I love the format of your video. I found the angles to be very helpful, the additional text the bottom of the screen was also invaluable, and you made the process seems simple. The diagnostic process indicated it was a door sensor and the tip of banging on the door lock area worked completely. I use several washcloths as padding and then banged the area with a hammer without too much force. The washcloth dampened the blows. After that, the washer worked perfectly. Thank you ever so much you've made my day!

so, you have to replace the door lock by 2 persons? I can not reach to remove and replace the lock from atop of the washer. Other youtube videos showed the door lock is removable through the gasket rubber ring beside it!

I disassembled the switch/lock assembly like in the video. There are retaining clips on the connectors on the bottom... I found you could "bend" the clip (wide direction) one way easier than the other. Bend it that direction a little and wiggle side-to-side (narrow direction) and they would pop off. Upon removal, I started on one end and released the small clips holding the front/back together. Upon opening it I found the plastic retaining box where the head of the solenoid plunger goes, half of that plastic (on the bottom) had broken off, allowing the plunger to exit it's little home. Tested the contacts and solenoid with a volt-ohm meter and everything was good except for that solenoid retaining holder. Temporary fix until the replacement arrives: I took a very small rubber band (like used for orthodontic braces) and pulled the solenoid plunger end "up" so it would stay retained in it's correct location. Re-assembed and the washer is working. Temporary fix only as the rubber band will eventually break or weaken... but if it lasts until the replacement comes I'll be all set!

I just bought this exact GE model used on my local Facebook, mine however does say that the door lock is on, but the washer will make a clicking noise and won’t start. Should I go through the trouble of having someone do this? It seems this model has a few angry customers.

Check if you can still open the door even though the lock is on. If so, I'd replace a lock and give it a go, easy to DIY. We have not had any issues with it outside the lock, still running strong.

This was so helpful, thanks for posting these detailed instructions. It was exactly my case (24 inch model -- even after removing the spring around the gasket, I could not reach through the gray rubber since it seemed sealed with glue). This was difficult but doable and it saved me a lot of extra expenses (and shame on GE for making such a terrible appliance, right?).

Some door seals easier to remove than others. Mine looks like has glu on it. You can try opening the defective lock apart and see if can clean it and reuse next time. I think one of the contacts build up corrosion inside.

Hello , We have this same model and it’s barely 5 yrs old , had an appliance repair bloke look and determined the door / lock / switch issue . I saw how easily he removed the wire and rubber gasket , then popped out the mechanism and unplugged it . We can get a new part for $156 . However can anyone let us know ( who’s replaced this part ) how much longer their washer functioned ? Ideally another 5 yrs or at least 3 I could live with . Other wise I’ll buy a new machine ( not GE or LG as repair man advised ) . Thank you all

There is a very small wire and spring, use case knife to remove then pull back just the rubber next to the lock. In appearance I have this very washer took less than a minute to remove, 45 seconds. Most like it will take longer to put wire and spring back on.

Ya. I'd have though the same. Removed that wire and spring but the rubber would not come out. I pulled hard enough that was scared it would brake apart. I've replaced a few rubbers prior, and this one one was stuck like if they used glue at assembly or something.

This is an absurd way to replace the door lock. It takes perhaps thirty seconds to remove the ring holding the rubber gasket in pace. Use a flathead screwdriver, find the ring, pull it off, pull the gasket aside, remove the door lock screws, this gives you two hand access for the repair and will allow you to firmly connect the new door lock.

@@sigor2011 I had the same problem, it seemed like it was glued. By removing the front door, I was able to see the spring hiding there, after I had pried, peeled and poked the rubber seal all around. Agreed. I'm a small woman living on her her own and there is no way I was going to move my dryer off of my washer alone. You can easily remove the ring with a screwdriver (I used two for more leverage) if you find the ends where they join together with a hook near the spring. If you try to pry it off away from the spring it will be nearly impossible. If you pry it off at the spring its pretty easy. And I do have exactly this machine.

Yes what a piece of crap i bought 2 of these washers for main floor and basement and both of the locks broke within first 17 months. Someone should do something about this because when you call GE they don't even wanna talk to you just send you to their repair team ... washer has 1 year warranty I understand but if this crap washer lock breaks down to 50 % of people then what does that say about their product.... maybe they should think about longer warranty on the lock! It obviously has a problem if both of my washers lock broke with 17 months of using it.

Thanks for taking the time to make/post the video. FWIW, I was able to replace the door lock switch on my machine last night via the "front method". (removed the spring & wire and pulled back the rubber gasket) It was a "bit tight" unplugging/plugging the wire harnesses but very doable. My washer/dryer are stacked in a cramped closet so the top method would have been a real PIA! I "do" have the 24" machine. It is my second one of these POS's, this one was installed March 2017. The first one lasted a whole 5 1/2 years before the drum bearings blew out. Cheers.

@@kristavick7896 Hey, I don't have references to them now, but the first vids/instructions I found showed the repair being done on full-size machines by removing the spring-clip around the rubber gasket to move it a bit out of the way. The spring is positioned around 6:00 o'clock behind the rubber gasket. I used a flat-blade screwdriver & needle nose pliers to undo the spring & pull the gasket aside. I "do have" & did the repair on our 24" machine without un-stacking or moving the w/d. I was then able to remove the lock by loosening the 2 screws at 3:00 o'clock and had just enough room to unplug/replug the wire harnesses to make the change. Just look for "GE Door Lock Repair " vids & I think you'll see what I mean? I have a "wine buzz" now but funny how I saw your post! Good luck...
