lot of times the light switch was used to excite the regulator and make it charge more

Thanks for this video. I got a 880 that won’t charge. Had the generator rebuilt about 5 years ago and it still don’t charge. The gen light stays on all the time and I just put the charger on it every 2-3 weeks.

A lot of the time it’s the regulator. It tells the generator what to do so even if the generator works, it won’t charge if the regulator is bad.

@onehappyfarmer3461. Did you get the generator to work? It is a very simple system. The generator has to be POLARISED CORRECTLY and does the generator have an internally earthed field or an externally earthed field? Very important. A lot of people don't know about the field earthing. There are also resistors in the Regulator. If these are burnt out then you need to look further. The Regulator must be compatible with the generator. CHEERS.

@@ianrobinson9565 No sir, still have to put battery charger on every few weeks. Never heard about the field stuff. Knew about it needing polarized but not sure I did it correctly. Thanks for the info.

@onehappyfarmer3461 Thanks for your reply. The problem could be the Regulator and, or the associated wiring. If you have a volt meter you will be able to do a few tests. Also maybe a new regulator might be required. Connect A VOLT METER between the D terminal and earth. Put a wire between D and F terminal. Disconnect the two wires going away from the generator. Start engine at IDLE AND BRING UP THE REVS SLOWLY. Watch the VOLT METER until it reaches 12V. Don't go over as the voltage rises DANGEROUSLY. This test checks the field circuit. Try this one and see how it works. CHEERS

Let me first start by saying I am learning everything the hard way with my tractor lol. I have a Massey Ferguson that had the battery go bad. I replaced the battery, but didn't pay attention to what was + or - as I have only really replaced batteries in cars where the Red is + and Black is -. I think I mixed it up and long story short I installed a new generator. My tractor starts up just fine now (yay), but after I turn it off the generator starts to smoke and I unhook the battery. Do you believe it could be that I messed up the voltage regulator when I first hooked up the battery incorrectly?

What makes the cutout points stick in the regulator? Asking for a friend that lives in Iowa.

“Dear Stuck in Iowa- As near as I can tell, the only way for preventing the condition you are describing from happening randomly at some point, is to live a good, pure, and decent lifestyle. If your regulator is sticking for more than 4 hrs you may need to seek out professional help, perhaps from some type of clergyman. However, I do have an alternative solution. Simply cut the rubber isolators on the mounting bracket and let the regulator swing freely and happily by the energized wires. The joyful pounding action into the side of the block all the live long day seems to prevent the points from sticking. Thanks for your concern, -Ross the advice Columnist”

Nice job, you're oil filters upside down, I'm sure it's filtering, put a magnet on your oil filter and compare the weight of the previous oil filter after using magnet, you know those upside down impact socket holders to stick a socket set to on the bottom side of a shelf? cut in a couple pieces, you'll find a substantial weight difference especially in a motor holding 40 qts of oil, my last oil change before the motor went and I sold it for what the scrap price was to the tow truck company cause it wasn't fixable

Generators work fine as long you aren't sitting at an idle all day and if you can source a voltage regulator that will last more than fifteen minutes.

Very possible. It’s just a Delco regulator and most companies used the Delco system.
