You can install the emergency tiller and tie it off to keep the rudder from swinging aounrd..

Mike, thank you for sharing your idea. This is a great way to prevent the rudder and rudderpost from moving! A rudderpost secured from rotation is needed to safely carry out a chain and wire replacement on any boat.

Nobody mentioned that you have to cross wires in steering column.

It depends on the configuration of your boat. With a radial or quadrant where the cables attach on the far side of the post from the wheel, you need to wrap. On a quadrant where the cables attach between the wheel and post, no cross.

I really appreciate the offer I could have used your help last week. Local rigger gave me a hard time saying how easy it was I even bought a nice 3/16 fish tape that ended up being useless I believe the same wire kept hanging up in the radius of the guide tubes For anyone who has trouble try my trick: I took bailing wire and paracord Take the paracord and remove the core, slide the bailing wire inside about 5-6’ up the core The tape the paracord with electrical tape every foot and at beginning and end with 1-2 tight wraps Thank you so much you are welcome to visit my boat wherever I may be (Dana point at moment )
