I finish replacing the broken zenith stromberg manifold on the 1977 MGB. While in there I take care of a leaking side cover as well as work on the choke assembly replacing a few missing parts that got tossed ( and shouldn't have) during the manual choke conversion previously done

I’m for keeping restorations as original as possible… but geez, when they purposely loose HP (and 15 is noticeable in a small light car) it makes me look for acceptable alternatives…. Like rolling back to the earlier design rather than putting on headers, etc.

After seeing what the 75 and later manifolds are like I no longer wonder why the power was so badly reduced when these cars were federalized. Now I'm wondering what Layland was thinking when they designed that mess, it's a wonder that the poor engine could even run.

I’m sure leyland just wanted to stay in the all important US market, and that met the emission standards. All the manufacturers were struggling at that the time to figure it out, and lack of power was across the board

It was common to remove the air pump and gulp valve and plug the related intake ports to the head to get a few HP back. I bought the car with this done. Is the engine better off without all that air pump stuff or should I work on putting it all back?

As long as in your area they don’t require it to be in place, I wouldn’t put it back unless originally is important enough to you that you want it all in place. Having it all in place can cause it to be slow dropping rpm’s during shifting ( making you have to slow your shifts down) and can sometimes cause it to backfire while shifting

@@mgbgtguy thank you… I’ll keep it off… even if it was all made non functional but back in place for show, it’s just an ugly mess of tubes and hoses
